AUWE no ho'i and SHAME on you Hertz Rent A Car! One Star for your poor quality cars and horrible service. My experience included taking almost an hour to get my rental car and getting a car that smelled like fresh marijuana / drugs! I was super excited to have received a corporate discount rate for my car rental in Maui. I got to the front desk queue and there were only two other customers in front of me in line. With about 6-7 desk agents, I thought I would be in and out in no time. WRONG! It took 25 minutes until I got to the counter, then another 35 more minutes until I actually was driving off the lot in my car rental. My service agent was Jack. He certainly had an island mentality when getting a car for me. SLOW! While filling out my paperwork, he asked if I needed insurance on my car. I told him that I didn't need insurance because I was already covered. He then asked me a SECOND time. I gave a response that I didn't need it. Then, he asked me a THIRD time. I gave a response. How many times do you need to ask before you get then answer you need? Then, the conversation went over to "upgrades". Expected. He asked if I wanted an upgrade, and I responded by saying I didn't want one. Then he asked a SECOND time if I wanted an upgrade. [Do you see a trend here??!!] Then, the conversation went over t "filling gas". He asked if I wanted to prepay gas. I told him that I would fill gas before bringing it back. He asked a SECOND time if I wanted to buy pre-paid gas.... [Notice the trend?!?!!] I finally escaped this madness after spending about 35 minutes with Jack.... The highlight of my experience here was when I got into my car which was squeaky clean because it was just returned and washed!!! I got into my car rental and the car had a *FRESH* smell of marijuana. Either the last customer who just returned the car had one last hurrah (pot smoke session) before boarding the plane or the Hertz car washers were having fun while sending the car through the car wash machine. The car was STNIK. [Sorry - I don't smoke, so I don't appreciate the smell of fresh drugs in my car rental]. I was too uspet with my experience with Jack, that I didn't want to go back in to complain and get another car. Note to Hertz management: Your employees should have enough common sense to know that if a car smells like marijuana / drugs, you shouldn't send it out until the smells can be taken out. read more

Incredible! Longest. Slowest line ever!!! There's great customer service and there's that annoying customer service that takes forever for the agents to shut up. From my one star rating you can guess which service (or lack of) that I am getting. The flight from Oahu to Maui was literally 30 minutes but it has taken me longer to get the rental. The service is extremely, painstakingly slow. Perhaps it's the couple of overly friendly, gossipy agents at the counter. Is there such a thing as too much aloha? Adding to the aggravation is the lack of air conditioning in the building - it's the making of a perfect storm for the wrong person. The lines were out the door and there was no sense of urgency to get customers out of the line quickly and into the car. We've rented cars many times before but I have never, ever waited this long for service. read more

I got a fantastic price for a rental here on Maui through Priceline. I was stoked to get a rental for half the price of my original rental I made a few months ago. When you arrive at the airport, you have to take a shuttle to the rental center, look for the very bright yellow shuttle. There seems to be less Hertz shuttles than the other rental companies. When I got to the rental center, there was only two associates helping the general customers, and four assisting the gold club members. There are also rental kiosks where you check in with someone on video chat. The kiosk process took longer than waiting in line, as I watched three people in front of me use it and I got out the same time as they did. There was a couple who were arguing with an associate, and the manager came out, and they held up the line for over half an hour. After an hour wait in line, I was helped and within five minutes of no hassle check in, I was in front of the building waiting for my car to drive up. I had an economy size booked, but I got a brand new Altima for the same price. Awesome! It was clean and had the features we wanted except there were no USB ports to charge my phone. The return process was easy. I pulled into the driveway, parked my rental, an associate scanned the barcodes and handed me a receipt. I was extremely happy with Hertz. Other than the horrible wait, we got a great car with an even better price. It would help a lot to have more associates helping out the general line especial when the line was out the door. read more

Unlike Budget, Hertz charges an extra $10 to add your spouse as an additional driver. Lame! So I didn't add my wife...dont' they know that my wife is a better driver than me? They ran out of compact cars, so they upgraded us to a Camry instead for free...nice! Sorry Hertz, I let my wife drive most of the time anyway. I'll send yall a check for $80....NOT! :-P read more

