Yesterday, Saturday 9/20, I bought the most elegant and beautiful hand-carved angel by Pete Ortega. My visit to the shop was such a pleasant experience. Not only did I enjoy chatting with other customers, but Debi was wonderful - friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I highly recommend El Nicho, whether you are visiting New Mexico or if you live here.

Over 30 years ago we purchased a Joe Ortega carving when we visited Santa Fe. We still love it!

Handcrafted earrings. Very comfortable. Not heavy. Craftsman carved the birds!

This place was amazing the Owner or at least I believe she was Is Great gave so much information on the different jewelry and history of New Mexico.

El Nicho is located at the far left of this "village".

Old town Santa Fe could come off much more touristy but for the most part, the area is fairly subdued. Out of all the little art shops we visited, this one was my favorite. The first thing that strikes you is how rustic it is. Located in a building over a hundred years old (young by old town standards), El Nicho's storefront apparently used to be part of a horse stable. What makes this store great? Local artisan wood carvings and plenty of them. Each piece is unique due to the natural source of the carving. I picked out these pretty sweet little carved birds on a "log" (see my attached photo). The lady who assisted us (whom I can only assume is one of the owners) supplied us with plenty of anecdotes of our bird's artist as well as other pieces around the store. Talk about endearing... When you buy something that you wish to cherish as a memory of a travel experience, it doesn't get much better than that.

Great Family owned business! We got a piece of art from a local artist who specializes in crosses. She carries art from many local artists.

Vendors are mostly kind. Their self made products, mostly with turquoise are wonderful. The opaque, blue-to-green turquoise is a mineral. Persian stones from Nishapur (of Iran) is used as a guiding reference for evaluating turquoise quality. Navajo and Hopi tribes are known to produce high quality turquoise jewelry. The top two of the following 4 kinds of turquoise are widely used in Santa Fe area: Sleeping Beauty Turquoise  Kingman Turquoise  Bisbee   Royston  They (including the stores as well) prize Sleeping Beauty for its consistent sky-blue color. However, it's no longer being mined (?), while Kingsman has brilliant blue color, but it isn't as precious as SL due to the fact that they're still abundantly being mined. One native vendor explained how the program work: They've a committee, to determine the eligibility (sometimes vendor has to go before the committee to demonstrate their skills - like making a piece). The covered corridor has 63 spaces, each marks with a white number. If the vendors are more than the spaces, they'll have to do a lottery, which means a particular vendor may not come tomorrow. In General, a particular vendor doesn't come everyday.  On the last day there, I purchased a bracelet from a generous man, who explains the logos are his name and his daughter's. When I pay, he tells me a less amount voluntarily. I was a little hesitate. Although I like bargains and discounts, but I don't ask for it with small vendor, especially with the artist him or herself.  "Are you sure?" I asked. Actually I was not 100% sure what he had quoted me earlier.  "Yes, it looks so nice on your wrist." I paid what he asked. Thank you.

I'd recommend to add some salsa or the cream since the pupusa is pretty dry. It helps so there isn't as much crowding while you're trying to go through. I have been to farmers markets in multiple states, but I have never seen one with a gift shop! That was very interesting to see. The market itself had a nice array of fresh produce, food, and artists' work. It was cool getting to see them roasting fresh chile and the band that played was soo much fun! The best booth for us was Dancing Turtle Studio. Absolutely stunning pieces of art and my guy bought me one of the hot air balloon pieces to commemorate our 1st anniversary. It honestly couldn't have been more perfect! The artist herself was incredibly sweet and wonderful to talk with. It was amazing getting to hear about her process as well!
