Vacation | Couple The worst experience I have ever had on a holiday, checked in yesterday 10th July to a broken sink, reported straight away told no maintenance until tomorrow, got up the next morning to broken shower bursting all over, went to reception requested room change, told no by the inexperienced receptionist, asked for manager told no to that, told maintenance man start's at 9am, wrapped towels round shower head so we could shower, went out to come back to make shift shower repair and no sink repair, totally diabolic, never again this is the pits over $1000 for 3 nights, the TV doesn't even work!!! You have to some how connect it to your phone???? No idea how this works so we sat in silence reading at night. read more

Well to start with the property is very very old and looks it. Only stairs like back in the old west days. The railings are worn and ragged and I suspect Wyatt ERP stayed here when looking for bad guys from down south. We got the last room available after several weeks of reservations, the room is tiny with the sink outside the bathroom, the room was at least 90 degrees F with the baseboard heating running and the small window unit off. The carpet is dirty and stained and the bed looked dirty and slept in. The manager assured me that they have been extremely busy and that of course the linens were clean and fresh regardless of what they looked like. Speaking of the manager, he was less than interested in our business to begin with and made sure we knew it. I'm still trying to figure out what being extremely busy has to do with clean linens?? Seems to me the opposite would apply. For the amount of money they charge you would think they could fix the place up and make it presentable. Maybe even hire a professional manager who understands what customer service is. But then again there's so many people looking for rooms and so few rooms in jasper why bother!! read more

While it has a great location on the Main Street going for it, it is way overpriced given the noise level in the room (next door, 8 feet away, is the pizza place's roof top patio which entertained until after midnight on a Sunday night of all things). And the "free" WiFi is unreliable at best and then extremely slow to the point of being unusable even when you are sitting in the lobby. In short, not worth the price.... read more

We got to Jasper in the wee hour of the night so didn't have much time hotel shopping. The Stairs are squeaky and not designed for a lot of use. The room is unpleasant and the washroom was so bad I had to wear slippers in the shower!! WiFi is free which is good. There is a pub downstairs which serves decent wings and a breakfast, The parking is across the street and feels unsafe. I would not recommend this place. The Astoria Hotel is definately a budget hotel. However, for this area it was significantly cheaper than all of the competition. Since it was important to me to save my money for dining and activities versus the hotel, I am happy with what I paid for at the Astoria Hotel. The good: 1. Room is clean. Bedding is clean and the bathrooms are clean. That's the most important thing to me. 2. There is free wi-fi throughout the hotel. The last place I stayed with free wi-fi was a Sherton in Manhatten, and that hotel only had free wi-fi in the lobby, so this is definately an improvement. 3. There is a TV, DVD, coffee maker, a tiny little fridge and an alarm clock. Also see an air conditioner on the wall. Bonus! 4. About 30 minutes after my checkout, I received an email thanking me for my stay, welcoming feedback, as well as a discount code for 25% off the retail price of my next room booking. Excellent! 5. Beds were comfortable. The room had two twin beds. I was travelling with my buddy Sheila, and both of us had a good sleep with no complaints on the comfort of the matress. The facts: 1. The room is quite small, but I wouldn't expect a suite for $130 a night in jasper. I am travelling with a girlfriend of mine, and the room has two twin beds. There is approximately one foot between my bed and the wall, and two feet between the twin beds. That bed shares an edge with the bathroom sink. On the other side of the sink is the door to the bathroom. So the room is tiny. 2. Decor is powder blue walls and bedding, accented with light oak. Bedskirt is beige, with little pink flowers and vines. So yeah... the decor has not been upgraded. However, at this price, I am looking for a bed. 3. There is no hot tub, swimming or workout facility. Wouldn't expect it at these prices, but I have been in other budgets that do have them. Just sayin... not complaining :) Room for improvement 1. Room smelled a tad musty when we walked in. Not enough to walk back out again and move locations. However, I don't think the windows have been opened in here since the fall. After 2 minutes and a cracked window, we didn't notice it anymore. Problem solved. Just too bad we were the ones to solve it. 2. In the bathroom, there was a bit of a sour smell coming out of the drain in the bathroom. Not cool. However, our first shower resolved the issue pretty quickly. Again, I think its just because the room may not have been used in awhile. So, despite the feedback, would I stay here again? Absolutely! For a short visit of one or two nights, the price was worth a few blips. However, if I was staying longer than that, I'd spring more cash for a better place. read more

