My family was involved in a car accident and they went to the hospital the car was not drivable and totaled state farm told us to go to hertz Rent-A-Car . I had rent a car insurance on my policy for $25 a day they gave me a small compact car they told me that State Farm would cover everything and they asked me if I wanted their insurance I said as long as Statefarm was paying for it and it did not go over $25 a day that's fine I never rented a car before and ask them what they thought the guy never said that insurance policy was an additional $19 a day and State Farm would not pay for it we had the car for two weeks so when I drop the car off they told me that I owe them $383 so I told them that is not right they would not refund the money and I started getting upset and send a couple bad words and he told me to leave so I got taken by a employee at Hertz rent a car in warren I talked to state farm about it and they call that hertz would not do anything about it they said that they would take off 250 bucks which means I still owe them $133 so watch out if this happens to you it is a scam and I hope somebody can do something about it read more

We recently visited island of Maui and a dear friend rented a car with Hertz Car Rental. Boy did we have a LONG FLIGHT I would like to say the shuttle was really busy but very clean! Very helpful and not rude at all. We reached in the office and it was late I must say we were greeted by a nice young lady whom I remember by name fairly well her name I believe was Antoinette she gave us SERVICE I know it was late and she had appear to be slight weary (I do not blame her our plane was LATE! (NEXT REVIEW) Any toodle she helped us so dearly with a smile on her face and she answered all of our 20 million questions and gave us EXCELLENT directions in the dark mind you! HERTZ RENTALS I HOPE YOU RECOGNIZE MISS ANTOINETTE there in kahalui maui for doing a wonderful job. She got us in our car in less than 5 minutes and I have to mention the hertz car we had was nice and tidy no nicks or scratches and the area was clean and the price was good. We did have a pricey hold on our card but well worth it. We enjoyed our say in September 2011! I do hope to get to meet her again on our next trip to MAUI. read more

Efficient service! Quick check-in, check-out. I reserved a compact car; however, they were still in the process of cleaning the car, so the lady who helped me upgraded me to a full size car to save me time. I didn't need such a large car, but definitely appreciated her considerate service. read more

"This was my first experience as a gold member and I appreciated the ability to change to a minivan. Very helpful."

I read the complaints below and am very surprised. I have been renting from them for many years as does my wife. I am canadian and have a getaway condo in Maui. We always arrive late around 11:00pm and the service has always been very good. Helpful at times when asked. Over the years I have had a few problems but always rectified with aloha spirit. Maybe its the time of day. I don't know. I do know after a long flight, getting their luggage, getting a shuttle then seeing a line up makes them grumpy. Relax, its Maui. Getting to your vacation place for a holiday whether it takes a extra hour or so its not going to spoil your trip. Negativity can spread to the rest of the family. Who wants that to start off. Grumpy Dad, Grumpy Mom. Hertz has the best quality cars in Maui. Thats important to me. I'm going June 05th and renting a corvette. I'll wait for ever for that. Cowboy Gary Smith. read more

We wanted to express our sincere thanks to everyone at OGG airport for the wonderful service (and local recommendations) experienced during a convertible rental in AUG 2014. When a warning light came on in our convertible, the shop took great care to help us identify the problem. We received an exchange vehicle without any discussion. Perhaps we hit the rental area at a slow time, but check-in and check-out were also a breeze. And, the shuttle driver was entertainment on wheels :) Thank you, Hertz Maui! read more

My wife and I arrived in Maui for the first day of our honeymoon. We had reserved a car for a 12:30 pick up. When we arrived at the hertz rental building, it definitely felt unairconditioned and it was chaotic. WE WAITED A TOTAL OF TWO FULL HOURS TO GET A CAR! To get the car, we had to go through three different steps, each with a wait. You would think the first main line was to get the car keys especially since we had already made a reservation. But the first line, which was incredibly long and slow, was merely to get your name on a list. Then there was another long wait and period of standing. I finally inquired on the status of our car and he was told that we had not been assigned a car yet. Finally our name was called and we were told our car would soon be here. So we then began our third period of waiting. We spotted our assigned car still in the car wash. We finally left with our car at 2:34. This is UNACCEPTABLE considering the fact that we had days before made a 12:30 reservation. Families with babies and young children had been waiting two hours or more. Everyone in the building was sweaty, smelly, hungry, stressed, and upset. Hertz needs to fix this! One of the rental "agent" told us that they had been backed up for four days. We are going to call customer service to see if we can get compensation. We encourage everyone to do the same and pressure Hertz to do a better job! read more

