Steak ala Mexicana
Garry H.

What does eating in a small town mean? Family owned restaurants and good food! Hidalgo's has been around for a long time. It's always busy. Glenda and I had been to a craft show at the fairgrounds, and it was time for lunch. I tried to take her to the famous Owl Pharmacy for one of their great hamburgers, but the grill was already shut down. Now where? Hidalgo's was very busy from the craft show, but we grabbed a table. Chips and hot sauce were the normal good. Glenda ordered chicken fajitas and I got steak ala mexicana. It took a while because they were so busy. Both came out sizzling! Dig in! Glenda loved the fajitas. My order was wonderful. When you cut the steak into bits, and grill it with the onions, tomatoes, bell pepper, and jalapeños, magic begins to happen. All the flavors absorb into each other. This is probably my favorite dish at any Mexican restaurant. Come try Hidalgos!

This place radiates the comfort of a grandma's kitchen. Very casual. Friendly service. Good prices for hot food. We always stop here for a quick to go breakfast each time we head on a road trip to Austin. I'm not saying this is incredible food, but as my dad would say "it's not too shabby." I personally would rate the food individually a 3.5, but for the establishment it's a 4 in my eyes.

Stopped in on the way to Brady for the goat bbq cook off. Place was packed, dove season opened up this week. Service was good a little slow but expected for the amount of people in the restaurant. We had the queso, needs more flavor, taquito dinner, meat was a little bland and the tamale dinner, probably the best of the three. Tamales were cooked good and had good flavor, not to much masa. Hot salsa was good.

Wow what a gem in the rough! I had brisket tocos, my wife had fajitas for one. Food quality and amount was great. We both took home leftovers. Their menu was huge 55 choices of Mexican and American dishes and breakfast served all day.

Good food. Reasonably priced. Service sucked. It's a small town restaurant, so the locals will stare at you like you are an alien. Salsa has great flavor. The tacos were yummy but a bit greasy. Restaurant was clean. We would eat there again while passing through if we had a different waitress (the one we got was busy gossiping the entire time)

After driving hungry for four hours for what was supposed to be a real treat at Underwood's Cafeteria in Brownwood, we were hit with disappointment when we discovered they are closed on Wednesdays. How a mainstream food establishment could be closed on Wednesdays is a topic for a different Yelp review, but none the less, we found ourselves back on the road, still hungry and definitely questioning what are next option would be. As we drove on, I diligently searched Yelp with each passing town trying to figure out what to do for lunch. It seemed that the choices pretty much consisted of Dairy Queen, then there was a Dairy Queen and oh yeah, last but not least, Dairy Queen. Is the Mob in control of the Dairy Queens in small town Texas? Just as I was about to give up and have, you guessed it, Dairy Queen, I found a review for Hidalgo's. I cannot say enough good things about Hidalgo's. It is by no means anything fancy, but I wouldn't expect anything else in a place such as Coleman. The food was simple and delicious and the service was as good as any I've had anywhere. I've had a lot of chips and salsa in my day and I would say this place quite possibly has the best salsa I've ever had. My guess is that this salsa is made from scratch each day using an old family recipe. I will feel better believing that one anyway. As for my meal, as I often do, I reverted to my typical standby of nachos. Yes, nachos at their essence are very simple and very hard to screw up. That said there is a definite distinction between nachos that are just okay and ones that really make your mouth water. The nachos at Hidalgo's are definitely in the upper echelon. In addition to the nachos I tried a bite of a taco and an enchilada off of the combo plate and both were quite good as well. I am not sure when I will ever have a chance to visit Hidalgo's again, but would definitely make it a priority lunch or dinner stop if I were in the area.

Egg covered chili relleno is unique, with meat and cheese filling excellent. Horchato is worth a try.

What a great stop while traveling! Great salsa. You will not be disappointed with their omelets! But anything you order will be great.

Great food at very reasonable prices, especially the lunch specials. I'd recommend the Guiso.

The people at this restaurant are so friendly and make sure you are happy. They know what customer…read moreservice is supposed to be! The second we opened the door Jeremiah welcomed us then proceeded to take our order after answering some questions. He is such a nice young man! He asked where we were from and said he goes to Arizona often. He just smiled like we were family. Thanks again Jeremiah! We went to find a seat and the owner and his wife also asked us where we're from and we start chatting with them. We told that that my wife actually found them online. We were passing through and needed a restaurant to eat at. We get our food and were in awe over the wonderful taste of their food. The owner comes out with two plates of food he prepared for us to taste. OMG the taco and torta were so delicious!! He told us the family just opened a few months ago and it started getting busy while we were there so I'm taking that as a good sign they will be there for a while!! The restaurant is very clean and all the staff are very friendly and checked on us numerous times to make sure everything was ok and ask if we needed anything. Would we go back?? Heck yes we would!! I wish we lived closer so we could!! Good luck to them!!
