Full disclosure, I didn't actually sleep here, at least not yet. I came with my daughter and this was to be her first hostel experience (my wife and I had already booked a B & B). We did avail ourselves of a full walk around tour (to help my daughter get settled in). So my review is based on that walk around.
Let me just say that I've stayed in hostels throughout the Canadian Rockies and one or two in California. However I've never seen a hostel like this before. This is the Howard Johnson of youth hostels! So let's begin with a description.
If you don't want to spend your money at the very reasonable café for breakfast or lunch, you can use the chef's kitchen to make anything you want. There are four gas grills, three microwaves, countless toasters and two ovens. There's also a wall of refrigerated food storage. Of course they have the usual dining and cooking pots and dishes. It's quite amazing really. When you're ready to eat there's numerous tables, one big long table, and three very private group booths that you must see to believe. If none of this suits you, the hostel is just a short walk from the heart of Jasper's Townsite.
After dinner you can sit next to a fireplace, shoot some pool, relax in the sauna, or park yourself at the millennial table (a table against the wall with computers for your use). Incredible!
When you are ready to get back to your bed, you swipe your access card at the elevator because stairs are so 20th century. You then swipe into your room area which has three separate rooms for the shower, toilet and two sinks (each in a separate room) to be shared by the small number of people in that bunk group which consists of four beds in two, two level bunks. However your evening is not over yet. On the headboard of each bunk is a small reading light and several plugins for your electronic gadgets so that they're never far from you or under charged. All that is left are the heating controls and four very large lockers (but bring your own lock). Between the small rooms, the swipe access entry and the lockers, you and your things are very secure.
Did I miss anything? Well yes I did. Apparently you can rent a guitar for free.
I'm very impressed. This is a wonderful hostel and it's about time that Jasper had an amazing amenity like this as the hostel that I used when I was my daughter's age was up a steep hill and several kms out of town. You will love it here. Check out the photos. read more
