I absolutely adore this place! Aside from a Petco or Petsmart I don't think I've ever really been in a reptile store and I got to tell you, every time I visit to pick up rats for my snakes, UGG. I love it! I feel like once in awhile they change their layout but the most RECENT change up? Amazing! Please don't change it. My favorite are the giant snakes (that used to be in the back and harder to see) but now I can see them up front and center! They are huge! I came a few weeks ago when one of the staff members were handling the green tree python and ugg so beautiful in person (I watch a lot of snake videos on YT). Anyways, I'm getting carried away, I initially wanted to leave a review for my actual purchase of F/T rats and mice. I still remember the first time I came in and I asked for some mice... the sweet girl goes to the back and brings me a LIVE MOUSE! I'm like "ooooh no no no, I need frozen please!" Haha! Ever since then, I make sure to clarify I need frozen. My hognose is a great eater and never had any issues and before I found this place, I had to order in bulk like 50-100... and it was not cheap nor did I have the space. When I got my ball python, there was no way I was going to be ordering 50+ rats and you know how they can be... when I first got him he ate 2 times and decided to go on a hunger strike for 6 months... good thing I didn't have 48 more rats in my freezer lol! Both my snakes eat great which means they really take care of their rodents and I have been a happy customer for the past 1.5ish years? Even though the chameleon is a more complicated creature to care for, Nina taught us everything we needed to know to be successful with our new pet, and has continued to answer any questions that have arisen. Also, unlike at the big chain stores, Hewitt breeds their own chameleons and they know what they're doing. If you buy a reptile from Petco or Petsmart, you're likely to get one that has been bred from poor stock, has been improperly cared for, and is unhealthy. I would strongly recommend Hewitt Reptile Emporium to anyone who has any reptile. Their staff is very knowledgeable about the reptiles they have on hand. Also they give great suggestions when having trouble with your pet or just need suggestions to help improve their home life. I was very happy to learn that they did boarding for when you have to be out of town and don't want to worry about someone making a trip out each day to take care of your pet. I had to be out of town for two months and I was able to board my bearded dragon Brisingr there. I was so impressed with the level of care he received, if I ever needed to board him again this is the first place I would call. The store has a wonderful selection of all kinds of items, and reptiles. The young woman helping me was VERY helpful and knowledgeable. Unfortunately, I just KNEW I should have checked my container of isopods, before leaving. 1 hr drive home, to find only 3 isopods in the container. Also, the staff does not have access to the store email account. The web page clearly at the top, offers a phone # and an email. I have emailed 2x, and still not received a reply. I was pretty shocked sat the pricing on the 'Cleanup crew' Isopods and Springtails cost $47.00 When I purchase from my usual guy, they are about $25 total. And he doesn't come through with only 3. read more

I cannot say enough amazing things about every single one of the ladies at this store. As a new snake owner, I have had some concerns over the last almost two years and this store has been there for me and my snake babies and have gone above and beyond for me more than any retail customer service store would ever go! Some could choose to go somewhere closer or cheaper, but I choose to go here for the connection and the relationship and the bond I built and trust knowing they actually care about me and knowing I'm not just another dollar sign walking through the doors. There was a time I was concerned one of my snakes may be overweight and I just wanted them to take a look at her. Another time I thought one may have had mites (he didn't), Nina and Bella were so helpful looking over my snake and helping me to figure out how to take care of them if they did. Then that same snake decided to go on a hunger strike for a month. He was already stunted from the previous family that surrendered him, so I was very concerned. I called every week after a failed attempt to feed a frozen thawed rat. Mell had been successful feeding my snake when he had been surrendered, so I trusted her. I spoke to Mell for advice like she was my own personal vet. She gave me tricks and tips to try to get him to feed and I did everything to no avail. I ended up bringing him back in and was very emotional and scared for my snake's health and Nina took the time to calm me and made sure I did not leave until my snake ate. We found out he wanted live and not frozen. Nina got him to eat twice and from then on he's been good. I have never felt like a burden or a bother no matter how often I called or came by. These ladies: Bella, Anna, Mell and Nina are amazing, and I can't imagine the store being what it is without them! Their knowledge, their kindness, their patience it's a god send! read more

