Old fashioned
Jeremy S.

Great atmosphere and some nice cocktail creations. I had the old fashioned, it's made from Knob creek house Barreled from a private selection for Hewing hotel. The cheese curds were ok, the salami was the best thing, cheese curds were lacking. Fries had a nice seasoning on them and the aioli was really good, it was a dill aioli. Staff was really helpful!!! Tip well!!!!

Lew and my Mezcal Old Fashioned.

Returned to the Hewing Bar & Lounge on our current trip to Minneapolis. It is a fantastic bar, well worth the expense. Josh was my mixologist on this visit, and he is truly a chemist, listening to my request to a Mezcal forward Old Fashioned. It was wonderful. Hewing is one of the best bars in Minneapolis. Ignore that it's a hotel bar because the Hewing is a Minneapolis one off.

Espresso Martini

The chairs are comfortable and it doesn't seem like a hotel bar. They have a unique drink/bar menu and decent prices for the location! The bartender, Merlin, was friendly and talkative. Love the Hewing for a quick stop or more!

Wow, this place was cool!…read more The entry is pretty hidden and parking requires a bit of work unless you do valet. We went on a Saturday night, so we had to wait a bit in order to be seated. However, it was worth the wait for us. There is a dark moody vibe and while my group went in for drinks, there are also options for food. The place itself is pretty loud - both with music and talking, so maybe not the best location for a first date. The drinks are expensive, but the experience was worthwhile for us. I enjoyed the meditteránea. I'll very likely be back! What a neat spot.

Fortunately, I arrived at 5:30 PM on a Saturday, which was early enough to avoid a line and a velvet rope. I don't wait in line for anything unless I'm at a pharmacy, bakery, post office, or airport. Lines at restaurants and bars strike me as pretentious or bad management, and I don't tolerate either. However, I'm old, and at my age, nothing is worth waiting for unless it's a necessity. I found a seat at the beautiful and expansive bar and looked around at the Del Prado design. The colors might be different, but Flora was reminiscent of Minari and Noma. All three add to the Twin Cities' cachet. However, I was taken aback by the attire I saw around me. People were dressed in shorts, T-shirts, and sneakers. It's friggen Saturday night Minneapolis. Have some class! Flora Room was a lovely cocktail lounge, perfect for wooing, but don't expect to strike up a conversation with any of the bartenders. At these Del Prado joints, the staff must be trained not to engage. I'm out alone and enjoy talking. Bartenders used to be part of a lounge's attraction when I grew up in NYC. They learned your name, knew what you did, and gave you a hearty welcome. That, I guess, is not part of the culture in Minneapolis. Well, at least not at the Del Prado restaurants and bars. Chef Del Prado is from Argentina, and certainly, Argentina is one of the warmest and friendliest countries in the world, so I don't get it. I now live up the block from the Flora Room. I'm a neighbor and would like to be treated like one. Neighborly and the Flora Room are distant concepts.

Lounge wraps around the entire floor with lots of little rooms, nooks, and spaces for privacy. Great for a date night. Elevator opens up right at the bar. Not a large bar, but busy. Bartender makes some great concoctions and is a true mixologist. Dirty martini with blue cheese olives was the choice of poison tonight. Hit the spot. Wasn't that hungry but needed something in the belly. Bartender recommended the chicken sliders with a side of fries. She didn't steer me wrong. The order comes with two sliders that are more the size of a sandwich than a slider. Large fried chicken cutlets with a delicious, vinegar based slaw that was delicious. Fries were also excellent. Too much food for appetizers but who's to complain.

Located inside the Foshay Tower, there's street and valet parking available! We entered through the W hotel lobby and took the elevator up to the 27th floor! We were met by a fun, retro-inspired lounge with many couches and tables available in a 360-degree set up. It has Prohibition-themed decor, but I wouldn't quite call it a speakeasy, as there wasn't any guise to entering or accessing the space. My only critique is that the space is quite dated, but not in a cool way. It could really use an update to the paint and interior to maintain itself as a "destination" versus just another hotel bar with a view. The bartenders were quite friendly and helpful during our visit. We had an Old Fashioned and a Paper Plane during our visit! Both cocktails were absolutely delicious and perfectly made. Now, at around $26 each, I would expect that level. Overall, a cool, historical spot to grab a drink!

Upon entering we were greeted by a woman who was clearly wearing multiple hats as she seemed rushed, a bit off putting and quite frankly distracted. It was Juneteenth the middle of the afternoon and there were maybe 6 people at the bar and one other table besides ours with 2 diners. The person seating us was also our server and the bartender. Menu is small but the items we ordered were all fabulous! Every single one! The collard green dip with cornbread pita chips was absolutely delicious - Think spinach artichoke dip but soul food! The salmon croquettes with lemon herb aioli and arugula salad that accompanied were fresh and light! The catfish sandwich with fries was hot, crispy and well seasoned with fresh lettuce and tomato on a perfectly tender brioche bun. I want to return so bad for the food but it was clear this host, server, bartender and partial cook was pulled in too many directions and that severely compromised our service and gave us stand off energy as first time patrons. I looked it up and she is actually one of the owners. She came across as irritated especially once we didn't order any alcoholic drinks first and then very short and curt following. What took the cake was her telling us she was leaving for the day and needed to close our tab while we were eating. Didn't ask did we want to order anything else and there was another server taking her place and an empty restaurant! My partner had to put his sandwich down wipe his hands pull out his wallet while she stood there impatiently. Then proceeded to linger around hugging her regular bar patrons. It was clear this is a "regulars" spot and if you're not one you're rolling the dice on the service you may or may not get. We were patient and didn't complain because it was Juneteenth and our intention to support black restaurants all weekend. I have many previous years in the industry as a cook, host and GM and I was stunned to know that she was one of the owners when I looked it up. Had planned to return for live music but unfortunately the off putting energy and unwelcoming vibe may have squashed that possibility. I hope they improve service because the food is delicious and deserves attention from a larger and more sophisticated audience.

