I hired Hey Chef to help with the stress of entertaining up to 36 guests over the Thanksgiving week. They were scheduled to serve lunch for 21 and dinner for 36 on Wednesday 11/26, as well as 32 for dinner on Friday 11/28. Wednesday lunch was tasty, however the brioche slider buns per the menu were actually regular Safeway rolls, not brioche. 12 for $6.49! The dessert fell short of anything remotely high level. The brownies on skewers with fruit were dry and fell off the skewers. Wednesday dinner was a disaster. I ordered food for 36 people. We only had 32 including 6 kids, so we should have had plenty. We ran out of asparagas 2/3 of the way thru the line. the platter had enough for 12-15 people. The shrimp - one of the two main courses - ran out as well. I will try to attach a picture of the shrimp before anyone touched it! The photo (pre-serving) looks like there couldn't have been more than 40-50 shrimp. The chef told me he purchased 4-5/person. That would have been 180 shrimp! That was an out and out lie. I ate nothing, as we ran out of food. The owner did tell me afterwards that she looked at the grocery receipt, and he hadn't purchased enough. The dessert was not cake as planned. It appeared to be more of the same brownies, and they were not great. Friday dinner was okay. It was a taco bar. The chef put too much rice in the pot, and it boiled over onto our hardwood floor, rice and all. Then lots of wet garbage was put into the trash compactor, breaking it. The food was tasty and there was enough, but there was nothing high-end about it. Since the event, the owner admitted to me that they had never used the chef before. This was a huge mistake to send out an unknown for 3 large, very expensive meals. There was nothing "gourmet" about his preparation or presentation. Also, the owner admitted to me that the chef knew he was going to be short on dinner on Wednesday. He had a 3 hour break between the two services when he could have purchased more food. We believe that we were grossly overcharged for the chef's time. We were charged over 24 hours for his time alone on Wednesday. The food was supposed to be prepared in our home, but most of it was not. I was not presented with the grocery receipts, so I imagine those could have been inflated. With 21 for lunch, and 32 for both of the dinners, I paid $150/person/meal - over $13,000. And when you consider that one of the meals was a taco bar, the price was outrageous. I hired Hey Chef to ease my stress through the week-long holiday with a lot of guests. Instead, I was embarrassed by the shortcomings and more stressed. I expected the owner to handle these issues more professionally and issue a decent partial refund. I was offered a $300 credit towards a future booking! I am disappointed in Hey Chef for not taking responsibility for failing to come close to our expectations. I would certainly not use their services again, nor would I recommend them. read more

The event was not only executed flawlessly, but exuded elegance from start to finish. For us, we wanted a memorable event to celebrate our patriarch's 82nd birthday and that is just what we got. The Italian birthday boy considers himself an accomplished home cook and yet even he was impressed with Chef Taylor's menu and culinary creations. By all accounts, our event was a HUGE success. We also very much appreciate Hey Chef!'s support for a local nonprofit (Truckee North Tahoe Emergency Warming Center). Without small businesses like Hey Chef! (who support local non-profits) the world would be much more complicated and unduly difficult for the less fortunate. I wholeheartedly recommend HeyChef! for those special occassions where you loosen your budgetary restraints a bit in order to create lasting memories. They did it all, from purchasing and shopping to managing floral ordering and all delivery details. They communicated with me throughout the weekend and Holly & Ashleigh (& their entire service team) ensured that I could have a great time with friends rather than stress about details. I am a huge fan of HeyChef! for delicious and healthy meals served in your own home. Their lead Chef Grog is fantastic; he has the skill and insight to elevate any meal. One of my favorite dishes by Chef Grog is seafood Wellington; it is out-of-this-world delicious. And his home-made sourdough bread, hot from the oven, is sublime, with the scent of sourdough, a light and doughy interior and a wonderful crust. Nothing is better than a warm slice of Grog's sourdough bread with a bowl of his soup on a cold winter evening. My family and I have had HeyChef! provide cooking in our vacation home at Sugar Bowl. Not only was it delicious but Chef Grog is an engaging and wonderfully versatile chef. And did you know that Grog is an expert flint-knapper? At one HeyChef! dinner Grog took the time to provide a demonstration to