****UPDATE*** Below is the reply that I received after I sent an actual email to Hertz per their request after my Yelp review. I find their email response rather lackluster. Bottom line: DO NOT USE HERTZ, CUSTOMER SERVICE DOES NOT MATTER TO THEM. Hi Seth, Thank you for taking the time to report this incident to us. We apologize for the inconvenience and the wait times you experienced at the Kahului Airport in Maui. We want to assure you that this is not the experience we want any of our customers to have. We apologize that this attendant insisted on the upgrade, and we will be sure to look into this deeper. Best regards, Shervin read more

Place to go if you want to wait an hour to get the car you made reservations for while watching Hertz Gold members and Pleasant Holiday reservations get helped before you. Waited in line for an hour to be helped. Then, despite having reservations and waiting in line an hour, waited another 30 minutes for the actual car. Stay away. read more

This is a ridiculous place. There is only one staff serving the general section and the line is super long. The staff took a very long time to process each customer. So we ended up waiting extremely long. Do not book Hertz. read more

No. No. No. Don't come here! I realize this is beginning of spring break. (Does Hertz know it's spring break??) I was ready for the long wait for airport security check. But, the wait to get our vehicle from the car rental is now exceeding that wait for security by 4x! We've been here, waiting to get our vehicle for an hour and 45 minutes. And, we're told it will still take another 15 minutes, if we're lucky. All I'm going to do from here is feel sorry for our poor choice. So, I won't do that! I'll take this time and try to spare others the pain. Avoid! Go Enterprise! read more

Too busy any time of the day. I waited about literally hour an a half. There is no AC so it's ridiculously hot. By the time I got to the counter. She rushed me. Bad attitude with a fake smile. Where is the ALOHA people?!?! I gave two stars JUST for the people at the return side. They are hard working people with aloha. They should get a split commission from the desk people. read more

Hertz - Car Rental Near Me - Kahului, Hawaii

We used Hertz during our recent trip to Maui and were pretty pleased. The shuttle from the airport came regularly so we didn't have to wait long after we arrived. I would have given them an extra star but as a Gold member, I can usually locate my name on the board and pick up my car without having to go in. However, my name wasn't listed so had to go in to get my stall number. Thankfully there wasn't anyone else in line so it only set me back a minute or two. I'm not sure what the reason for me not being up there; flights time and numbers were provided so there shouldn't have been a problem but it all worked out. I'd rent here again for the convenience. read more

My experience at Hertz's Maui Kahului (OGG) location ranks up there with one of my worst travel experiences ever. The shuttle lets you out into a mob of hundreds of people - some are waiting in line, others are waiting for vehicles - and there's no obvious process as to how you pick up your car. I am a Gold Member, so I moved into the Gold Member line where there was only one clerk working. After 45 minutes in line, I reached the clerk who informed me that my reservation was not properly booked on "her website" (yes, she referred to the Hertz website as "her website") and the fact that I was a Gold Member didn't matter (this particular rental was booked by someone else on my behalf as a gift for our first trip to Maui - they did not include my member number when registering, and there's no option to add a number later apparently). She proceeded to lecture me as to how all of the other people in the waiting room and in the lines snaking outside were also waiting for their cars and that I had some nerve standing in the Gold Member line when I didn't have a properly booked Gold reservation. She processed my reservation anyway seeing as I had waited in line, charged me a higher rate than had been confirmed online, and dismissed me from the desk by saying "go wait for your name to be called" - no indication of where to wait, how long it would take, etc. At this point, I moved outside to ask some of the other customers where to wait. Some of those customers indicated to me that they had been waiting over 2 hours for their vehicle even though they had booked their reservations months in advance. I ended up standing in the sun (there was no more room under the shelters) for another 45 minutes near a window where another woman was handing out rental contracts until she indicated that our car was on its way. It was another 15 minutes until the car came around, at which point there was no inspection or any other formalities. We were told to head to the gate where our rental contract was verified and were allowed to leave. We arrived at Hertz around 2pm, and we pulled out of the lot just after 4. I will say that the return process was fantastic - clear signage, attentive staff, and a very efficient (60 seconds at most) process. I wish I could have rated them separately from the rest of the staff - they would have received very high ratings. What's most disappointing about all of this is that my first impression of Maui came from the staff I encountered at Hertz. Similarly, people who have had great experience renting from Hertz on the mainland will be shocked when they arrive for their vacation in Maui to wait out in the sun for 2 hours while their vehicle is prepared. The entire check-out process must be revamped - there are 5 or 6 other car rental locations right in the same complex as Hertz, and people will start to figure out that a company other than Hertz may be their best choice. read more

