This is such a lovely shop next to Cafe Pasqual. If you are are going there to eat (which you should!) make sure you pop in here after. I wanted to buy everything! The baseball caps were cute, there are things for the home, greeting cards, artwork, and clothes. I bought several gift items and most enjoyed talking to Kelly who is a beautiful human being! Note to self: Don't wear faux fur inside this store. I'm naive to think that walking in to this store my dollars and patronage would be welcome. Although Santa Fe Hemp has some great books and beautiful jewelry, the gentleman who rang me up was rude. Like, how dare I walk in and actually buy a couple things? I normally wouldn't write a review like this, but it was very apparent that my purchase was not welcome there. I even thought to come back and purchase some cute silver día de los muertos earrings. A bit disingenuous to just characterize this place as a women's clothing only boutique, albeit they do carry a lot of women's clothing. Besides accessories such as bags (many if not most of the more utility and unisex variety) and tchotchkes, they do also have some great message buttons, fridge magnets, bumper stickers, and post cards. One post card I got has to do with famous figures in history who didn't "set the record so straight" and has on it a reminder about National Coming Out Day (Oct 11). Another item I bought is a button with the message reading, "Damn Straight I'm Gay!" What was explained to me by one of the proprietors/owners while I was in the shop is echoed on their website: "When buying our hemp and organic cotton products from overseas, we consciously choose companies that have the utmost respect for humankind and participate in Fair Trade, not just free trade. We do not support businesses that cannot guarantee that their products are not made in sweatshops." The owners also try to buy as locally as possible, and both of these moves I really like, not to mention their attention to social issues. Pros - Good clothing and backpacks (organic cotton and hemp) - The owner is nice Cons - The place reeks of incense or candles and all of the clothing is permeated with that smell. We have to wash anything we buy there 4-5 times to get it out. - I spoke to a fellow who works there about this issue and he told me "well, some people are just really sensitive" and that "you should shop online then". I hope the owner wouldn't encourage other customers to bypass their local store and buy directly from the manufacturers online. We like supporting local businesses and we were disappointed by his response. (Note: We have purchased over a $1,000 in clothing in the last year from this store and recommend it to other people who need organic clothing) - When I mentioned that incense, scented candles and essential oils often emit toxic chemicals he was very defensive. Later it came out that he deals in essential oil products. If it was just a scent it wouldn't be a big deal, but we get headaches from the clothing we purchase here unless we wash them repeatedly and there is solid scientific evidence that VOCs are emitted by essential oil products. http://news.discovery.com/human/scented-product-toxic-chemicals.htm - If this was Wal-mart or a conventional store I might expect this kind of response, which is basically "it's your fault and we don't care". But at a store such as this where a progressive and thoughtful worldview seems so clear, it seems puzzling. We can just shop online and in fact that's what I did later that day. But I'm hoping that the owner feels differently than the fellow who was working there and will reply here. I can understand if they choose to continue to sell those scented products (though I'd be disappointed) which get into everything else, but I can't understand the attitude that came with it from that worker. read more

I absolutely love this store. I wish we had something similar close to me. They sell clothing for women, children and men but I fell in love with their accessories. I bought jewelry, hair bands, beanies and some funny cards. The lady working at the store was as sweet as can be and felt the positive energy in this store. read more

Fun to peruse...even for a local. Not necessarily my style of clothing, but the trinkets and bumper stickers are cute to look at.

Great selection of organic/ hemp clothing, great bumper stickers, but the woman working in the store was bizarrely rude to me, and acted like I did something horrible to her. My husband and I were on vacation in SF and so excited to have found the store (we try to support sustainably made clothing) and said so to the clerk, and she practically rolled her eyes at us, she answered a few questions I had with obvious irritation, and generally treated me with contempt. However, when a local SF resident strolled in while my husband and I were choosing clothing to try on, the clerk was extremely friendly and seemed like a different person. I spent about $150 in the shop and the clerk seemed to warm slightly when she discovered I was actually purchasing something. The whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth-- I just couldn't understand what I had done to offend her so horribly. Weird. read more
