I've had many meals catered by Hickory Pit. The food has always been amazing and the service has always been impeccable.

This place food is God Awful. Service is good but the food is terrible. The MSc and cheese is all MSc and no cheese. How do you do that?? The brisket is mystery meat, no seasonings at all and drier than a desert. Come on guys this is Mississippi and you're doing this. Everything is just terrible. Great service, very nice people behind the counter; however, everything else was increasingly worse. The 1/2 chicken was fairly priced & passable. Nothing to write home about but overall okay, cooked well without a ton of flavor. The brisket was another story, and the only reason I'm writing this review. This was the worst brisket I have ever had in my life. 0 flavor, tough/dry. I spent minutes chewing every flavorless bite of this slop. My family and I have been eating there for very long time. It was my father's favorite place to eat bbq! I stopped in there two weeks ago and went through the drive-in window. I get home it's cold, fries were cold. I had 1 teaspoon of baked beans. I paid $16 for this. I've been asking for two weeks to refund my money because I don't live in that area anymore i have yet to get anyone to get my refund for always say they don't have a manager and Alex is the owner and he's gonna call me and he's gonna refund my money.it is going on three weeks now! zero That's sad that this place which has been a staple is gone down like that.. i will be filing a complaint with BBB just for the sure principle of not refunding my money are even a owner/manager getting in touch with me! read more

The Mac and cheese was scraped from around the pot, I got a pile of lettuce with 4 chopped tomatoes for the salad and a half of slab of ribs that only 3 were edible because 2 on the end were burned. The food was good, the service was incredible! Super friendly people in a cool, country diner atmosphere.

$21 for a burger and two sides. The burgers while it was a fresh patty had no flavor. The macaroni and cheese was too salty and the baked beans tasted like straight out the can with a tomato base versus barbecue. To top it off the man taking my order recommended the beans. We love this restaurant! Absolutely delicious barbecue! We usually get takeout since it's very close to our house, and never have to wait more than a few minutes, even if we walk in and order to go. We have never had a problem or bad experience and the restaurant is so cute with all the piggy figurines! read more

The pork sandwich was a reasonable portion for the price, and I tried a bit of the bbq sauce before I committed to it. It had a lot of great smoky flavor with a hint of heat. I appreciated that the young man working the counter mentioned that the sandwich comes with slaw on top, which I asked to have on the side. I'm not typically a fan of slaw, but it did have very fresh veggies and a nice vinegar based dressing, not a creamy one like I usually end up with at bbq places in Northern states. My husband's cheese burger was a good size and served fresh. The lemon pie, was very good, I could tell it was made locally or in house. The atmosphere is very much a hole in the wall, country store vibe, but I often find those to have the best food. I'm not a local, I was just passing through town on a business trip, but I try to find something interesting that isn't fast food since I do travel so much. This is now just average BBQ at ridiculously high prices in a ho hum and very dated atmosphere. Hear me out - the former owner worked tirelessly to make HP a metro area institution. Good food at a good price. The new owners have not been able to replicate Ginger's secret sauce. A sandwich plate, drink and dessert plus tip will now set you back almost thirty dollars. HP is good, but it is not thirty dollars worth of good. Sad to see. read more

I was sent to Hickory Pit for the Ham and Cheese sammich while I was looking for the best non-burger sammiches in Jackson. This is not anything I would normally order at a BBQ place. I like the pulled pork, but my lead came from a good friend so I bit the bullet and grabbed the Ham and Cheese...described as the "Hickory Pit's Signature Sandwich" The bread is HP's awesome buttered thick white bread that comes with BBQ plates and a monster flat-top grilled piece of ham and with American cheese dripping out. Yep. It's good. Damn good. Makes me look at Hickory Pit in a different light. I am not a huge fan of MS BBQ so this gives me a reason to go in there again. I recommend it. Highly. read more

I convinced my coworkers to try this place based on the reviews on here. I was very excited to have some good southern BBQ! I was not super hungry so I got a pulled chicken sandwich and a slice of the Hershey's Pie. With a name like Hickory Pit, I was expecting a lot of smoked hickory flavor. My chicken had no smoked flavor what so ever. It tasted just like cooked chicken. The slaw was good on the sandwich and I mixed the hot and normal sauce to get something I liked. The Texas Toast was nicely done. My coworkers said the baked beans and slaw were good. I really enjoyed the Hershey's Pie. It was delicious! One of my coworkers got the Pecan Pie and let me try a bite. It was underwhelming. Way too many pecans and hardly any sauce. If this is the best BBQ in Mississippi as the sign inside the door states, then I am very disappointed in Mississippi BBQ. read more

