I took the bus from the airport and was relieved to find out; Hey this bus dropped me off at a major train station (Station Bijlmer ArenA). Little did I know that station was my one-way train ticket to downtown. Not far from the station is the Holiday Inn Express - Arena Towers. I had to walk about a quarter mile from the station to the Holiday Inn Express. Along the way, I was surprised to even notice the Amsterdam ArenA. Hence the reason for distinguishing "Arena Towers" in their name. Plus the hotel is made up of both a regular Holiday Inn, and an Express type. I checked-in with Romy who was super welcoming! She verified my IHG membership, and made sure I was taken care of. And apparently the only room available for me was on the top level (the 17th). Sweet! Not only did she hook up a nice room, she helped me with planning my trip to Centraal Station. She explained the layout of their hotel, and the complimentary breakfast from 6:30am to 10:30am. I even got hooked up with a plug converter, only requiring a small deposit. The room ran me $348.35 or €308.23 for one night. Yes, pricey but every hotel downtown was booked since it was a bank holiday Monday. The room in general was average looking; Clean in my opinion though. Loved the blue light in the bathroom, as well as the standup shower with detachable showerhead. In the open, next to the bed was a set of hangers, a monitor for cable, and a bed. WiFi worked without a hitch. The bed was slightly firm and the beddings were nice and white. The view of the land, excellent! So overall, I enjoyed my short stay here and wouldn't mind staying again. The hotel was simply convenient being next to the station, the arena, and various food joints. The staff was on-point with everything, and I finally got some much needed rest. It's the reason we stay right, for sleep and rest? It's rare for me to give five stars to a corporate company, but service overshadowed the average stay. I'd never thought I'd say this, but "Thank you" Holiday Inn Express for the warm hospitality.

Look, I really don't want to knock this place but if it is location that you are looking for then…read morethis is definitely not the place to stay in Amsterdam. The only reason we ended up here was because there happened to be a huge festival on in Amsterdam and the prices of the hotels in the city centre were absolutely ridiculous. In fact this was the cheapest place that we could find. The problem is that it is a 5 to 10 minute walk to the train station, and then a 20 minute ride on the metro. Okay, if you are looking for cut price accomodation then it isn't bad, but you need to remember that there is nothing, nothing at all, within a short walk from this hotel, except for the railway station. In fact there isn't even a place you can get food, unless of course you go to the bar, and the beers there are reasonably priced so that isn't all that bad. Still, if you want to be where everything is happening, then this is probably not a hotel to go to. Oh, and some of the staff can be a little snooty as well.

We get here and check in, which was painless and enter our rooms. The outside of the rooms were extremely stuffy and smoky, even though I had read that the hotel was smoke free. After checking in, we go to the front desk to ask how to get to the train station, and the receptionist gave us really hard to decipher directions, but we ended up finding it eventually. BASCICALLY, just cross the street and go STRAIGHT following the bike path. Eventually you'll get there. It really is just a 5-10 minute walk from the metro. Which is fantastic, and ends up being just a 20-30 minute ride to get to Centraal station. The rooms were minimalist (in a good way, they felt clean, spacious and modern). The restaurant on location was also decently priced compared to the restaurants in Amsterdam. I loved the location, it was quaint with a lovely lake in the background for the pup to play in when we got home from sight seeing. All in all, this will probably be where I stay again. Even if i I don't bring the dogs. As much as I love the center of Amsterdam, it was nice to get out of it when it was time to relax for the day. The onsite parking also made me feel much more secure and saved us a bundle over trying to park in the city.

I booked two rooms as we were 3 adults and 2 children. Unfortunately, no interconnecting rooms were available so we have been allocated two rooms next to each other. They were contemporary, clean and reasonably sized. The bathroom is enveloped by a glass wall separating it from the room, so unless the guests are related then it might be an embarrassment. There is an LED display outside the room to indicate if the room is occupied and if the guest wishes not to be disturbed or requesting room makeup. A breakfast was offered in the morning but it was limited in its selection. Just an observation: I noticed that the staff were cold and less engaging with the guests especially at the front desk. I understand that it is part of the local culture there. But a hotel in a business area hosting international guests should overcome this cultural obstacle. The hotel is in a business/corporate area with lots of multinational companies. It benefits from its proximity from the metro station with direct access to the center of Amsterdam. However when I returned late at night from Amsterdam city centre I had to take 2 buses to reach the hotel within 1 hour. I recommend this hotel if you are a business travel with job to do in the area or if you are looking for a cheaper option for staying in Amsterdam.