In and Out was a breeze, Every thing so much better than any other rental place. Would recommend to everyone.! Thanks for a great and good experience in car rental. read more

Have been a Gold member and rented cars in Hawaii many times through the years. Most recently, on Maui in June of this year. My last experience of renting on Maui has me questioning the integrity of this particular Hertz outlet. I am planning not to use Hertz on Maui for a couple of years. read more

My flight arrived late in the evening and after a long day of travel it was nice as I deplaned to receive a text telling me which space my car was in. Pick-up/drive out was quick and I was on my way to the hotel. The midsize Altima was perfect for my needs for the week. It was clean and didn't have the typical rental smell. Return was just as easy. Great experience. Mahalo. read more

Worst experience of my life. Had to wait 10-15 minutes for shuttle, driver very rude. Waited over 2 hours on vehicles - we had 2 reservations. Rented 2 full-size cars and got Tiny Kia Optima. Will NEVER rent from Hertz again. What a freaking disaster. People stacked everywhere waiting on cars. Go ANYWHERE else! read more

My apologies to everyone who has to experience this Hertz rental car office as their first Maui experience. I swear I was upsold so many times in a five minute span that I thought my head was going to explode from trying to figure out how much more they wanted me to spend. Between upgrading to a Jeep or convertible ("oh, there is a GREAT deal for you...") to the 4-5 different insurance options to the full tank of gas option (which by the way isn't cheaper--gas is pretty much the same price in the outside world and you don't have to purchase an entire tank regardless of how much you actually use.) I know it's their job to try to get more money out of people, but at least try to be tactful about it. To make matters worse, this person couldn't give directions for their life. Our directions to Wailea at 8pm at night were "two rights, and a left and you'll be there!" No such luck. She was either mad at me for not taking any of her upsell attempts. Or bad at giving directions. Or both. Probably both. read more

Absolutely horrible! Zero stars if possible. Waited forever for shuttle. Shuttle driver sat on his butt & didn't help anyone with their luggage. I'm a "Gold" customer. My name was not on "Gold" board for quick pick up as promised. I have been standing in the "Gold" line for 40 minutes with other angry "Gold" customers for the single customer representative to help me while my wife waits outside in hot weather with our luggage. There are still 7 people ahead of me & the customer representative is taking his time with each of them. What a nightmare! Just found out I won't get the Chevy Malibu I was supposed to get & in fact this location never had any Chevy Malibu's despite offering them. Hertz's "or similar" hedge language implies it has Malibu's at this location but if they are out despite promising one you will get a similar car. Here, they never had a Malibu in the first place. I was also told it would take at least a half hour to get my car (giving me time to add this update). Hertz broke its promises in a classic bait & switch as to both product & service. I was supposed to show up with a Chevy Malibu waiting & all I had to was to walk over to it & drive off. What a disappointing joke. It was close to 3 hours before I got my car which was parked at an out of the way place & I was never notified it was finally available. I finally went back inside & asked where it was & the counter person said it should be out there somewhere & helped me find it. He told me to drive it to the gate to check out. There was no inspection or other formalities & I discovered a few scratches on the rear passenger side when I got to my hotel. I WILL NEVER RENT A CAR FROM THIS HERTZ LOCATION AGAIN. read more