It came time to add a new member to our family. We researched and decided on an albino leucistic leopard gecko. In Washington unfortunately there's not a lot of purchase options if you don't go with the large chain stores (Petco/Petsmart) so we made our 50 minute trek to Hewitt Reptile eager and with questions. Unfortunately, we were met with a bit of abrasiveness and our questions were answered with shortness and sarcasm. This is after calling twice on what to bring to get started. When you drop nearly $200 in a store you should be a bit more patient welcoming new reptile owners. Two weeks later my other daughter while in the Everett area went in to grab some crickets and was met with abrupt rudeness. I don't like making the accusations that these interactions were based on race, the only thing in common both times were we were immediately treated this way and were the only black customers. I really appreciate Hewitt reptile for the services they provide that I come here uniquely for. First, I live in West Seattle but will drive here to house my beardy while on vacation. They treat her very well and I love that they will house her in a tank with her name so others can come in enjoy as I love seeing the other vacationing animals. No other place near me offers the services or level of care from my experience. They also offer nail trimming services and while my dragon is in love with me, she gets fussy when I try to clip her nails so it's nice to have an option in case I want to skip the hassle. Last time I housed her, it was 15 dollars a day which I do not mind as it is peace of mind to know she is cared for. I rarely bug food here as I get it a little cheaper online through a mailing service, but it's nice to have the variety in case I want something other than super worms. Staff is friendly as well and easily to schedule a stay over the phone though I would like to see an online booking option though not a big deal. read more

My husband unexpectedly got orders for us to go out of country and we reached out to the owners about returning a bearded dragon we had purchased about 2 days ago not knowing this information. We were told all animal sales are final when we called but weren't told that at the time of purchase? The owner offered $45 after we spent $200 on the reptile. I feel like that is kind of disrespectful and to just gain even more profit? I guess we'll just try to find someone who's willing to properly care for the animal and attempt to get majority of our money back. Definitely lacks customer service and if that's your policy, your employees should definitely disclose that information. I am very interested in getting a snake. I wanted to go to a reptile specific place where people were knowledgeable on reptiles. I received exactly what I came for and more. I had tons of questions and was welcomed with enthusiasm and great customer service. Sara and Amanda were so kind. They gave me a lot of great tips and pointed me in the right direction. To be honest I wasnt too impressed the first time I was there. Staff were not the most welcoming however it was the weekend and they were rather busy with only one staff member to help customers. I've been here a number of times. Either to find things for my Beardie or my Tegu. Sometimes just to window shop. The owner has a great variety of reptiles and all of them look very healthy. The cages are kept clean and fresh. They take the time to answer any questions/concerns. And are very adept at educating their clientele. Whether it be for an animal you got from them or not. The engine firewall & surrounding wires of my Mazda 3 were recently chewed up by rats who not only made a huge mess but also had babies under the hood while I was away on holiday. After getting the car fixed (which was not cheap), I read up on ways to keep the rodents out. Someone on a forum mentioned snake poop being a deterrent, it being the poop of a natural predator & all. So, I called Hewitt Reptile Emporium & was answered by a lady who was very helpful & even offered to bring me the poop of her personal pet boa. When I did go there I was met by a man who seemed just as helpful & kind. I now have a small bag of flamin snake sh*t to call my own & plan to put it in a perforated plastic box & leave in under the front of my car so every passing critter can get a good whiff. The emporium had some very pretty snakes & turtles. They even had a week-wise labelled system of boxes full of chirping crickets (larvae to adults) to feed the reptiles. TIP: when you are away on holiday, park your car in a garage, if you can. Also, if you've come back from driving late at night, leave your car's hood open for a few minutes so that it can cool down faster (even more important on cooler nights). It is the warm engine that attracts rodents, who just want to snuggle up next to it. And then eat it for lunch. read more

I stopped at Hewitt Reptile because my daughter wanted a bearded dragon and I wanted to support local businesses. We spent almost $300 on the bearded dragon and supplies. When we got home, we realized we received an extra fluorescent bulb and went back to return it 3 days later. The employees refused to take it back and told me to come back when a manager was present. Completely upset that a small business where I spent so much money was not willing to take back a bulb they told me I needed and didn't. I am never going back there and they lost repeat business because I was going to be spending $40-50 per week on bugs and worms for my bearded dragon. read more

I've been into this store a few times and have been disgusted each time. All animals have a smell, sure, but this place reeks. The store itself is unclean and the husbandry for most of the animals is mediocre at best. Several of the animals are skinny (more so than just being young), and very clearly in poor health. I haven't had a single decent experience with the owner, she's been sassy and rude (when she's not completely ignoring you) and spreading incorrect husbandry and care information for the animals I've inquired about. I came in once to buy feeder rats, I didn't want frozen so I had asked if prekill was an option. The employee I had asked was overly... enthusiastic about hand-killing the rats and made it an entirely uncomfortable experience. I got home and one of the rats was bloody, I mean blood splattered all over the container.. it should not be a violent death. All of these instances have proved to me that this store is not worth doing business at, regardless how much I'd love to support small businesses. The only redeeming quality is the selection of animals, which understandably makes the store seem cool and interesting if you didn't know any better. I highly recommend Nova Reptiles in Marysville for a wonderful experience, not to mention, the animals are properly cared for and won't die upon bringing them home. read more

I love this place! They have the cutest tegu lizard as a store pet, and they have a huge selection of enclosures. It's a bummer I wasn't able to find the Exo Terra Habisphere here, but that's super hard to find nowadays so it's not something I can hold against them.
