My wife and I came in for the first time on a Saturday evening, around 6:30 PM. The restaurant was not busy when we went in and we were able to get sat right away. The restaurant is a decent size, but probably not so great for larger parties (10+). We were greeted right away by our waitress and she was very kind and attentive throughout our entire meal. We were told the restaurant was out of particular menu items, so if you're going later in the day we'd recommend calling beforehand or asking right away. To drink I got myself a "Crown and Coke" and ordered the "Pan Seared Chicken" as my entree. The Pan Seared Chicken was DELICIOUS. The plate consisted of: an 8 oz Airline Chicken Breast, served with mashed potatoes, pearl onions, wild arugula all soaked with a Espelette Beurre Blanc. The seasoning in the chicken was so flavorful and the skin on the chicken was cooked perfectly crispy. The beurre blanc elevated all of the other components of the dish and it left me wanting more. Absolutely delicious. Aside from the delicious food and wonderful service the ambience also contributed to our experience--multiple TVs with sporting events playing and live music on a small stage. The Glen Rose square was so quaint and lovely. The shops were filled will the friendliest people and unique finds, excellent prices. We stopped in at HH supply on the square for dinner . We loved the rustic charm and friendly service. I ordered a ribeye which had an excellent flame grilled flavor. Sadly, that was the only thing that had flavor. My Brussels sprouts tasted bland and barely cooked, Mac and cheese wanted to be good, but missed the mark. My wife a wagyu burger that looked like a burger but lacked any flavor. The homemade fries were soggy and squishy. Dessert was a cookie skillet with vanilla ice cream and a chocolate swirl cheesecake. Do you remember having covid where food lost all taste? You knew what you were eating, but tasted nothing? Unfortunately that was our meal . Staff were lovely, peppy and full of joy. Sadly it didn't seep over into the food. I'm looking forward to coming back to glen rose to explore more, it just won't be here. read more

This would be a 1 star if the food wasn't so spectacularly good. Hats off to the chef. However - Order beer & wine from the bar, cause they don't know their ass from the well. We tried to find out the drink prices, and had to ask 3 times. The third time I saw the waitresses scoffing and acting like we were stupid for wanting to know how much we were paying for items. So we cancelled our drinks & left. I would have spent another $50 but they made us feel bad and it was honestly awful. Fortunately one of them forgot to charge me for a $12 glass of wine. Had a wonderful time at Blackies! We were originally going to check out another spot in downtown Glen Rose, but that place was too busy and apparently required reservations. We arrive at Blackie's and get seated right away. The place is not busy at all, there's a lot of seating available, but there were some people sitting at the bar. I was a little concerned at first because the place gave more of a sport-bar kind of vibe and wasn't sure how the quality of the food was going to be, but we were proven wrong! I ordered their special - Blackened Snapper with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts and that fish was sooo nicely cooked. Our meal did take a while to arrive, but we were watching a softball game which kept us busy and then eventually enjoying some live music. I'm so curious on how that snapper was prepared, I was it marinated in some sort of pork / bacon butter or oil or seasoning of some kind? My mouth was having a party! Just loved this dish! Overall it was a wonderful time and the service was excellent too. Can't find a table at that other place down the street? Come to Blackies instead! read more

Saturday afternoon and the time was right for a late lunch in old downtown Glen Rose, Texas. Read the menu (chalkboard) of the day's specials, peeked in and the place seemed to have the ambiance of a laid back, easy going, curated decor, niche of comfy place to be. Decided to sit at this expansive beautiful wooden bar, had a couple drinks, placed our lunch order and visited while taking in the scenery. Excellent bartender (Camden or Caden?) took care of us. Wide variety of beers, okay set of wine and there were a few specials on mixed drinks. Didn't need an appetizer, went directly to the entree ordering. My Hubble ordered the Wagyu beef burger and fries, i ordered the Cobb salad and pasta fennel soup (it sounded exotic and different). Not long and there was the food! Husband said the burger was great, the fries so-so. I had to try them and I'd suggest after frying these homemade/onsite veggies I'd suggest air fryer to crisp them up. The salad was excellent and the clear broth veggie/pasta soup was over the top amazing due to herbs, limited spices and aromatics. Ended up meeting up with the chef on my way to the bathroom and he explained the recipe and options on making it. I think I'll just show up every so often for another bowl of that super duper soup. This is truly a Texas cuisine restaurant but also has a beautiful bar and exposed brick walls. Feels like an old west saloon. Had very comfy chairs! Tip top experience. read more