When I picked up the car they tried to put me in a smaller car than I paid for (Mid size SUV) because they didn't have any Midsize SUVs ready. I asked if they could put me in a jeep since I saw a few in their parking lot, but they told me they needed managers approval but the manager wasn't there. So we waited over an hour for a different SUV. The following day I had to return the car because the warning lights came on because of bad tires. So I had to spend another 2 hours on returning the car and waiting for another. And still saw the jeeps in the lot and they still would not give us one. The next day I saw my turn in time was 11 am when I requested late check in since my flight was a red eye. I called for over an hour to fix the late check in and kept getting sent to voicemail so I left a message and never received a callback. I tried calling about an hour or so later and again was sent to voicemail. The day after I called a different number provided by another disappointed customer on yelp and finally spoke to someone who said they would put it in my rental notes to waive the late check in fee and I should have no problem when I returned the car late. When I finally returned the car I was greeting by a nice lady on the counter who I explained the situation to and was ready to help. Then an annoyed looking man who I'm guessing was the manager walked over stood over the woman and asked what was going on. I told him about the late check in and the whole situation. He said that the time I pick up the car was the time I had to drop it off and they charge extra for turning the cars in late. I told him I had to wait to get a car and had to take timeout of my vacation to return the bad car they gave me. He looked annoyed and dismissed the inconveniences I went through and told me again the time I check out the rental is the same time I have to return it. Luckily the female receptionist processed the paperwork and told me I was not getting charged so I told her thank you and went on my way. read more

Don't rent from Hertz in Maui! I really wish I had read the reviews beforehand. To start with, it took over two hours to get our car. I understand there are sometimes long waits for rentals, but they need to change their way of operating here. Multiple buses came to the airport pickup for every other rental company while we stood there and waited for the one Hertz bus that finally come. When I got to the counter, the lady would NOT stop pushing upgrades after I said no, kept insisting my existing insurance would not cover an accident (absolutely untrue since I have full coverage plus every extra you can think of that covers every rental situation, AND I have double coverage through my Amex card...needless to say I didn't take their extra coverage!) and then tried to sneak the "prepay" gas option on to the contract without asking or giving me an option. When I questioned the higher amount, she lied and said it was cheaper for them to fill up for me on return, because gas was so expensive around the area. I quickly googled nearby gas prices for that day and they were a full $2.00 cheaper per gallon than their quote. Yeah no, not taking that either. We finally got our car, and it was completely covered with dents, marks and scratches. We actually filmed the car, walking around the entire thing and showing the date and contract in case they tried to scam us when we returned. Never again. Luckily I have a travel blog with large amount of followers...guess what advice I'll be passing along to them! read more

I'll start by saying this was some adventure. I'm here in Maui on vacation and rented a car to explore the island. I rented a midsize vehicle and received a Nissan Altima. Everything was great the first day, I had no issues with the vehicle. The second night once getting back to the resort from the road to Hana ( must explore this road at least once) I parked my vehicle, opened the trunk and saw roaches scatter(large and small). I got my bags out and after getting on the elevator noticed one running around on my bag!!! After killing it and shaking out all of my belongings, (outside of my room of course) I thought it would get better. I drove the car the next day during the day light hours, looking into the trunk prior to the drive and no pest were noted. Tonight I took an evening drive to a restaurant for dinner. While driving home from dinner (at night) my wife starts screaming and attempts to get out of the moving car. It appeared that the roaches had a family reunion in the vehicle. Once I'm able to pull into a gas station I see multiple roaches around the front windshield molding and a few babies/small ones coming out of the vents on the passenger side. I was finally able to calm my wife down and she reluctantly got back into the roach infested vehicle for another 5 mins until we reached the resort. Her left overs from the restaurant were thrown in the trash immediately and we shook out our clothes at the room door. I called hertz immediately and was told the office was closed, but the young lady was nice and set arrangements for the car to be towed and replaced with another tomorrow. I hope all goes well with this tomorrow, but I will definitely keep everyone posted and grade them accordingly on their resolution of this issue. read more

Stay away from this location!! The agent working the day we arrived was rude and extremely passive aggressive. Also worked at a very snail like pace. She will try to up sell you on your car, which is fine but the attitude you get after you decline was ridiculous. Hassled me about not paying the remainder of my reservation with the credit card I used to get a discount code. Made me restart the whole process to pay the reservation with that specific credit card. Then told me my significant other needs to be added to reservation but does not mention additional charges. Had to decline that after I realized she was trying to charge extra. This was strange since I was just in Oahu and Enterprise added my spouse for free. Then to top it off she tries to sell the gas fill up, which to be fair is standard practice at all the rental companies, but then she went further saying that if I don't choose this option I have to fill up the tank myself at a gas station less than 5 miles away and I must provide a receipt proving that I got gas at a station less than 5 miles away. I rent a fair amount of cars for business travel and I have never heard of this before. Seriously this lady had terrible customer service and made our Maui vacation start on the wrong foot. Please avoid this location if you can and especially if you're on vacation. You don't want to deal with this nonsense and negativity when you're looking forward to an awesome vacation in Maui. Oh and when I returned the car no one asked about a gas receipt. read more

