a drink in a glass with a straw

I loved this place. Stopped by on a Tuesday night after munching on some food at the Garage right down the hallway. Walking from a very modern decorated bar to an underground retro bar is definitely an experience to be had. Whereas the Garage is more of a beer bar, this section was more cocktail, and what stood out is it's very unique list. I was browsing the list of employee-crafted cocktails and picked out my drink of choice when the bartender asked "what do you like to drink?" I told him I liked tequila, he said he might have something for me and asked me if I wanted to try it. I liked the assertiveness, and I will drink anything a professional makes for me, so I said yes!! I love bartenders who aren't afraid be creative with customers and I did actually enjoy the drink very much. Also among the frame-filled walls on the second floor, one contains a series of up-skirt shots of women maybe flashing the camera (it was too dark and high up for me to actually be able to tell).

    The deals.

We stopped by on Monday PM for the $5 burgers and Happy Hour 1/2 price draft beers. The converted cellar environment is great. The bartender who waited on us was friendly and efficient. It's pretty hard to complain about a ~$15+tip tab for dinner that includes draft beers. The scaled-down (1/3-lb vice 1/2-lb) signature burgers were still pretty filling. The cross-cut fries and tots tasted fine, but weren't especially hot. OTOH, without the specials, our tab would have been more like $35+tip. And neither the lackluster draft beer selection nor the food -- even with the additional 2.666 oz of burger meat -- would stand up to that kind of pricing.

3.5 stars Nice lounge for a drink, but took a very long time to get drinks. Also, they had a DJ - which for a lounge doesnt seem too necessary and the music was very loud. Atmosphere was nice and crowd was good.

What a cool find! I had the Just Call Me Diablo on the Beach which was a delicious tequila cocktail. My man had a Kolsch beer which made him very happy! We also split the buffalo won ton appetizer which was delish! Would definitely recommend this place for really good cocktails in an unpretentious cool setting!

This place is FUN if you're coming here for late night drinks. They have nice lighting and it was pretty easy to get drinks. It's a relatively big bar since it's attached to The Garage. We met some cool people from Chicago here too! I liked this place so much that I wanted to come back the next time I was in town.

New pic over the bar. No more head platter holding chick.

Debating 3 and 4 stars.. Hi hat is one of those places that's been around a long time. I often chose to come here when I was in my 20s and without fail would get a cell phone call around midnight from a galpal informing me that I'd lost her to the vortex across the street known as jocats. I **think** it was called the hi hat because it opened in the mid nineties during that very brief time when 'swing' music was in. Anyhow... I really usually like the hihat, especially the partially subterranean lounge (the garage not so much). It always exudes a certain atmosphere that's hard to duplicate. The music is pretty eclectic like the crowd. People dress up, dress down; you'll see people from the neighborhood, college kids, couples, biz types, etc. Their drinks evolved with the times and they went from makin a mean metropolitan to a chocolate martini to a flavored mojito, to the other night when they were making drinks from the 1920s and concoctions involving egg whites. Drinks are pricey but good. There food is really good too. Ive had their brunch, and especially in the summer when you can sit out on Brady, its very inviting. Where they *occasionally* lose me is the service. We had a great bartender the other night, and I've had other good servers, but I've had a lot of times when its crowded and hard to get served. And other times when it felt like the staff thought I wasn't good enough to be there. (Boo!) Buuuuut...I'm on a new years resolution to not be petty like that, so let's go with 4 stars. Side note: the giant statue of the woman holding a head on a plate (you'd have to have seen it) is gone. A large picture has replaced it and we were told the idea is to have rotating art there.

They do a tremendous job of explaining the menu and food options in detail, and ensure you have a great experience from start to finish. The drinks? Nothing short of amazing. They vary the featured cocktails menu every 8 weeks, so most likely you'll get a different experience every time you go. However you can always get your classic cocktails like Margaritas, French 75 and Martinis. They also can do any drink NA which is the first of its kind in the US. They have an option called dealers choice, where you can pick the spirit and flavor profile of the drink you want: spicy, sour, floral, smoky etc. no limits! You write down on a card what you want and they craft you a cocktail based on your selections. They also offer a variety of food pairings to go along with the select, featured drink you order. We got spring rolls, a braised, pork infused doughnut, and an incredible bone broth that still has me in a tizzy. Fair warning: it's small and difficult to get a reservation - don't try your luck walking in, this place is a hot ticket and you won't be able to get in without a resy, which could be weeks or months out. This is a true gem of a cocktail bar, and is as good as anything you would find in New York or Chicago.

We stopped here after dinner, so we stuck mostly with the cocktails. Unfortunately, nothing on the seasonal menu really stuck out to me. I stuck with the "traditional" cocktails (spicy watermelon bubblegum, and then banana daiquiri). Hubs went for the halo halo food (which was so cute! All the typical ingredients but served in cubist fashion), and the paired drink. The paired drink was supposed to have different layers of flavor, but they all mixed together quite a bit. Tasty, just not the "layered" experience we thought. I think they almost do themselves a disservice comparing themselves to the aviary - that is a crazy high bar to meet. Granted, maybe we would have been more impressed if we had more of the seasonal cocktails despite them not seeming interesting? Probably wouldnt go out of my way to go here again, but it is a cool vibe and the cocktails were good.

While the menu is limited and not cheap, staff were very friendly and walked us through everything before we selected a couple of things to try. Pretty much all of the cheeses and accoutrements were fantastic! One of the cheese on our plate was the espresso version of Bellavitano, which happens to be one of my favorites, so that was a nice little bonus for me. In addition to the board, we also went with the ricotta bites, which featured one sweet and one savory option, both of which we also really liked. The shop is cozy and if this was somewhere that I lived walking distance from, I could totally see myself coming here fairly regularly and having a little cheese and ambiance. During our time there we saw both couples on dates and old friends gathering for a drink and a nosh, all of which I found just wonderful. Really the only thing keeping this from a five star review was that the side items, such as the crackers were not plentiful enough for the cheese. I know that ratio can be hard to nail but it was not quite on the mark here, unfortunately. However, that would not be enough to prevent me from returning!