Being local, we wanted to finally give the "new" place a try. Came in for happy hour and decided to order dinner as well. The old fashioned and margarita were average at best. We ordered the fish special and a chicken fried steak -- and that's where the wheels fell off. We sat there. And sat there. And sat there. Meanwhile we're the ONLY people in the place at 5:00PM on a Friday afternoon. After 45 minutes of watching the cook eat over the food prep area in the kitchen and not cooking anything, we finally asked the bartender about our food. Wait staff is nice, attentive and friendly. Food just uninspiring. We had the Wagyu burger. How is this any different from a regular burger. There is none, no taste difference no texture difference nothing different except an opportunity to charge more. HEALTH CODE VIOLATION!! The cook (not a chef) was eating nachos, licking his fingers THEN making peoples food. Like grabbing a sandwich roll and buttering it just after licking his fingers! Disgusting! When he saw me look he hid under the counter in the kitchen so he could finish his chip. Bartender had no idea what the special was (domestic beer w/ nachos $11). I told the manager / owner(?) what I saw. He shook his head and laughed. I guess I expected a more serious response, but I do understand getting decent help these days is tough. Service was okay even though it took 25 minutes to get a wedge salad with chicken and a cubano sandwich with fries. The wedge salad came with baked in bone chicken and the wedge, normally being a quarter of a head of lettuce, was about half of that. 13 bucks. My cubano was small, with a mixture of porkbelly and ham with little to no cheese and a few pickles. 13 bucks. I wont be back. read more

If I could give zero I would. Not often I've walked out of a place but after 30+ minutes with no much more than an acknowledgement from one of the two servers it was time to cut our losses and move on down the road. If the place was busy it would have been one thing but that wasn't necessarily the case. No telling how long it would have taken if we had even been able to order food. But when you walk into a bar, sit at the empty bar, and you don't even get to order a drink something is wrong. read more

Flys are everywhere...then finally comes a tiny overpriced sandwich with 3oz of brisket in it and potatoes chips out of the microwave and just the nastiest & I mean NASTIEST Mac n' cheese I have ever had, covered in oil..couldn't get myself to eat it... soda's all tasted like they poured half the can and filled the rest of the glass with water. NEVER MIND THE SMOKE OF BURNT OIL COMING FROM THE KITCHEN, just overpowering your nasal passages for 2 hours engulfed in it. Best part was leaving. NO STARS. read more

Went in with my family for lunch and we waited an hour for our food and finally had to walk out! The overall atmosphere is nice but they definitely don't have the capacity to handle anything more than two customers to a table! After waiting 15-20 mins for our drinks and our orders to be taken, we waited around and watched other people and even the owners get their food and eat! An hour in, we ask our waitress, how much longer and she says the smaller orders were taken care of first before starting on our bigger order of 8. Definitely won't be going back here! read more

I stopped here in late November to pick up something to eat. I was very disappointed to see that no one, including staff, was wearing a mask. The place was at least half full but there did not appear to be distancing enforced between tables. While passing through small towns during the pandemic, it has become apparent that safety measures are much more lax. The front door was wide open so I guess they were trying to keep air circulating. Otherwise, this looks like it would be a fun place to hear live music or watch a game and have something to eat and drink. While waiting for my food I ordered the Cotton Candy Mimosa, which I realize is a novelty cocktail that came out like a decade ago but I had never found one on a menu until now. I pushed all the cotton candy inside the flute and it immediately overflowed. I asked for a napkin to wipe up the wasted alcohol (so sad and shameful) and the bartender said that typically happens with the Cotton Candy Mimosa. Would have been nice if the drink came with that warning. My to go order was the grilled cheese sticks served with a rich and spicy tomato soup for dipping. It was good but both the sandwich and soup were just slightly lacking, like maybe some salt and/or pepper or other spicy would have made it delicious. read more

This has been a Go-To place for us for the last year. The menu was okay but mostly sandwiches. Well no more. The menu got smaller but so much better. Chef Mario was amazing. We had the chili rellenos and the roasted yardbird. Both dishes were amazing. Both came with a salad and the chicken came with a baked sweet potato. We had a wonderful dessert.