After reading so many negative reviews I was a little worried about picking up the car. I prepaid for the car through Priceline so I was stuck with it. We picked up our bags and headed over to the rental car company pick up area. The hertz bus was already there loading up people. The bus was completely full - standing room only. I decided to jump off the bus as soon as we arrived at the hertz location to try to beat the crowds and gave my husband wait fir our bags to be unloaded. No need! We got there around 8:45 pm on a Monday night. There was only 1 other person being helped when I got there and 6 counters open. The lady looked up my reservation, asked a few questions and gave us our parking space number. It literally only took about 5 minutes. Our car was parked right outside the door. The car was freshly washed and only had 400 miles on it - VW Jetta. We had to inspect the car ourselves for any damage and mark it on a form. It took awhile since it was dark and we had to us our phones for light. But by the time we we ready to drive off I looked inside and there was only a line of 2 people waiting to be helped. Everyone from our super crowded bus had already been helped and were on their way. I was very happy with hertz - I hope returning the car is just as easy. read more

The total experience was a joke. I normally use National about 5 days a month for business. For some reason my wife booked this trip and went with Hertz at the Maui airport. What a mistake, I will never use Hertz again; they have lost a customer and anyone that within my company for life. It took me 45 min to get to the counter, the lady talked me into getting the full tank (lesson learned, I used about a half of a tank. She was trying to rush the process and added road side assistance and insurance which came to over $200 for the 6 days that I was there. She folded up the contract when she asked me to initial it so I didn't notice that she added it (she did not ask me for either). When I returned the car, I was running late for my flight. I asked the person checking in my car to take of the charge and they said no problem. When I got the bill emailed to me the charge was still on. I tried to call the company and was redirected so many times. They told me that I needed to contact the airport location that I rented the car from to have the charge removed. I called about 5 different times and no one picked up the phone. What a scam, I was told that the individuals renting the cars got commission for upselling, not a good way to do business. I was never able to reach the Maui Airport store to get this fixed so I had to pay for two services that I did not authorize. Because of this extremely poor customer service I will never ever use Hertz again or recommend them to other friends or colleges. Not a very ethical way of doing business. I wish I could have given them a "0" instead of a "1". ". read more

BOOK AT OWN RISK....We had booked and paid for our car over 2 months prior to our holiday, so thought it would be a quick process, check in at the counter get the keys and paradise here we come....how wrong we were. We waited an hour and a half in line to get to a customer service rep. There was the option of using the express on line option, however looking at the people already using it, it just did not look worth the hassle. There were 4 reps at the counter initially then another 3 at the gold membership counter. We thought great this shouldnt be too long ....but then 3 reps disappeared out the back door after serving a few customers then never to be seen again! The gold check in side processed a few customers then sat there doing nothing despite the fact that there were lots waiting in the 'normal' line. FINALLY we get to the check out, declined the extra add ons crap then were told to wait for our car. We hired a mustang convertible which wasn't cheap....STILL waiting an hour later for our car despite people BEHIND us in the queue who ALSO hired a convertible, drove off. We thought WTF so went to the counter AGAIN to see where our car was. They said they were waiting on one.....we were the last ones in the building (even the staff were going home) and at long bloody last we got our dirty car which was smelly inside. It also had 2 large scratches on the back bumper. We got a picture of the car in our documents but there was nothing marked on it. So we took photos just in case on return they decide to fine us for damage we did not do. We have rented cars before and never had such crap service. Will not use them again. What a waste of a day of our holiday. Staff don't give a shit either so no use complaining to them. read more