FRAUDULENT PRACTICES!!! CREDIT CARD THEFT!!! THEY ARE LIARS!!! This place is great..! If you love being charged extra for their insurance on a car you had prepaid for, AFTER saying "no thank you" when they offered it at the pickup location. $300 charge the company is refusing to remove. DO NOT EVER USE HERTZ!!! They lied to our face after we refused the extra insurance and took our credit card for "security purposes" and then charged us $300 for the insurance anyway. We had made, and paid for, rental car reservations well in advance of our trip. When we got to the location at the airport in Maui the lady at the service desk asked if we would like to purchase the extra insurance. Already having AAA and other insurance, we declined the insurance, an option many people take. The lady said that she would need an imprint of the credit card for "security purposes" so we gave her the card. The next day, looking at the receipt, we noticed two separate charges for optional insurance: $209.93 for loss damage waiver, and $62.93 for premium road service. We called the local location in Maui and they told us we would have to call the central office and kindly transferred us to that phone line. We spoke with a representative there, and were put on hold. After waiting on hold for over half an hour the representative told us we would have to call the actual rental location (which had just transferred our call). HERTZ gave us the run around, and argued back and forth with us for over an hour during our vacation. This is not what a car rental company should be. At the very least when we called to cancel the OPTIONAL insurance, they should have offered a refund of the remaining portion. The individual HERTZ employees are dishonest thieves and the overall company endorses their behavior via complicity demonstrated through their refusal to return their ill-gotten gains. DO NOT USE HERTZ UNLESS YOU WANT THEM TO STEAL FROM YOU!!!! read more

This is the worst Hertz Rental....they are running a racket!! If you don't upgrade to a nicer luxury car they make you wait 30 minutes for your car!! Don't rent here ever!!! Shame on you Hertz!! read more

Even now after talking to a manager no one has bothered to contact me. They are too busy to help customers!!! Worst place don't ever go here!!!! Update: a week later still nothing. Dear HERTZ....get your customer service together this place sucks read more

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. I am not being an alarmist, just giving some info on my experience. I was on my honeymoon and very much looking forward to using a car service to get around the island. I'll keep this short so you get the gist: - First off, the representative was not organized, and even though I had booked through Priceline with all my info on the reservation, she said it showed my reservation was booked for a day longer than it was. I had the confirmation email to prove it, yet she said there was nothing she could do even though SHE WORKS THERE. -CAUTION: They do not perform a check with you before you take the car out of the lot. I recommend you TAKE AS MANY PICTURES OF THE VEHICLE AS YOU CAN. As you'll read later on, they will screw you out of money. -She gave us a Mazda CX9, told us it was in space 109. We went to the lot and there was no Mazda CX9. However, across the lot in the very corner we found our car, filty on the outside and far from clean on the inside. There was a huge line so we decided to just deal with it and wait for the rain to wash it off anyways. So we left. -We returned the car after a week in condition better than it appeared. The guy who received it took a look, said it was alright, then we were on our way. -One week later I get a call saying there was a dent in the fender. I can 100% attest that I did not hit a single thing the whole time. I would not be so upset if I had. Yet, we were back on the mainland with no way to prove it. The rep said i could just put my commentary in online, so I did. Seeing how bad their rental process was, I was certain that the dent they noticed was already there when i picked up my filthy vehicle. For that reason, take LOTS of pictures. -two weeks later, i get a bill for $150. They've since offloaded my "claim" to a collection service, and regardless of fault or no fault, I am forced to pay it. There are other options to get cars on Maui, i HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you choose any other company. I still have such a bad taste in my mouth over this, and refuse to use Hertz again. Hertz, of Maui, you are awful. read more

I told them that I had the key fob and they said they would get back to me and did not; instead, they charged me $250 with no warning.