This is hands down the worst rental car experience I've ever had. We have waited nearly two hours JUST IN LINE to get to the desk to even Check in, and we already have a reservation with the car paid for. It's going to be at least one more hour to get the car itself. This place is a joke, seriously. This place looks like disaster relief, people are sitting anywhere they can, it's crowded and there is an air of desperation. Such a poor way to begin a vacation. The only car that is "easy" to get into is a Mercedes for $300 a day. Now that's just funny. Take your business elsewhere, folks. read more

I WOULD PUT A ZERO IF I COULD! Horrible service waited outside for an hour after my flight for a rental car I already registered for months in advance. only one worker poor customer service and they only wanted to get help if there were gold members. after waiting 45 min a gold member came and they waited on them. I regret not getting the name of the lady who helped my friend and I with our car rental. Based on our flight out of OGG , she was able to change the time of the return so that we would save 50-60 bucks in all. We SO appreciated the changes to the itinerary that she made , as we were trying to do a low cost trip here in Maui. I would 100% rent with HERTZ again. The fact that she went out of her way to give us the best price she could has my friend and I willingly to go out of our way to rent with hertz as much we can when we travel. The company advertised that the cars were cleaned and sanitized well for covid. When we got into the car we noticed there was trash in the middle compartment between the driver and passenger seat. we thought nothing of it as it was just a little trash so we wiped it up and threw it away. Further into the drive we pulled down the middle seat in the back to look at the cup holders, there was sand and little water droplets still in the cup holders. When we parked to clean it up we opened the doors and noticed that the doors were also not cleaned very well and that the middle part had multiple sand particles. as we took a closer look we also noticed multiple mud stains inside and outside of the car. Obviously, the car was not sanitized and cleaned very well. We paid money for this car that we will be using for the next 4 days and i am very disappointed and disgusted. read more

My husband and I lost our rental reservation when we booked through Expedia. Stranded without a car, we walked to Hertz at KOA Airport (on the Big Island HI) in hopes to find anything left available to rent for our honeymoon. We were greeted by Meri-Lee at the counter, who was patient, helpful, and empathetic to our situation. She found us a vehicle and even helped us get our USAA discount. We are so grateful for her fantastic customer service and we hope she gets recognized for this review!! read more

This place is not adequately staffed. Went Kam Day weekend and they had 3 people working behind the counter, but only 1 person was taking customers. Super long line and no one seemed to be concerned. The 2 workers that weren't helping customers steadfastly avoided eye contact with those of us in line. Got our car and it was a beat up piece of crap, not to mention it was FILTHY, inside and out! Gross! When we brought it to the attention of the check out attendant, she just made a note and sent us packing. No offer to trade us vehicles, or even offer to clean it while we wait. I think I'll go back to Alamo for my rental needs, at least their cars are clean! No more Hertz for me. read more

Update: Hertz corporate doesn't care if you were told you wouldn't get a refund and you probably won't get a car unless you pay the upgrade. (See full size image) Another update: as other reviewers have noted, sometimes you get nasty messages after posting your review. I got one via Yelp from my shuttle driver Rory (who was the only good part of this experience) saying basically I should stay off the island. I'll just say that 99% of my experiences with people who live and work on Maui over the years have been wonderful and a few bad apples can't change that. Nightmarish scam--Pay upgrade because the car you prepaid isn't there!! We were waiting over an hour in record heat and humidity and no a/c on 8/17/2015. The customers ahead of us were raging and telling us they don't have the cars that they pre-paid for and didn't know what to do. We get up to the front and basically, we had this choice: Pay a minimum of close to $500 more for the week, ON TOP OF THE NEARLY $200 we prepaid in advance so that we could get the heck out of Hertz purgatory, or we could wait there, possibly for hours, in hopes that maybe an economy car came in. (I never saw an economy car in the lot upon arrival nor upon departure. Lots of Jeeps, Caddy's, mustangs). There was no choice, and this was unbelievable. I've rented elsewhere and when they oversell economy, the upgrade is free. Here, it was stated if we didn't pay for the upgrade (this was the cheapest option available, btw), there was no guarantee that after about three hours there would be a car for us at all. Also, we were reminded that our prepaid reservation was non-refundable. Thanks to Hertz, we couldn't do much in Maui. We couldn't afford to. Given this seems to be the standard operating procedure at this location, I expect the screaming I do online and in written form to corporate will only result in a pathetic form letter. They do this to far too many people--as is made obvious by the reviews--that they just don't care. Oh, Hertz, this was my honeymoon. Thanks for the crappy start. I will pay more at Enterprise because they have the decency to value their customers. NEVER AGAIN. I don't care how well the stateside locations treat their customers, you NEVER get my money again, especially in a year and a half when we return to Maui. read more