My booking was done four months in advance. I went on line in advance and filled out the required info to speed the process up and get in the "fast" line. We arrived about noon on September 1st. I was the first out of the bus and went to the fast line with only one person at the counter ahead of me. My Hope was rising for a painless get away. It took 20 minutes to be next in line. We went through the obligatory sales job which creates the log jam and long lines. After saying no many times (I have rented hundreds of cars in my career) we finally got to the point of getting the car I booked and was told none were ready but I could have a bigger car that was available at about double my booked rate. I asked what was the hold up on my original booked vehicle. The answer was the cars were not clean yet. The counter person said it would take 15 minutes go wait over there. After 20 minutes more now nearly an hour after arriving at the lot I had to go through all the steps once again to get the car. On inspection of the car it was clear the car was not cleaned recently. The process took over one hour! This ranks as the worst experience renting a car in 40 years of travel. Hurts needs to send a fix it team here and get this fixed. I am a CEO of a medium sized company and if one of my locations were operating this badly I would go head hunting. read more

This has got to be the worst place ever to rent a car. Upon arriving at the airport and taking their shuttle to their facility I got off the bus to find total chaos there had to be 40 people all waiting to get their cars all with reservations. I was with my son and he suggested that we use one of their kiosks. I spoke with a manager who was out on the floor trying to placate people who were getting unruly. I told this manager that there was a problem with our reservation as my travel agent had made the reservation under my wife's name and not mine but she had notified hertz of the change. This manager told me this would be okay as she would handle any problem that may arise. At first the clerk that appeared at the kiosk refused to do anything but this manager got on the phone with her and told her she was a manager at this location and would approve anything she needed. Our reservation was for a seven passenger vehicle with a child seat and navigation. It took almost three hours for them to complete this rental agreement I was told that a child seat was being installed and the car would be brought up to me. I waited another half hour and still no car. I went back to the desk and asked and was told the car was in a spot we should go get it. I finally found the car it was not a seven passenger as we requested nor did it have navigation. The child car seat was dirty and disgusting and was not installed in the vehicle but throw into the back seat. When I complained to the desk I was told that all they have take it or leave it. So after three and half hours my son and I took the car and went back to the airport to pick up my wife , daughter in law and two young grandsons. We asked them to wait a while longer and I went to the nearest mall and bought a new car seat for my grandson. This car would no hold all of us and our luggage so I retained a Limousine to transport my wife and myself to our hotel along with some of our baggage my son and daughter in law and the kids rode in the car. When we got to the hotel I called my travel agent who in turn got a hold of a supervisor at Hertz and mysteriously the next day they were able to deliver to us the original car we had reserved So after a six hour plane ride and three and a half hours at the rental place and the aggravation of them telling us they did not have the car we ordered and had prepaid for they actually did have the car but because they are so incompetent and non caring no one took the time to actually look at our reservation. PS our limo driver returned their car seat that night after dropping us at our hotel. read more

they charge extra for additional drivers. unless your a gold member you have to wait. everything else about the rental was good.

I was a longstanding Avis customer until United Airlines changed their affiliation to Hertz. I haven't been impressed with Hertz in general, but my experience today was the last straw. I had a reservation when I flew in to Kahalui from Honolulu. It took forever for the shuttle bus to arrive- I waited easily 40 minutes, and there were already people there when I arrived. There were soon about 50 customers waiting, and people started to get irritated. When the bus finally showed up, the driver (named Diana) was already angry and completely unprofessional. She was rude from the second the doors opened. I saw her literally throw peoples' luggage onto the floor and yell at others that the bus was already full and that they should wait for the next one. Previous reviews suggest that this particular Hertz office is chronically understaffed. Frustration is one thing, but Diana was beyond that- full of anger. I can only imagine that she hates her job, but no matter what she has going on in her personal life, she needs to realize that she represents a company. By the time we arrived at the Hertz office, I had already decided that Hertz would not get my money despite my reservation, so I walked down the block to Avis and had a perfectly fine experience. I am done with Hertz, and this particular branch should fire Diana immediately. read more

Can you give less than one star on Yelp?? I did not think it was possible to ruin such a fantastic trip but the good folks at Hertz outside of OGG airport in Kahului, HI did it! I went there on a Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. and waited in line for FOUR hours for a car. In 90 minutes, I had literally made it less than ten feet in line!! After three hours, I was helped by Jen H. who was the only employee that seemed to be working. There were two employees working the general line helping an excess of 100 people. There were 7-8 employees helping the 20+ Gold members. When I did finally get to a real person after three hours, I still had another hour wait for my car to get cleaned and ready. The Toyota Camry that I requested became a Mazda 5 which is basically a small mini-van...for me and my wife! I have never had a worse consumer experience in my life. We rented from Alamo on Kauai and had an outstanding experience. After emailing and calling Hertz, I was sent a basic email that basically told me to consult their website. I would rent from anyone else besides Hertz in Maui. read more

