My wife and I were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary in Key West and wanted something off the tourist trail of places to eat and drink. So maybe I'm exposing one of Key West's hidden secrets. We both had various drinks and all were excellent. Then we each had smash burgers. Me with fries and my wife with tots. Excellent flavors and came out super quick. So if you're looking for a good bar with solid drinks and food do me yourself a favor and check out Surly Siren.

I missed a chance to reserve at the ship's steakhouse and I was definitely craving burgers. The fact that I could enjoy it with a Mojito? Even better! Surly Siren is a cool little dive bar located on the second floor with views of Duval Street and Mallory Square. My friend and I walked in literally what I had just opened on Friday and sat by the bar. Our bartender was funny & helpful starting me with their Metallica martini, mixed with Cruzan Rum. As far as food, my fries had a nice crisp to them. The burger, served with caramelized onions and even ordering it medium (I usually order medium well , oops) was juicy and tasty especially supplemented with the bacon and the fried egg #proteinloading. My friend also approved of the chicken wings she ordered.

As a person that has a hard time deciding between items on a great menu, this was dream! Our service was outstanding. We loved the ambiance of this spot. Lots of cool artifacts and art! We sat at the bar and started with the grilled marinated key west pink shrimp appetizer with a spicy lime chutney. The shrimp was cooked nice and plump and the chutney (served on the side in a little funky bowl) spread on top gave it a bit a of kick. The spinach salad was a nice contrast of "greens" to have as an appetizer. For mains, the Key Lime Pasta with (I think) local spiny lobster was great and the Filet Co. Chili Cheese Coney with small beef dogs on a little buns was also good. For dessert, we enjoyed the hot banana honey. The bistro is decorated with Star Wars paraphernalia on the shelves over the bar and you have to check out the bathroom, which was pretty awesome with Star Wars scene complete with flashing lights. The atmosphere is dimly lit and kinda cool and a bit like a speak easy. I'd give The Flaming Buoy a very strong 4 and highly recommend it as one of the Key's coolest better food oriented restaurants. Good service even after it got busy.

We ended up going upstairs to Café at Louie's, and honestly, it turned out to be such a great experience! The food was absolutely amazing, the cocktails were delicious, and the atmosphere was beautiful and unique. Everything was high quality and full of flavor. And the octopus was probably the best I've ever had! Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in Key West and a place I would love to come back to!

We booked a sunset dinner for our 6th wedding anniversary on the patio which was also the final night of our key west trip. We did let them know when we called to ale the reservation so they were aware it was a special evening for us (you can't make reservations online-you do have to call) so we were hoping we would get a good table with a view of the water and sunset. Unfortunately that was not the case. That's fine. You can't always accommodate that and we understand. We said nothing. We were placed at a very intimate table sort of in a corner by a wall. There was another table, of a very similar set up in the adjoining corner. The set up wasn't great as our chairs were close enough to touch if both pulled out at the same time. But we didn't say anything and just accepted it as it was the off season and it was possible no one would be seated there. Our server could not have been friendlier, more kind or knowledgeable about the menus and specials. I have a stomach condition so dining out is not without it potential headaches so for me that was really special. She warned me off of my initial choice after hearing my special needs and suggested something that Snead similar but maybe more appropriate for my needs without making me feel uncomfortable. Truly well handled. Our food was good. The key like pie was good. We like it very cold and very limy so not our favorite but no where near the worst we had. They left off an iffy sauce for me and my husband who had a fish dish raved about his. There was nothing showy about the congratulation dessert just very dignified. Unfortunately about half way through the evening another couple was seated at that adjoining corner table. They had clearly been drinking before being seated as they were loud from the get go and one walked in with a drinks in hand. They continued to be loud all evening. They were a bit belligerent. They were clearly not having a good time as they were bickering (not in a cute way playful way-in a way that made us feel like they should be having this conversation in a private setting) quite a bit of profanity. They clearly were listing to our table because as we stood to leave they congratulated us and said "happy anniversary" which was sweet but also...you still behaved that way while know this? Come on. It just marred the evening. However, I am fully aware that this is a very specific experience that likely would not happen to anyone else and is in no way the restaurants fault.

The quest for the best key lime pie in Key West began over dinner on Monday night, when I mentioned wanting to check out Kermit's on my friend recommendation, lamenting that I never got to enjoy a truly good key lime pie during my first and last visit in 2020. The one I had then was... not good. (I now know the dead giveaway is that it was green). What followed has become a pursuit of principle: truly a noble quest I can get behind. Fast-forward 3 days, and here's our verdict so far, with one contender still to come. Tomorrow night we're headed to Red Shoe Island Bistro for dinner at the insistence of a local who claims it blows Kermit's cheesecake out of the water: 1. Kermit's - The benchmark. Bright, tart, light, and perfectly balanced. 2. Hurricane Hole - Good, but missing the extra punch of tartness that puts Kermit's over the top. 3. El Siboney - Solid, but denser and more cheesecake-like, but also lacking the light, airy tartness of Kermit's. 4. Key Lime Pie Bakery - Forgettable in a town where memorable matters. 5. Matt's Stock Island Kitchen - Overly sweet with virtually no lime (or even lemon) presence. Our slice came boxed with whipped cream and... cherry sauce?! If you'd called it birthday cake, I'd have found that a more accurate description. Might as well call it Diabetes On a Plate. Tomorrow morning, a plan was proposed (that I seconded): we'll stop by Kermit's to grab two slices to go and stash them in the fridge, specifically to revisit after dinner at Red Shoe Bistro as a point of reference. If Red Shoe's pie ends up being too close to call, we'll have no choice but to bring a slice home and do a true, side-by-side comparison in real time. And in the interest of not ending the trip on a sour note if tomorrow night disappoints, at least we'll be leaving Key West on Friday morning with Kermit's key lime pie as our final bite.