Where to begin? Aside from broken kiosks, stained seats, a horribly long wait, and no car even though we reserved one months ago, it wasn't bad. BUT THERE'S NO CAR. We would love to be seeing beautiful Maui, BUT THERE'S NO CAR. Oh, they tried to upsell us another $400 worth of B.S. on a different car, you know, a car WE DIDN'T RESERVE MONTHS IN ADVANCE SO SHIT LIKE THIS WOULD GO SMOOTHLY. We came for my 40th birthday, so this trip has been planned to a 'T', BUT THERE'S NO CAR. I am writing this as my wife waits in line to tear someone a new rear vent hole. It's what she does for a living, so this should be entertaining. read more

This is the single WORST Hertz I've ever had the misfortune to spend time at ... I'm a gold member, get off the bus and check for my name on the board walk about 100 feet to my rental. This whole process takes about 2 minutes tops. Once I'm in the car I realize there is a line to exit - I'm 7th or 8th car back from the exit gate - 35 minutes later I am able to exit the lot ... yes ... 35 minutes - I don't understand how this is possible = unbelievable INCOMPETENCE - 4 people standing at exit gate doing NOTHING - mid wait went inside and asked manager for assistance - completely useless. I've been loyal to Hertz for 15+ years and generally have nothing but great things to say - the staff at this location is an embarrassment. You have been warned!!! read more

So, I came here to leave a review hoping it would help others out, but after reading all these reviews I now see that the issue I had is more common than I thought!! First off, if customers say NO to your offer don't push them! MANY of us have worked in customer service/sales and we understand that we need to sell in that role but don't be pushy or rude especially!! "Robin" helped us at the counter and she was the worst. After we said NO to the insurance or upgrading to a Mustang her attitude changed completely for the worst and was so rude to us, not to mention she walked away, covered her mouth with a paper and started saying something to a co-worker! Who does that?? lol Management, PLEASE do something about it! Teaching your employee's to be pushy maybe because they will get an incentive is not a good business practice. read more

Long lines and very slow service spoils the start of your vacation. It took 90 minutes in line just to get to the counter, and this was in the supposedly higher service line. Once you load up your car, you wait in another long line to get through the check-out gate. In comparison, we rented a separate car at Alamo across the street at the same time and were on our way in 10 minutes total. read more

AWFUL! After dealing with the rude customer service agent, we were sent to stall 212. It was an old, beat up, dirty Dodge Charger. We did the damage inspection paperwork and proceeded to the exit gate. This is when they said we had the wrong car and told is to reverse back into the lot and go back inside to see the agent. She has in fact, sent us to the wrong car. So we unloaded, switched to a different car (equally dirty and gross) and redid the inspection paperwork. DO NOT RENT HERE! It's not worth the savings. read more

The humor in my review belies the fact that this location has critical issues in terms of its operations. I invite you to read all the reviews since early March. All but two are poor and most report similar experiences. What's worse is that a Hertz representative has responded with meaningless platitudes and apologies lacking sincerity. Perhaps the more appropriate response would be to address the operational concerns and evident mismanagement of this location. read more

Supposed to have car ready at 3 pm. Went to stall no car..oops gave it away. Have to wait for another meanwhile all kinds of people come and go.. complain to manager he says so sorry nothing he can do. No offer of an upgrade just I apologize. Sad service here. We finally get car at 3.56. Great to be a gold card member read more

The cover photo best describes this hellhole piece of crap. I'll get to the chase. There are many others car rental companies here. They all have shuttle buses. Cars are cars no matter where you go. It's the management of how they run their business that make or break your trip here. The line is insane. It reaches out the door just for reservations and shorter lines for gold members. It all goes out the window cause you all have to wait for cars to come out. You made a reservation with the time and date. Countless other tourists have done that. You would think Hertz would do the simple thing of getting X number of cars for X number reservations for X time and X day. But no they can't do this baseline task. We waited 2 and a half hours from getting in line to a car. Not our car but a car. Because I proactively went to the counter and told them give me that unclaimed car that's been waiting out there. Who knows how long it would take if I got my assigned car that never came???!!!! Avoid this piece of crap hellhole at all cost. The counter people aren't at fault but their sheet eating grin manager who passed out water bottles is to blame. He demonstrated he's more suited being employed as a waiter than managing a business. Learn from us. All of us. Avoid this place. I went to Dollar in Oahu and was out in 5 min. Kihei Rent A Car was same experience for older yet reliable cars. Avoid this place. In response to Hertz comment: Are you not paying attention here? Look at the reviews and photos. You've been pulling this scam on customers for more than 7 years with the earliest review in 2012. You did nothing. You looked into nothing. You brought in more customers than you can handle and at the end of the day you get paid and scam more customers flying in year after year. Don't act like you care. How can you look at yourself in the mirror? How can you kiss your children at night and send them to college with blood money? read more