I'I've never written a negative review as I usually feel the issues were one time events or just bad luck. THis is different, I've noticed a steady decline in Hertz service over the past few months. In particular is the lack of maintenance of their cars and poor customer service. THe workers have actually told me they are not taking as good of care of the cars because they are trying to compete with cheaper rental agencies. Today I returned my car the the Hertz Maui location and was charged for a scratch on the passenger side door. THere were various scratches on the car when I got it so I assumed they knew about it, bad assumption. When I asked to speak to the manager- I truly did not cause the scratch- he did not even check out the "damage" himself, rather he just repeated that the responsibility was on me. Now, I rent from Hertz all the time and have lately become accustomed to the poor maintence so I didn't notice the scratch at rental time. I did however notice a number of cars in the lot that had similar marks that they had ready for renters. Beware of the Maui Hertz rental- I will not go back and suggest if you do rent frmo them to take pictures of your vehicle. read more

Do not rent from Hertz. We waited 2 hours to get a car that was reserved well in advance. When we finally get to the front of the line the clerk tells me this was just to start the process. We would still have to wait for a car. What??? When i asked what was going on, she said they were having computer issues. Another person said flights from Phoenix were delayed...again what? We had arrived from Phoenix 2 hours ago. Still another clerk said it is always like this. When we finally got assigned a car....someone else drove away in it. No way were we going to wait again (sorry man that I interrupted) so I walked up to the clerk and explained that I was livid and we needed a car now! She quickly gave us a car that had been sitting up front for the whole time we had been there. The car was filthy and has so many issues but honestly we were so upset-we just left with a car that was not at all worth what we paid. Oh ya--we had an appointment that was missed due to their incompetence! read more

Wow. We arrived at Kahalui on March 17, 2017. We proceeded to get to Hertz for our reserved car. (You have to board a bus with all your luggage, no big deal). Then the fun began. Two hour wait in line to get to counter. (Maui really hot, sweat pouring down face, arms, legs) Finally got to counter while spouse outside in sun guarding our luggage. Hertz employee very nice and said in a few minutes our car would arrive. TWO HOURS later our car arrived, after we had been sitting on a rock outside in the sun. Turns out they had accidentally given our car to someone else. Okay, we finally got a vehicle with a rear view mirror great for fixing makeup but unable to actually provide its job - a rear view. Oh well. The emergency brake was stuck on and we couldn't figure out how to unstick it. It was electronic. That got resolved eventually. We made it to our hotel about 7 miles away and didn't use the car for two days. On our first venture out to go to a Longs drugstore 5 miles away, suddenly engine lights started flashing, a/c stopped working (100 degrees outside), smoke pouring from hood, no oil in engine. We managed to get back to hotel with sweat pouring double time from every pore in our bodies. We fought over the last drops of water in our water bottles. Tried calling Hertz emergency line but the wait time was more than an hour. Once to our hotel I jumped through many hoops to actually reach someone at the counter at Hertz at Kahalui Airport. Got big case of heat exhaustion. Slept all day and drank fluids and had ice packs everywhere. Ruined two days of our vacay. We had car towed away and refused a replacement car (duh). Got a generic "sorry for your experience" email from Hertz. Just sayin.......perhaps in the future when all the new construction related to rental cars is complete - in meantime don't go to Hertz! read more

I have used Hertz for years. Both for personal and for business. I always had trusted them to be fair and they used to give me free upgrades without asking. Oct of '10 we rented a car for a wk's vacation. My wife made the original arrangements and we thought we were all set. After we arrived in Maui, we found the car was going to be too small so I requested a larger auto. They said they could accommodate me and it would add a small amount to my original choice. I asked for clarification and was told that this was going to be the total charge. After returning the car, and returning home, we got our cc statement and they had charged both amounts. The original and the entire price of a rental of the larger auto. I called the Hertz office and was told yes that it was my fault I did not get it right. This was a real case of deceitful price gouging. They promised and I had a witness that this was the total rental price. They hid the fact that I had already paid for the original model and it was nowhere indicated on the rental signature page. A GREAT WAY TO GET RIPPED OFF! read more