Sheets were very obviously dirty and slept in, but the bed was made like the room was "cleaned" hairs, dirt, crumbs, and pine needles all under the blanket on top of the sheets. When requested clean sheets I was given attitude at the front desk. Floors had some sticky liquid stains and were obviously not even swept or vacuumed after the last guests... Not a recommended place.. for the same price you can get a much better place anywhere else in town. read more

I think most of the people complaining about the cost of the Astoria Hotel didn't get as good a deal as I did. After some intense searching, my friend found a deal on Hotels.com that worked out to a mere $88/night after all the taxes were applied. For that price I definitely think we got our money's worth. That being said, I wouldn't be pleased if I had paid full-price. Pros: -Right in the heart of Jasper, a quick walk from all the main restaurants and bars in town -Clean, cozy, and comfortable. This hotel is nothing fancy but it was definitely welcoming (albeit the decor was very dated). -Friendly, helpful staff. We had a bunch of questions and everyone we encountered at the hotel was ready and willing to help. -Free wi-fi. You just need to remember to go down to the desk and get a new password every 24 hours. Cons -No on-site parking. If you have a vehicle, you have to find street or lot parking elsewhere. We managed to always find a spot within a couple blocks but I could imagine this being a real issue if you were visiting during peak season. -Tiny little shower. While I'm fairly short and didn't find this to be a major issue, my 6ft+ friend had to crouch down when using it. -The room was pretty tiny. That being said, we didn't spend much time in the room but I could see this bothering someone who had planned on it. Overall I am pleased with our visit. I would definitely consider the Astoria again if I manage to get a similar deal. read more

What a cute, quaint little hotel. Is it in need of an update? Sure. But you know what? It was a nice place to stay for the night and conveniently located on the main street. I stayed in a miniature room with 2 twin beds, and the bathroom was like a little toilet closet with a shower that I was taller than - but you know what? I wasn't expecting the Ritz. The bed was comfortable enough, and the restaurant downstairs had a great $8.50 breakfast special (but in case you want a bit more, there is a Smitty's around the corner where you can get pancakes!) The staff was very friendly. I loved being able to walk the town just by stepping outside the hotel. I would stay here again. read more

Super cute hotel! Our room was tiny (and $225 because of the long weekend plus Tour of Alberta) but very clean and charming. It's located right in the middle of the main street, so everything is nearby! So many restaurants & bars, and of course the souveneir shops! Our sleep was great, but in the morning the housekeeping staff were hanging out right in front of door and chatting up a storm. Woke us up & kept us up, but that's probably a good thing because we had to hit the road early! I am hoping the price was jacked up because of all the things going on, because if $225 is the normal price for that room, i don't think I'd stay again. read more

Average. That is really the best way to describe this place. It was not awful, but it was not the best. We wanted budget and the is exactly what we received. The room was small for two people. The bathroom was very small that you almost had to be outside of the bathroom to open the shower door. And the sink was outside of the shower/toliet bathroom aka closet. The shower is also very very tiny. So if you're larger than your average bear, be warned. They did have an air conditioner which is nice on those hot days, but also helpful if you get too warm in the small room. Especially after a shower. It was clean, though the carpets were stained in places. No bed bugs so that is always a plus. To my knowledge there was no elevator. So be warned that you are hauling bags up stairs to the rooms. They had vending machines in the hallway if you needed. Papa George's connected to the lobby is a good place and convenient place to eat. Parking is in the lot across the road by the train tracks. Seems a little uncertain, but it would be no different than parking on your street at night. The staff was very friendly. I would stay again, if I wanted somewhere that was easy access and cheap. read more