Going through the drive through, the lady was very pleasant. She provided us a menu and waited while we ordered. We ordered the pulled pork sandwich platter with fries and baked beans. The fries were okay. They lacked a bit of salt. The pulled pork was okay. It came with no sauce on it which was fine but the pork had no flavor by itself. The baked beans were extremely tomato based and had no smoke to them. They were very Red In color. I ended up pouring some of the bbq sauce from the pulled pork into the beans. I've been eating at Hickory Pit for more than 20 years, eating there every couple of weeks. I have always enjoyed their food and unique taste. Not a franchised BBQ joint. Today I purchased two pulled chicken salads. The salads were not fresh tasting and very bland. I had purchased one for a first time person. They were not impressed at all. The absurd thing is that each salad cost just under seventeen dollars. I understand we are in the COVID Enviroment but I can still do fine dining for a quality salad elsewhere. I've come here a couple of times when visiting family, and I know this place is considered an institution around Jackson, but I recommend getting BBQ somewhere else. The service is friendly and the people are nice enough, but BBQ here is mediocre, at best. The portions are pretty small, especially considering the prices they charge. Anyone that smokes their own pulled pork has pretty high standards and feels offended when they get some pork that was obviously cooked in the oven. This place is the opposite of that. You can smell the woodsmoke from the parking lot. They nail the pork. Great hickory flavor and lots of tasty bark mixed throughout. I like their mild sauce more than the hot because it's more vinegar less tomato based. Fries are hand cut and good. Great slaw. Delicious barbecue!!! Fast, friendly, folksy service; they ask you how it was and really *care* about the answer. The pulled pork is my favorite, and I can vouch for both the sandwich and the platter. I like their beans, and they also have excellent sweet potato fries and big, fat beer battered onion rings. They have three sauce choices on every table: Hot (my fave: bright red with pepper flakes and cumin), Mild (very smoky and good), and the Sweet (very thin, almost maple-y tasting); all are good, but my fiance' actually said today, "This meat is so good that you don't even *need* sauce." Also try the Hot on the onion rings; it's delectable. They also have great ice. I know it's weird to cite this as a "pro"; but I'm an ice fiend, and these are the great crumbly pellets of ice. Stopped here on my way to New Orleans as it was conveniently located right off 55. Based on reviews I ordered the ham and cheese sandwich platter with a side salad with comeback sauce and tater salad. The ham was moist and flavorful and properly messy as the sandwich fell apart while I was eating it. I love comeback sauce so that was great for a Midwesterner like myself. The tater salad was more like mashed potatoes but tasted like potato salad, I thought the flavor was a little off. My bf got the pulled pork sandwich platter with baked beans and home fries. The beans were delicious, they had big chunks of ham and a zing to them. The home fries were boring, but the reason for the lower rating was that the pulled pork was extremely underwhelming, which was disappointing for a place claiming to be "voted the best BBQ in ms." It was dry and lacked flavor. The available sauces (mild, spicy & sweet) were lackluster, but sweet was the best to add some moisture to the pork. The other people who came in and out (and through the drive thru) all seemed to be regulars though so maybe I missed the secret menu. I've had Hickory Pit cater to a couple of my companies/agencies before and I've tried them on more than one ocassion on my own free will and accord. With saying all that, they just do not hit me in the wow category. I feel BBQ should be comforting, down home type cuisine and not commercial and Hickory Pit just has this commercial flavor to it. Their portions speak to that commercial, bottom line - one scoop here, a few slices on the scale there. The Hickory Pit is in a nice neighborhood and they have Fox news playing for the southern conservative and it just doesn't speak to me. Take this review with a grain of salt, since I'm an out-of-towner here for a month. As for my barbeque memories, there is The Rib Shack from my hometown in Illinois, and Lil' Porgy's where I went to medical school, and really nothing else in my gastronomic history worth mentioning. I happened to find Hickory Pit randomly looking for dinner on a rainy Monday night. The decor is rustic, with antique soda ads, and wooden knick-knacks. A small TV with FOX News playing softly in the background adds authenticity to me. There is only one table occupied Service is excellent and friendly, but I only had takeout, so can't comment in detail. I had the full slab of ribs, with cole slaw, fries, potato salad, baked beans. The meat was flavorful, but not quite tender enough, and the sauce was sugary smooth but lacked heat. I prefer thicker, saltier fries, but I liked the bits of pork and pepper in the baked beans. I love the BBQ pork with slaw on the sandwich and the sweet sauce is "to die for." Food's excellent. You have to get by the corny, country store look of the place and mediocre soft drinks but the real heart of the menu, the BBQ, is great. I had the mild sauce, which was still a bit spicy for me. In fact, that's the only reason they got four stars and not five- I think they rely on heat too much in their sauce recipie. They miss some flavor. But the meat itself, even without sauce is pretty awesomely flavored. The sides and desserts aren't standout but they are tasty. I have ate a lot of BBQ and I will say I won't be going back to Hickory Pit, it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good. I got the pulled pork sandwich, potato salad, and baked beans. The beans were really good, and that's about it. The potato salad was the worst I have ever had and tasted like it was out of a container at Walmart. The pulled pork was dry, so I loaded it up with sauce. The sauce was alright. The bun however was a cheap, generic, nothing great bun. My husband had the same feeling as I did. I'd rather go to Sonny's or make my own BBQ in the crockpot then spend $25 for two meals and sweet tea. The food is exactly what you would expect, southern bbq. I had the half cluck and fries. I could tell that the chicken was smoked, and overall it had a great flavor. I'd order it again. The place has various homeade pies as well, each of these looked better than the next. But honestly, the reason for the 3 stars? The atmosphere of the place is just bad. I have to give Hickory Pit the Best BBQ in Jackson as well. Been in business forever, always have had good bbq. Locally owned/operated family style place. Relatively easy to access off I-55, and several small unique shops to visit after lunch right behind them. Voted Best BBQ several times in Jackson Free Press. I like my ribs falling off the bone in big meaty chunks, and theirs requires a bit more effort to get off bone, but they aren't bad. I much prefer the pulled pork and chicken plates and sandwiches. I get the pulled pork plate most of the time. I love the baked beans! Oh and noone has mentioned the Hershey Bar pie, which has always been their "trademark" dessert.