Hurray! This was a refreshing change after our experience with Hertz on Kauai (at Lihue airport). It took us less than 30 minutes total to get to our car. At first there was a line of about a dozen people and only 1 clerk and I thought Oh no, it's Lihue all over again. But here they have 3 working kiosks of "virtual clerks" and after a while, a helpful lady from Hertz came over to our line and asked people if they wanted to use the kiosk. I gave it a try and it was pretty simple. There's an agent located somewhere remotely and a videocamera and you pick up the phone and talk to them. Piece of cake. The only problem I had was that the phone was awkward, it took up 1 of your hands (needed about 4 of them, one to hold the phone, two to go through my wallet for my license and credit card, one to hold my luggage) and was hard to hear with occasional noise from the shuttle arriving/leaving. A headset would have been better. Anyway we got our car right away and it was no problem at all. read more

DO NOT USE HERTZ! Warning to Hertz Gold Plus members - at the gate before leaving the facility, be sure to adamantly state that you declined Hertz's supplement insurance policies during the reservation process and that you do not intend to add them. The joy of not having to wait in lines and just pick up the car and go was ruined when my summary of charges included almost $800 worth of insurance which was added without consent. Hertz says that they can't do anything since they said I added it at the counter despite never visiting the counter. Even though you have the service of not going to the counter, it might be wise to wait in the line to make sure you are not overcharged. I wish now I spent the extra 20 minutes in line making sure or that I just rented from one of the less expensive rental agencies.I keep calling Hertz to right this wrong and they are being anything but helpful. I warn you to rent from someone else if you don't want almost a thousand dollars of secret charges. read more

We booked our car rental through one of those 'name your own price' websites and ended up with a Standard class of vehicle at Hertz. It said it would fit 5 people and 2 large/2 small luggages. We thought this would be fine for the four of us. We got to the Hertz office at about 10:30pm and the agent told us that we would be receiving a 2-door vehicle. Apparently the standard size can be a two or four door. In my opinion, a 2-door should be considered compact. She told us we'd have to pay an extra $70 to upgrade to a full-size. But the price is exactly the same on the website for the standard and full-size. Such a scam. After paying, the agent gave us vague directions to the car and locked the office doors behind us and turned off the lights. We ended up wandering around the poorly lit lot at night, trying to find our car, with no one around to help us. We finally got to our car and realized the agent didn't give us the form to note any damage on the car. One woman walked by but wouldn't stop to help us. She yelled instructions at us and we finally just drove to the booth where an impatient agent was waiting. She asked for our damage form (which we never received) and seemed put out by the fact that it wasn't filled out already. How are we supposed to fill out something we never got? If I can help it, I'll never rent from Hertz Maui again. Terrible service. read more

I have always been pleased with Hertz and how well they handle the rental process. Our experience in Maui was no different. The staff was very polite and willing to listen and the car they gave us was what we had expected and pre-ordered. The only problem we had this time however, was the unexpected extra fee we would have to pay as a spouse. One of the things we have always liked about Hertz is the fact that a spouse is included as a driver with no extra fee. However, in this case, we were told that since we had pre-paid for the rental (meaning we owed for the remaining amount on pick-up but were given a discount for pre-paying), this meant the spouse (me) would have to pay a daily rate of $31/day in order for a spouse to drive the car as well as the husband! When I explained we had pre-paid and used the Hertz website as we usually do and could not understand why this fee was being imposed ($31/day!), the agent said that was the Hertz policy when you pre-pay. I thought by pre-paying we were the ones taking the risk of losing the amount if we cancelled so we could not understand why we were being penalized for pre-paying! It doesn't state that anywhere on the website. That was quite a shock and am hoping Hertz will look at this and clarify. In any case, the agent referred us to a supervisor who said she would make an exception in this one case. We just hope we can continue to rent from Hertz as we have always been very satisfied with the service (which we would normally give Hertz 5 stars except in this case we were greatly disappointed by the policy. read more