Positive: this hotel is affordable and the location is perfect, in the city center and easy to around. There's a couple of big public car parks opposite the hotel and at the back that is free. The room is clean and equipped with basic necessities: coffee maker, toiletries including make up remover (a big plus). We really love the big comfy bed too. Negative: the whole structure of the hotel is wood so we could hear people walking, going in and out their rooms, talking etc. it's really hard to have a good night sleep. read more

Perhaps the worst hotel experience in Jasper I've ever had. Went the Easter weekend, our TV didn't work and then I went to phone down to the desk to tell them about it, that also didn't work. We left the room for cleaning next morning and came back to our room to find the door wide open and no one in it. Thankfully nothing was stolen. We also easily over heard the clean staff in the hallway bitchin about other guests with all kinds of foul language and insults. They didn't think we were in the room on the daytime. Poor form people!! For the TV, The desk clerk said to just unplug the TV and wait a while.The hot water in the shower would come and go. Rooms are so super small and extra loud as poorly insulated. Should be. $90 a night hostel, not 160. It has a good location and they try to get by on this alone. STAY ELSEWHERE! read more

I came to Jasper for the weekend looking for a budget room. At $90/night on hotels.com, I was very happy with the Astoria. The hotel has an older feel to it. The carpets are outdated as is much of the room, but the hotel seems clean and the staff are friendly. I've seen other reviews that complain about the size of the room. The room was small, the bed was older but comfortable and the washroom was about the same size as a decent sized closet. Since we didn't come to Jasper to hang out in the room, none of this is a problem for us. The De'd Dog Bar, which is attached to the hotel, is a decent place for some food and drinks. Daily drink and food specials. We had a poutine which was pretty good by Alberta standards. Real cheese curds! Overall I liked the atmosphere at this hotel. It is located near the center of the main strip, so you are within walking distance of virtually all of the restaurants and shopping locations in Jasper. I would definitely stay here again in the future. read more

If you are alone, you might have enough space in their closet-sized rooms. Otherwise, look for another place, or you will not have anywhere to place your luggage let alone sleep. I thought small can be cozy, but it's not really the case here - rooms are a bit dated, in an uncool, 70s sort of way. Staff was helpful enough, though. If you are visiting from the States, you will not find this hotel to be worth your money. However, if you are from Canada, you might be used to overpriced hotels and restaurants, so it might be OK. But I'd look for rooms elsewhere first. read more

I booked two rooms for two nights. Our room was ok, since the portable AC kept the temperature tolerable and masked the noise from downstairs (a bar, a pizza joint, a busy sidewalk, etc). But it took a few hours each night to get lulled to sleep by the loud roaring from the portable AC three feet away from the bed. The double bed was more like a twin, but everything in our room was pretty clean except the carpets that had been through a couple world wars. Shower was great, but the bathroom was about the size of a tight little coat closet. OK for me as my wife and I are not large persons. However, my brother and his wife next door had a much worse experience. My brother's room was lousy, with two twin beds for him and his wife, where I was promised a queen in each room when I booked these through hotels.com. O well, this is nail-the-tourist done right, so we made do. But his AC never did work, and the lackadaisacal desk help's only comment was "the least we could do is replace the AC." My brother who travels a great deal, was a bit put off to be told he was getting their "least" rather than the hotel staff showing any interest in helping improve his stay at this place. Wifi was available, but only by asking the front desk clerk once or twice a day for a slip of paper with a working username and password on it. The food in the downstairs bar was good and relatively cheap, considering that any place to eat in a Banff or Jasper national park restaurant has a visitor tax of 300% added to what should be ordinary food prices. Parking was good. We always felt safe. The lobby is "quaint" and I likely will return to Jasper some day--just not to this particular joint. read more