I used to live in Atlanta, currently live in Austin, and have experienced nightlife in Nashville/Savannah/Miami. Thus, my expectations were sky high. Based on my research it appears the Twin Cities have limited options compared to the above 5 cities. And promising options like "Fool Me Once" were listed as already closed. There was a short line outside & it was chilly so I couldn't wait to be let in. There was no cover which usually means expensive drinks and that's exactly the case ($13-$14 per shot). The main floor was quite empty when we arrived around 11:30pm so I made a beeline for the basement hidden behind the bar, which I didn't see until I posed for my neon sign photo. Downstairs there is another bar to the right when you are at the foot of the stairs, and the famous disco room is to your left. We went on Saturday night and it was packed to the brim! I moseyed my way up to the DJ booth but it was annoying having to jostle the vacant & occupied VIP tables. My friend and I danced a little but left within an hour because it was so stuffy. But you know, that reminded me of a similar basement at Dark Horse Tavern in Atlanta where I used to go almost every weekend.

The W was one of the host hotels for the official Prince Celebration 2022 festivities and the official welcome party was held at The Living Room. As to be expected, this party resulted in lots of people who came to dance, drink and to celebrate the 'Purple Yoda from Minnesota'. Surprisingly, this space was an excellent option for the party it has a dance floor area along with a large well-stocked bar which easily accommodated everyone's drink choice. Add to that, they had a few Purple drink specials for the night which were tasty. The bartenders did a great job in processing the nonstop drink orders and the servers were kept very busy throughout the night. When not used for parties, the ambiance is much more laid-back. As the name says, it has more of a 'living room' feel. In addition to the long bar, there are many sections of lounge seating (chars, couches, etc.) which are perfect for unwinding. Even after the party, the bar continued to be well-stocked; so well-stocked that a friend and I made a couple of discoveries while sipping one afternoon. To our surprise, they had a bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle (10 year) along with a bottle of Weller Single Barrel. It's rare to find either at a bar; having both made for an amazing find. My friend and I quickly made it our mission to empty both bottles so we would each have a souvenir from The Living Room (we succeeded). Following the welcome party, the bartenders could have been a bit tired but that was far from the case, they were as energetic and welcoming as they were at the party. If interested in food to go with your adult beverage, they work directly with Manny's Steakhouse (also attached to The W) which means anything from appetizers to a complete steak dinner can be ordered and enjoyed while in The Living Room. On future trips, whether staying at The W or not, I will make a point to stop by The Living Room for an adult beverage or two.

New, shiny and very classy cool place to drink cocktails, have fun and dance…read more It opened a few weeks back and I really wanted to check this place out. Went out with many of my friends together and it may have become our favorite spot. 1. Decor Absolutely love the fact they have such high ceilings, thanks to the old library building, super high back leather chairs and overall classy sophisticated design makes this place really cool. 2. Drinks They serve a few signature cocktails and I liked all of them. They don't serve food here. 3. Dance You could technically dance anywhere. There's no dedicated dance floor. 4. Music They have DJs both inside and outside (patio) and good. 5. Patio It consists of 2 sections. Downstairs where you can hear each other better and large group setting tables or upstairs where you can sit or dance. 6. Hookah lounge Okay, I never did this so I didn't try it. But could see people who like hookah, enjoying it. It's also my first time seeing such thing as hookah lounge inside a bar/lounge. It is probably the best in the Twin Cities. The DJ area was in the middle but kinda tucked away and hidden behind the super XXL sofas and chairs in this place, so you won't see them in the dark lights. I don't know if it's good or bad, but I like watching the DJ in action sometimes when I go out dancing. She was playing some good dance music. Before you head to Mansion, you have to come with an open mind and lots of forgiveness in your heart. Drink a lot or take a chill pill before you come because this place has lots of rules. The night we were here, there were more security guards and "hostess" sweeping the floor than regular customers. I call them hostess, but I don't really know what they do other than stand around looking gorgeous and smiling. They didn't greet us when we came in or take our drink orders throughout the night so I don't really know what they do. I heard there is dress code for the men so make sure you have collared shirt and long pants on. As for the ladies, you don't have to remind us to dress to kill for a night out. The is no cover charge so that's pretty awesome since we are sure to be drinking inside anyway. However, their policies for not allowing jackets laying around doesn't make for a fun time. I have never been to a club where they force you to either wear your darn jacket or pay for coat check service and only if you can find it due to poor signage. Firstly, I was told to remove my jacket from laying it on the arm rest of a couch that was supposedly reserved for an invisible party because no one showed up. Secondly, they tell me I can't put my jacket on the bar stool when we finally found some kind souls to share their limited bar seating area with us!! Really!!!!!!!!!?????? Mansion?????? My last encounter with Mansion's rules (whew this one tops the icing on the cake), I put down my empty champagne glass on a nearby table because we were having so much fun dancing that I didn't want to risk breaking a glass on the dance floor only to be told I have to put my glass at the bar! In short, he is telling me "bus your own empty glass, lady!" I asked him if he could take the glass away for me only to be refused because he is too good to do just that (provide good customer service) because he has a black suit on and an ear piece. I am a paying customer Mansion!!!??? Some advise for Mansion- let loose on your rules! There are not enough tables to put down our darn drinks so we can dance hands free! Instead, you have too many Reserved couches on the nights when your joint was half empty.