kids on how to make obsidian arrowheads. I don't know if that's part of their normal business model! But I am fascinated by Native American culture and the kids loved watching him make arrowheads (which they got to keep afterwards!). A winter or summer season in Tahoe isn't complete without a meal prepared by HeyChef! Holly and their office team are always receptive and responsive to my calls and every request is handled without my having to get involved in the details. From the very first call with Holly to the final invoicing- this team is tip top- professional, helpful, knowledgable and all around fantastic. Our company held a corporate retreat, for a client, in Truckee. The Hey Chef! team made our event a smashing success. Chef Grog was wonderful, his talent, personality and professionalism, all tip top. Our guests felt spoiled by the food quality and service provided. Cassidy and Jen were our servers/bartenders and these ladies didn't miss a beat. They were lovely, well groomed, friendly and professional. They required no direction, they just went to work with a smile on their faces. The meals were DELICIOUS, we had the opportunity to have Chef Grog and the ladies, provide, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Unorganized and seemingly shady!! I have now heard this from many people in Tahoe!! Planning a wedding of any size can be stressful, even one for 25 people and Hey Chef added to our stress over and over again. Holly was unorganized and I had to give her the same information many times via phone and email. We gave our budget in initial email conversation and again on the phone along with the guest count. Hey Chef bills for the amount of time that it takes to prepare each menu. This is fair but, not when the amount the time it takes for a menu to be prepared takes much longer due to Hey Chef having our guest count much higher than it was. They planned the menu only to have to eliminate. Therefore time billed is wrong due to Hey Chef not writing down or looking at the guest count emails. When I sensed that we were not on the same page, I emailed one last time via email to triple check. A week later, she called with the final estimate at DOUBLE our budget. Hey Chef nickel and dimes!!! We took the chance a month before our wedding to search out an alternative. If one takes this chance, it must be bad. In the end, we found the most creative and fabulous chef.... Chef's Palette. I cannot recommend Hey Chef! enough. I wanted to have a special dinner at a reunion with friends at a rental home in Truckee. I was worried about trying to arrange a dinner party long distance in a house I'd never seen but Holly made everything so easy. They happily accommodated our request for a special entree and dealt with multiple food allergies when creating our menu. Holly even made a special trip to meet us the morning of our event to pick up some special food we had brought. Chef Grog made us an amazing meal (even the guest who doesn't care for fish LOVED the salmon dish) and was so charming with all the guests. Our server, Michelle, served us like we were royalty. And she was so wonderful with all the children at the event. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Hey Chef! for any event. So don't hesitate -- call them now and book them! read more

We had the most amazing 4th of July barbecue! Starting with the Red,white and blue frozen drinks...to the s'mores dessert, it was perfection through and through. Every dish was absolutely delicious. Our menu was varied and presented a range of food to meet all dietary issues. The presentation was fabulous and the servers were professional, so helpful and extremely friendly! They helped with set up and cleaned up the kitchen at the end. Every counter was washed down and the towels in the laundry.The pre event planning was super organized and easy. Working with CHef Grog and the Hey Chef office was great. Each guest asked for the catering information and left our home with the HEY CHEF card in their hands. Highly recommended! Chef Grog prepared a wonderful meal at our house. He called several days before to plan the menu and make suggestions. We quickly realized he was well schooled in all manners of cuisine. The meal was excellent and the kitchen was left cleaner then when he arrived. We had Christie as service staff and she added greatly to the dinner by mixing and serving drinks etc. Both Chef Grog and Christie wore uniforms and were very professional. Our family decided to spend a long weekend in Tahoe to celebrate my birthday last month and no one felt like cooking so I called Holly just 48hrs before the celebration and asked if she would be able to find a chef for the evening. She was very responsive and accommodating (especially given the short notice). Jacob arrived on my birthday ready to cook us a wonderful 4-course Mediterranean meal.
