ABSOLUTELY TOP-QUALITY MAINTENANCE Early this year (2004) I bought a low-priced Trek Verve bicycle at a different (top-rated) bike shop in Santa Fe. They warned me that the tires were not the best, but I had three flats in just the few months I owned the bike. (I rode on somewhat older and bumpy pavement, never off road.) They ascribed the problem to a bad season for goat heads and sold me new tubes, with goop, for both tires. After one of the repaired tubes had my fourth flat, I asked friends for recommendations, and they referred me to Rob & Charlie's. Their expert Ray was a rank above, with a new diagnosis: The particular tires on my bike, he said, would let the tubes slip slightly on the rims, straining the valve stem and making micro holes in the tube near the stem, if not maintained above 60 PSI. While he was telling me this, he switched the tube with his bare hands in 5 minutes, and I was on my way. I got the bike home, eager to take a ride the next day, and checked with my hand pump that both tires were filled to 70 PSI. Yet when I went to ride the bike the next day, the front tire (the one Ray had fixed) had gone flat and leaked when I tried to pump it. So I called Ray, told him what had happened, and he told me to bring in the front wheel and tire (NOT the whole bike). He examined the new tube he had installed and found it defective. After examining another new tube of the same low-cost brand, and finding micro-leaks also near its stem, Ray upgraded me to a better-quality tube. Again, it took him less than five minutes. At my request, he also extracted the valve-grabbing part of my old Bontrager hand pump, cleaned it and fixed it before my eyes, again in less than five minutes. He charged me nothing for this second visit, the second, better new tube (with goop) or the pump fix, but apologized for my trouble. Ray is simply the best, most expert and quickest bike repair person I've ever encountered. In the future, I will take all my bike repairs to Ray, although I have great hopes that my "Bicycle from Hell," now with suitably pumped-up tires, will mend its ways. read more

Walked in basically ready to buy or order an e-bike that day. As soon as I (a middle aged woman) explained to the young guy that I was looking for an e-bike that wasn't too heavy and could carry my kid, if such a thing existed, his eyes glazed over and he said, "Yeah, uh, I dunno. If you have something in mind we can order it. Let me know if you have any questions." and scampered away. He seemed too busy (or timid?) to talk me through some options, explain about the e-bikes they have, or problem solve at all. Bizarre. So I left. If I'm gonna invest in an e-bike I wanna work with someone who will spend more than 15 seconds with me. I've also taken my regular bike here before for servicing and while I don't expect sales people to be super polite or fake cheerful, the lack of warmth and disinterest was intense. I'm sure some people like this kind of atmosphere, but I'll be sticking to NM Bike and Sport in the future since I prefer a more friendly and helpful shop. read more

Wonderful place! The fellas running it are young but they're cyclists and from Santa Fe so they know the challenges we will face & what's best to purchase to be ready for it. Their prices are quite competitive but nothing bike is cheap so if you can't afford to maintain your ride then probably sell it - even cheap bike stuff is pricy read more

I don't like leaving meh reviews, but I had a weirdly negative experience at rob and charlie's. Long story short, they replaced a tube incorrectly (I brought the bike in for a full tuneup so probably spent about a hundred bucks) and then tried to blame me for it and charged me for replacing it. I've been riding bikes longer than the mechanic I spoke with has been alive, so I know when a busted tube is my fault and when it's the shop's mistake. All I can conclude is that the staff isn't trained to treat women like we might know what we're talking about, or that they don't mind losing a customer over a really cheap and fast repair. They had an easy chance to make it right and chose to gaslight me instead. Really disappointing, and I'm going to head on over to Broken Spoke next time instead. read more

Pretty negative experience here. Took bike in to get fixed. Seemed pretty simple, only needed new tires, got way overcharged and now the tires are flat and won't hold air in them. Not to mention the very unhelpful children they employ (seriously they all look 14). I wouldn't go here again. read more

Great staff! My bike rack got smashed hard in Taos and my back wheel got crushed (a hate crime against those with bikes on car racks?) The staff was super nice and knowledgeable. We had a wonderful experience with Rob and Charlies. The operator was so friendly and helpful. We ordered my bike online and had it shipped to the store. We made the trip up from Albuquerque. The bike was in great condition and fully assembled. They adjusted the seat and walked me through the gear shifters right then and there. In addition the owner shared the story of Bonnie Tu and how she started the Giant or Liv company. A very inspiring story filled with inspiration and hard work. Made me glad to have supported this great company. Bonnie does all kinds of work supporting women and encouraging get them to become active in Cycling and creating women's cycling teams. Rob and Charlies also told us to feel free to drive back for a 50 mile and annual check up for free. They were so helpful and efficient, I plan to take them up on it!! read more