Ok, don't be fooled by the words "boutique hotel". Really I think it's just a designation you can claim if you only have fewer than X rooms and you are not a chain. It may imply luxury to some but that's definitely not the case at the Astoria. But what it is, is one of the most centrally locates hotels in jasper and also (for the weekend we went) the cheapest on the main road. So if you want cheap accommodations that are clean and centrally located, this is for you. However, make sure your expectations for the rooms are very low as the hotel is pretty old, dated and there is no air conditioning. There's a fan but it looks 100 years old, pretty dirty and doesn't work great. Obviously this isn't a problem in the winter. The room we stayed in was at the end of the hall and even though the hotel was fully booked we couldn't hear our neighbors which is a plus. I read somewhere that their rooms are pretty insulated. All in all it was fine for a last minute weekend getaway at a very reasonable price but I was also glad to leave. read more

This hotel was WAY overpriced for the value and condition of the place. I was given a room with a window that looked onto a rooftop between two portions of the building that had a garden of sorts on top of it. The point being that the rooftop seemed to be accessible by someone from somewhere. That made the fact that the window in my room would not lock a bit concerning. The screen to the window was torn as well. When I turned the light on in the bathroom a hideously loud "barking" noise came out of the combination light/fan that was unbearable. I had to use the bathroom without the light/fan turned on. The pluses are that the hotel is very nicely located and the woman at the front desk was extremely nice and polite. But for the condition of the place, the price was ridiculous. read more

Wow, can't believe that for the price I paid I heard trains starting at 3 am almost every hour until dawn. On top of that I picked off two bed bugs - one on my pillow and the other running across the sheet on my wife's side. I tried to snag it before she woke but that didn't happen. I'd strongly recommend avoiding this place if you can. First, it's called a "Hotel," but fails to meet the quality commonly associated with hotels as opposed to motels or hostels. We were given a tiny room, with a sink placed next to our bed, and shattered glass. They put together two twin beds together to make a king-sized bed. As mentioned in other reviews, the bathroom is extremely tiny, with the toilet and the shower literally one step away from each other. The carpet was filthy. The room was unusually hot and stuffy. Their wifi didn't work. My fiancé found online reviews about previous bed bug outbreaks at this hotel. We had to examine the bed more carefully, and found black dots that looked like beg bug poops on the head board, the mattress, and the pillows. After attempting to sleep in our car instead, we gathered up the courage to confront the hotel staff. The lady came up to our room with us, and did not confirm that any of the black marks or stains were evidence associated with bed bugs. She claimed that "we're not the only hotel with bed bug infestation;" then, offered to switch us to another room. She wasn't very nice about it, though. She pretty much said that the hotel does bed bug inspection regularly, and that we could go find alternative accommodation if we wanted to. Hello, are you giving us a full refund? or providing us with an alternative place to go to? It was already late at night and we didn't have the money or time to find another place to stay the night. The room she switched us to, had a working AC, and we didn't find any black marks or stains. We still slept with no comforters, and even left some light on. For $250 a night, I didn't think I'd be suffering. In their 90 years of operation, I do not know if they ever did any renovation since opening. We had to stay at this place, because they had literally last few rooms available in the town of Jasper. It's too bad that there are limited accommodation options in Jasper. I'm definitely checking out online reviews more thoroughly before I book a hotel room for my next trip. In the end, no bed bug bites or bed bug infestation back home, so I am relieved. If we ended up staying the night at the room they first gave us, I'm not sure what might have happened. read more

Good little hotel for young people wouldn't want to stay here with a family but if you're travelling by yourself or skiing and looking for cheap accommodation this is the perfect place to go. Tiny rooms with not much more than beds and a fridge, small tv and the bathrooms are about 2ft by 8ft but it is cozy and a decent little place to stay if you're looking for every reasonable price, wifi and something in the centre of all of Jasper. read more

This hotel had its hay day in the early 90s, as can been seen by the pastel decor, and has been trying to relive those days ever since. I would describe it as like staying in your grandparents extremely tiny basement suite. I'm a size small and I barely fit in the shower. The bed might be one of the hardest most uncomfortable beds I have ever slept in and I'm pretty sure they have a plastic like cover over the pillows inside the cases. BUT, I gave it a second star because at least it was clean. If you're ever in Jasper without other options like we were, it'll do. read more

