Stopped in today on my way from Las Vegas NM to Santa Fe Ed and Norm provided excellent customer service and even help with rigging my existing line, which was great being I was ready to purchase a new fly line , Ed tied on a loop for loop to loop leader connection! It is located south west of the Santa Fe square by over a mile in the Rail Yard District in Santa Fe. The fly shop is well stocked with high quality fly fishing items! Top rods and reels are on hand, as well a number of flies for the different creeks, rivers, and ponds that are fairly close. Brands on hand have included Sage, TFO, Yeti, Scott, Simms, the Drake, Scientific Anglers, Umpqua, Patagonia, Dr. Slick, Redington, Rio, MFC, Echo, Fish Pond and others, etc... . I love fly fishing and this is fly fishing store has one good tall tell sign, a lovable big ol fishing dog. Most great fly fishing store has a lovable dog, it's really due to the down to earth folks that usually work there at that fly fishing store! Another great and fun item to look for in a fly shop is when they post the latest updates on close by rivers and creeks! Points you want to look for is the water flow, hatches with the types, colors and sizes. Water temperature is a category that is often over looked, trout are very sensitive to the temperature of the water. Always try to find out when folks last update their boards. I also like to find out how murky the water is and stats on the tippets, leaders, lines and rods recommended for the different areas. Another area to ask about is about that the stocking of trout in that section of water. Getting local info is key, do remember to make it worth while for the inside information! The staff here are very knowledgeable about fly fishing, the different areas, what's working and what is not and how best to equip you on a number of different price levels with out over selling you. What a great fly selection on hand with great quality of the flies. They also have lots of fly tying materiel, so if you are heading back in to the back country and need to pick up that back up materiel, here is your spot for more material. Love this fly shop! Stopped by to purchase a few hundred dollars' worth of supplies for Tenkara fishing as they are listed on Tenkara USA and other Tenkara websites as a retailer. They do not carry any Tenkara tackle and the snootiness when asked if they had any reminds me of speaking with a Prius owner. Tenkara enthusiasts avoid this place at all costs. read more

Jarrett, the owner, sold me my first fly rod setup so I could join my husband on excursions. Everything I was looking to buy was able to be tested so I could get a feel for it, along with Jarrett's instruction and a quick lesson. He was extremely knowledgeable, offered guidance based on my preferences, needs, and skill. He broke down the various options and characteristics of each price level, but I felt in no way pressured to spring for the most expensive setup. He was down to earth, as was everyone else working in the shop. We came back later in the week, and without it being apparent we were looking to buy anything, one of the shop guides was eager to give us advice on where to fish, what set ups were working, and what to expect at various fishing locations. Had an outstanding day fishing the Pecos River with Norman Maktima. The canyon where the Pecos is located is beautiful and the river has the look of the classic trout stream. I had recently taken an on the river seminar about Euronymphing. While I heard and saw the info, I really didn't understand it. I was fortunate to be paired with Norman who I found out was a member of of the national team. Norman was excellent at explaining what I had not understood and providing additional detail in the technique. I now believe I can Euronymph fish on my own and catch fish. Norman is an excellent guide with outstanding teaching skills and a really nice guy! The shop is well equipped and the person I worked with at the shop was very helpful. I'm new at fly fishing and was visiting my family in Santa Fe. I booked a full day guide with High Desert Angler. Isaac(guide) called well in advance to speak with me and discuss the plan for the day. I arrived at the store and everything was ready to go. We went to private land in the Pecos and fished all day. Isaac was an incredible guide. He's a professional fisherman and a top notch guide. He took me through some great spots, provided a fresh lunch(not pre-made), tied on the perfect flies, got be out of the brush, untangled my line, had great tips, taught me hush hush techniques and was as excited as I was when we had a fish on. We caught about 20 fish throughout the day. When we got back I asked Isaac to stock me up on some flies for Los Angeles and he was happy to do so. This was a memory I'll never forget. Great fishing. I try and visit and purchase from every fly shop I run into on the road. This was unique in that they had "garage sale items". Wish more shops did this. The guy helped pick out some mysis shrimp materials and great advice on travel waders. He was knowledgable, friendly and not pushy. Sometimes if your not a local shops ignore you. Not this place. I am new to fly fishing. I saved for a long time with the intention of getting a great set of gear consisting of a rod, reel, boots, waders, vest etc.. I went in to this shop really excited and with a wad of cash in my pocket. No one wanted to help me, or answer any of my questions. One guy was on the phone apologizing to a guide trip customer for their guide not showing up and the other guy was playing on his phone. The place was empty, BTW. When I finally got the guy to put his phone down and asked him to show me his top rods, he rolled his eyes and acted like I was totally putting him out. That's was enough for me to walk out. He was patient, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and EXTREMELY helpful. I caught my very first fish, and then another one. This was one of the worst customer experiences I've had in Santa Fe, I only wish I didn't have to give them even one star. Right off the top I want to say...keep driving past this shop and head to The Reel Life at DeVargas mall instead. They treated us very well and I can't say enough about them, unlike the a-hole Ed at High Desert Angler. I walked into his shop and asked him if he had the list for the kid's fly fishing clinic at Valles Caldera and he looked at me like 'what the hell are you talking about'. No greeting, no can I help you, absolutely nothing. When I then told him that I couldn't bring the list of items up on my phone that I needed from the VC site because his Xfinity was blocking me, he picked up his IPad and started fingering it and completely ignored me. At this point, I told my friends and kids that we were leaving and going to the other store where we were treated like gold. It's really nice to know that they have so much business that can treat customers this way, especially locals who can bad mouth them. Anyone reading this, save yourself the bad experience and go have a great one up the street at The Reel Life. read more

I go to HDA every time i'm in Santa Fe, which isn't as often nowadays as I'd like. I've booked a couple of guided trips thru them with my (then) young daughters and we had great experiences, with one daughter becoming a pretty decent fly fisherwoman. And even when fishing on my own, they have always been helpful and informative. Ed is the man around the shop (I regularly check his stream update on-line to let me feel as though I'm there), and Jarret runs the show. I have always found them to be helpful, courteous and friendly. Ed even recognizes me on the phone when I call or when I come in, even after a year or two have passed. Read a couple of very negative reviews, and can only say that it is 180 degrees different from my experiences. There aren't a lot of independent fly shops around these days, and I really like giving business to these guys. read more