I grew up with Rob and Charlie's being the go-to spot for my cyclist father seeing as it was blocks from my childhood home on W. San Francisco St. I got my first bike there and every bike we've ever had as a family was maintained by them. After many years of not thinking much about cycling, I got back into the sport as a much more serious hobbyist than before. One thing that proved difficult in getting back into it was dealing with the fact that being a bit of an amateur means "real" cyclists can be a bit rude and snobby when talking to you. This is particularly noticeable because I chose to go with a fixed-gear bike for my street ride. My reasoning is that I want a bike that will make me work. After some bad luck trying to get advice on the best bike to go with, I chose to go back to the tried-and-true shop of my childhood. Sure enough, it's the same old Rob and Charlie's it has always been. Everyone seems to enjoy working there and they're all really helpful. I had a lot of questions and not only were they very patient and forthcoming, but they didn't make me feel like they were judging me for wanting to go the route I did for my first "real" road bike. It was really cool being helped through the process of choosing and ordering my bike like that and I can't thank them enough. Everyone should take a cue from these folks when it comes to running a nice little shop where the gearheads and newbies can both have a positive experience. read more

I came down to the store the other day to get my brakes fixed before a weekend at angle fire. I came in on a Tuesday and JJ helped me he took the bike to Lucas. he's a young guy, id says 16 or 17. I didn't know how I felt about him working on my bike seeing how young he was. but I was very wrong he got my brakes felling the best they have ever felt. I came to get my bike and I talked to Lucas a bit and wow that kid sure knows what he's doing. he gave me some tips on some simple maintenance and suggested some trail to ride. overall would recommend this bike shop! read more

I had a bad experience with a minor bike repair at this place. Their prices were higher than other shops, and the quality of the repair was very poor. I wound up having to cut a ride short and take it to another bike shop to have it repaired properly. Service was amazingly surly and rude. I would never go back to this place. My experience with Mountain Sports, the second place I took the bike, was like night and day. Mechanic was friendly and knowledgeable. He diagnosed a couple problems that the other shop had missed completely. Repair took less time and cost less too. Take a pass on Rob and Charlie's! read more

I went in with a beat-up cheap bike from a garage sale and asked for a tune up. Leo advised me that it might not be worth the cost to repair it, but with consultation we decided on a plan to address the imperative issues. 3 hours and $70 later I had a smooth running bike and some advise on future maintenance. Stay away from this place. Bought a brand new bike for my son. Within less than two months, the rim of one rim needed to be replaced. Got grossly overcharged for that -- $150. Then they didn't even bother to replace the punctured tire associated with it. Had we not caught it, they would have sent us out the door $150 poorer and with a bike that wasn't fixed. Highly recommend you take your business some place else, where they actually care about their customers. read more

I called the shop Monday morning, and spoke with Eric about tuning up the slightly rusty mountain bike I nabbed off of Craigslist. By the time I brought it in, the shop was closing because of the whole false flag pandemic craziness, and the governor's orders to shut the state down, and they weren't taking any more bikes or customers. Luckily, Eric pleaded with the owner on my behalf, and after gallantly retrieving the bike from my car, went about whipping it into shape. He got the chain back on, oiled it up, showed me how to fix the light, and gifted me a Phillip's head screwdriver with which to do it, and gave me a patient tutorial on how to take off the front wheel, and re-attach it, for easy single girl bike transport. No words for how grateful I am for Eric's kindness, and the care and meticulousness with which he tuned up my bike. So happy this chill, friendly neighborhood bike shop exists. This is one of the absolute best places for bikes and customer service in Santa Fe. The owners and staff are knowledgeable and patient and willing to work with even the most novice of bike riders. They are willing to take as much time as needed to find the right bike for you and make sure you are satisfied. I highly recommend this place for anyone looking to buy a bike outside of commercial locations like Wal-Mart. The bikes are pricier than other locations, like K-mart and such, but you get what you pay for, as the old adage says. In truth, with Rob and Charlie's, the service, care, and attention, you receive a great deal MORE than you pay for. :) read more

Customer service isn't about immediately and rudely blaming the customer and making him feel incompetent when there was an oversight on the shop's part from a previous service job. Avoid this Place at ALL costs...I was told my Front Brakes would be Replaced for $20...(plus Tax), I bought it in on a Thursday and was told it would be ready on Monday, They would call when it was Done...No one called, and I called and left a Message on Monday, Tuesday still no Response, So I called again and the Bike was Ready, I was told the Price was $22.00 , Fine, The I was told with Tax it would be $ 27.10 !...I explained that the Tax on $22.00 should only be around $2.00, So the manager who had a Horrible Attitude told the cashier to Refund me $3.00, After I got Home I noticed a Front Brake Part was MISSING !...I Immediately returned to Rob and Charlies and Pointed this out to them,,,They Reluctantly replaced the the Part...(Talk about a Bad Attitude), With a Miss-Matched part, I asked them to PLEASE Replace it with the Correct Part, In which the manager came over and asked me to leave...I told Him all I wanted was them to replace the correct brake part, In which The manager became VERY Hostile and Rude , as well as acting in a Unprofessional Manner... They're very honest and helpful with any questions or concerns you have about bikes. Their inventory is mostly Raleigh bikes. They have at least 1 to 2 mechanics always on duty. They have a fast turn around on repairs. I brought my Raleigh e-tricycle in for a tune up and a flat tire repair the evening before and got it early the next afternoon. This is a nice little business that has been around for a long time. The employees are not right out of finishing school, but ... neither am I. They sold me a bike at a fair price and fixed it when my daughter tipped it over.