To start off, let me just say that this has been the most dreadful stay for me by far. For $200 a night, I expected something more than an old, outdated TV and coffee maker. The bathroom was very small, with the washroom door centimeters away from hitting the toilet. In the hotel's defense of its old furniture and appliances, they said that most of their guests come to their hotel to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. However, in the standard rooms, you see typical trees that you can see outside of the hotel. Not to mention the fact that the bulky air conditoner made it difficult to get to the window itself. For the mountain view rooms, you would have to pay extra to view mountains from a small two story building. With only two stories, you can easily see the mountains if you step out of the hotel, considering the photo taken of the Astoria Hotel and the mountains behind it in the website was taken outside the hotel on the sidewalks. It was dirty and the photos on their website were very misleading. Their website boasts, "This small hotel features Jasper National Park lodging with character and charm...". There was no aspect of charm during my stay at all. I am extremely dissastified with my stay and how I spent $200 for ONE NIGHT in a hotel I should only have to pay less than $100 for. The quality of my stay and the hotel is much less of a "boutique hotel" than what the Astoria Hotel proclaimed on their website. read more

Good location, and very walkable to downtown Jasper. I liked Jasper much better than Banff, as it's smaller and less busy. Before I get started, I did enjoy staying here. I wasn't expecting a 4 Star resort. This is a tiny mountain town. I would stay here again. Stayed in both a Standard Room and a Mountain View room. Both were clean with no issues. I liked the decor in the mountain room view better. It was decorated in an "outdoorsy" way with lots of wood. The Standard room was in 1985 motif. The Mountain view room does indeed have a view of the mountains, but it also looks down on the main road below, but worse yet, the train station across the street. There are frequently diesel locomotives idling outside for long periods of time, and the low frequency drone of these large engines can be bothersome. It was barely above freezing outside but I ran the air conditioner to help drown out the trains. The bathroom fixtures are dated. There was a plumbing vent in the floor of room 101 and you could hear gurgling occasionally and you could sometimes get a whiff of what smelled like the sewer system coming out of the drain. The mattress wasn't a true king, but two mattresses pushed together. Pillows were hard and unforgiving. Mountain view room had a flat screen TV, standard room had a tube TV. Standard room was very small. No place to put your suitcases. I did appreciate having a mini fridge in both rooms. Water pressure was not great in either, but Mountain view room was worse. Overall, I'd still choose the Mountain Room view, even with the trains. The decoration is nicer and it's ever so slightly larger. The wifi system is horrendous. It's very slow, sporadic, and cumbersome to log in to, if you're able to get to the logon screen at all. All staff members were friendly. Decent breakfast in the adjoining restaurant at a decent price for a tourist town. With as much money as this hotel is obviously taking in, I don't understand why they haven't renovated the rooms in such an obviously long time. Where is all the cash going? read more

This place is neither quaint nor charming - it's rundown and overpriced. We had to straddle the toilet to close the bathroom door, the tub was cracked, the desk chair was broken, and the A/C consisted of something that looked like a large electric oxygen concentrator with an eight-inch hose that vented out the only window in the room (and prevented the window blind from descending for the bottom eight inches of the window. No one wants to see a sixty-year-old woman getting dressed and undressed when it's dark outside, and the window is on the main drag for the town, and across the street from the town parking lot! Oh yeah, the hotel's parking is the town parking lot - good luck finding a spot to access your room. Last straw - they charged us for a mountain view, when there wasn't one, even though their website promised a mountain view was included in the price. Expect to dispute your charge with your credit card company - there is nothing honest or honorable about these folks! read more

Beware. Bedbugs!!! Stayed Friday night and was bitten so badly. Looked on the bottom of the mattress and there is black bed bug feces everywhere!!! Stay away!!! We only stayed in THIS hotel and no where else and do not have bed bugs at home. Looking at other reviews elsewhere other people have had same issue!! read more