Just kicking off my vacation by waiting on the curb to get my car when it was supposed to be waiting upon arrival. Staff is extremely rude behind the counter. I asked if I could swap my car for another instead of waiting and Tiffani snapped and told me to leave and continue to wait for my car. Not quite the same experience I have had elsewhere. Avoid this site! About 40 people waiting curbside with me! Won't be back! read more

Booked a reservation online for my week in Maui. Upon arriving at the location I began to get extremely frustrated. It was not busy. I waited for 30 minutes while numerous employees walked around and looked clueless. Eventually I was able to get my car and I was upgraded to a Mercedes SUV... So I suppose I really should not gripe. read more

Horrible service. 8 people behind counter only 3 working. Been in line over 30 min and the line hasn't moved at all.

Literally worst experience we've had renting a car. Took over an hour to get the car! Only one person helping for general reservations with 25+ people in line. Romeo was nice but that was it. Wouldn't rent from hertz again though. read more

As an update. So, Hertz charged me $32.32 for the over charge, despite me returning it well before the time limit. After all the struggle to get the refund, they were "kind" enough to return $31.32 of it. So, let's just hope that extra dollar was used for the general good of society. They can't even do a refund right!!!!! Can I count on Hertz as a charitable organization, so perhaps I can get $0.30 back on my taxes? AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Unbelievable experience. Terrible Terrible Terrible. Now I'll explain. I've rented from a competitor for over thirty trip to Maui. It's always been an easy process. When Hertz had a car for $100 cheaper, it seemed like a slam dunk. When my wife and I arrived it was busy (as expected in Maui). We waited our turn and ended up taking to a person in a computer screen. I reserved a subcompact. The person started with "Let's get you into a Mercedes for a little more." "No, I don't want a Mercedes. I want the subcompact that I reserved", was my reply. She then went through several other cars. I kept replying, "I want the subcompact that I reserved" This went on for over 10 minutes. Then she started the "extra insurance" phase, insisting I need more liability insurance. I told her I have $2.5 million in liability through my car insurance. This continued to sell (or try to sell). She wouldn't give me my car. I tapped one of the live agents in the office and asked her if she would get me the car that I reserved. She gave me the "stink eye" and ignored me. One would assume she would say something like, "I'll get with you in a minute" NOPE. There was nothing. Fortunately I've dealt with Hertz before and reserved another car through a competitor. The extra $100 was well worth it. Not sure why we are given one star as a minimum. If they do nothing, shouldn't we be able to give zero stars? read more

My husband and I rented from the Hertz location when we landed back in Maui for our Honeymoon. I had forgotten to book a car, so had a panic and had to book a cheap car the day of from their website. When I got to the counter (just a short shuttle ride from the terminal), I was presented with complimentary upgrade to a Nissan Rogue. This was awesome!! Especially because we planned to spend a good amount of time in the car with Road to Hana and other island activities. From the shuttle driver to the counter operator, every person that we worked with was very accommodating and ensured that our experience was a good one. The entire experience took no more than 20 minutes and we were on our way to Lahaina. Great place to rent from! read more

I recently rented a car in Maui from Hertz. I was delayed in traffic on the way to return the car and was an hour late. The employee told me there was a late charge but if I called the corporate number they would reserve the charge. When I called the corporate office I explained what had happened and asked them to reserve the charge or at least prorate the fee. The person I spoke with was extremely rude and informed me it was corporate policy to charge a full day for any car returned over 29 mins late. When I asked to speak with a manager she refused to transfer my call. I then asked again and she quickly said they were "all in a meeting." I would recommend renting from any other rental car office on the Island. I had no problems with Avis on Oahu. read more

We received great service at this rental car location. I think the girl who helped us was named Jennifer, and she gave us tips on everything from going to hit the surf at Jaws right away, grabbing lunch at Da Kitchen, to visiting her aunt's coffee shop - Grandma's. She had a great sense of humor and upgraded us to the Jeep we wanted, even though they were supposedly sold out. Because we're AAA members, we got to add a second driver for free. It was part of our package to get a car at Hertz, but given the choice, I would use them again. The process was relatively quick and easy, not to mention helpful and fun! :) read more

Rented a car here earlier in the year, did our own walk through and took pictures of the car before and after. Good thing, because management tried to blame us for damages. They even sent pictures. The damage they said we caused cost $410, and it would go to a collection agency if we did not pay. The collecting agency contacted us about the damaged car. My lawyer and I sent them pictures of our rented car and the car they said we damaged. Different color and different license plate. Always watch your back. Crooks even in paradise. read more

Most awful experience I've ever had at a car rental location. First, a 1.5 hour wait to get papers (with a completed online reservation). Only 2 agents at the counter with dozens of customers in line. Each customer spending about 15 minutes at the counter (which is way longer than at any other car rental locations I've seen). Then, another 1 hour wait for them to call your name to give you the keys to the car. Then another 30-40 minute wait for them to bring your car to the front. They had plenty of cars on the lot and did not seem understaffed. Their system appears to be designed with the main goal of having you wait for hours to get a car. At least the return process was normal. read more

I have been standing in line for 30mins with at least that long to go. This is a corporate rental so I am using Hertz for the first time here, always using Avis or Budget for a pleasure rentals. The experience is night and day - I've had short waits at other places but nothing like this. Even the #1club golf folks are waiting a long time. Bottom line, based on what I see avoid Hertz at this location! read more

I am long time Hertz Gold customer and long time Maui visitor. About 30%of the time our car is not ready when we arrive, but the ultimate abuse occurred today. When we arrived in Maui, like is so common our car was not ready. They gave us a substitute and after driving it for a couple days the low tire pressure light came on. We filled it up and it later went flat. They said they wouldn't fix it, tow it or replace it. Since we didn't pay extra for collision etc it wasn't covered. NEVER USE HERTZ, ESPECIALLY MAUI Unbelievable. Will never use Hertz again read more

DON'T RENT HERE!!! Waited an hour and a half to check in - looks like wait to receive car is just as long. Guy pulling up cars is cussing at frustrated customers. Waited about 10 minutes for the shuttle. Got to the place and line out the door. I'm gold club and still took 45 minutes to get to the desk because my name wasn't on the board. Avoid this place at all costs! These workers seem like its their job to make you wait and piss you off. Very bad service! What a shitty start to my honeymoon. read more

My experience at rental pickup was not good, for two reasons (1) Agent tried to sell me a upgrade (suv), but did not tell me how much more expensive (after i explicitly asked a couple of time), only towards the end give me a bill that is twice the cost of my online reservation (full-size sedan). With my family tired and just wanted to get out of there, I did not start over so I accepted the upgrade. (2) Agent tried to suggest me bring the car back with an empty tank so Hertz would charge me for the full tank. That does not make sense, I feel it is pretty hard to bring the tank empty, because you run at the risk of run out of gas. So for the people who accept this, most likely they will pay full tank price but not really costing Hertz full tank of gas. So I chose to fill up myself, agent told me the closest gas station was at 5 miles away, which was simply not true, there were many gas station right next to the airport. I understand the agent was doing her job and trying to sell services, making Hertz more money. But I feel a lot of the information I got was NOT very "honest". read more

Worst run Hertz in the country. The lines are out the door regardless of time of day. So instead of having more employees working they have simply added more lines in order to make the lines appear shorter. I can't speak for all the staff, but the over weight woman working at the Gold Club line needs a serious attitude adjustment. An employee that makes a proven repeat costumer wait in line for 30 minutes and then walks away to take a break right as he approaches with out saying a word is not the type of employee who should be working the gold line. However, her attitude only got worse after she returned. She basically interrogated me to prove my gold status, and then when I informed her the rental was not made by me, but in my name told me to go wait in the other longer line to be helped as she couldn't do anything for me. She didn't apologize for her ineptitude and instead called on the next costumer before I could ask a question or ask for her manager. This is unexceptable treatment of costumers especially a valued costumer. If any one from Management reads this you have some serious restructuring that needs to be done. read more