Most of the bad reviews here were from summer travelers; I assume it's extra busy and that made the difference in wait times and tempers. We had a great experience renting from Hertz. It was arranged and prepaid a month ahead of time and we got exactly what we had ordered. The staff were friendly and professional. The car was clean and waiting in its stall, and there was no long wait to exit the lot. My only irritation was the line system, as others have noted: three lines - one for "general," one for Pleasant Holidays reservations (that was us), and one for Gold Members. The five active clerks at the windows consistently called for Gold Members before us, even though we were waiting and they had just walked up. It didn't cost us too much time, but I could imagine a scenario in which 20-30 people walk up and are taken before you. So if you travel to Maui in the summer or the busy Christmas week, maybe look into their Gold Membership? read more

Horrible, horrible company. We pick up the car last night at 11pm and the big hawaiian lady who was giving us our car was rude. My dad had a couple questions and she seemed suuuuuper impatient and just had horrible customer service. To top this off there was no check to see if the car had dents. We wake up and notice a huge dent on the front right. We go BACK to Hertz and they say there was NO record of the dent and now we have to fill put a statement. Foreal, we just got to Maui and our main source of transportation is compromised and we're wasting our time having to do this. My advice spend a little more money on another company, you legit get what you pay for and this place is NOT worth it. Two stars for the helpful woman named Robin who gave us the option to change the car. More help than the manager. read more

We rented a car from Hertz while on Maui. No huge issues from booking a reservation online to getting and returning the car. The shuttle drivers to and from the airport could have been a little more friendlier. Also, while In the Hertz rental office, we tried checking in through the kiosks. The one that I was at did not work so fortunately the girl at the desk helped us with no problems. We ended up renting a Mazda 3 which served our needs. They also give AAA discounts. I would rent/recommend to rent from here. You won't find the most friendliest customer service but it's a pretty competitive rate with other places. read more

I had the absolute worst experience with this business. I had booked a rental car 2 months in advance and not only did I have to wait 2 hours in line to get checked in. I also had to wait 2.5 hours in the parking garage just to get my car because they over booked rentals and delivered them to guests with no gas in them. Unless you want to start your vacation off sitting on the floor of a parking garage for hours on end, and end it with random miscellaneous charges to your card, I don't ever recommend giving Hertz your business! read more

Fraudulent charges! I verbally declined supplementary insurance at the counter when offered, but noticed it WAS on the bill when I was given the rental agreement when driving off the lot. I immediately called Hertz to try to resolve the mistake, but they refused, falsely claiming I accepted it. Completely dishonest. I disputed the charge on my credit card, since it was a fraudulent charge for something I never bought. 5 months later, with NO communication from Hertz, I received a letter from a collections agency Hertz has reported me to. No warning or notice from Hertz. Stay away from these criminals! read more

People have to remember you are on ISLAND time. Yes the wait is long but that's how it's here on the islands. The driving on the roads. Expect to wait a while even with reservations. They still have a smile with 20 people waiting in line. I think even the gold club people had to wait. read more

Ditto what Kimmie said below. Despite having reservations for a car, I wasn't prepared for a long, painful wait to get to the counter (about 40 minutes). Once you get through that treacherous line, you'll then proceed to the lot where no one seems to know what's going on. "Oh you wanted a car? Let me see if I can find it," a random worker asks before disappearing. 10 minutes later, the same guy returns and asks the same question. And he'll ask you this as if it's the first time he's done so. Twilight Zone? You breathe a hesitant sigh if relief because this time he walks around and actually finds the car, and it's being filled with gas. But don't get too hopeful, because the workers will wave at each other back and forth for another ten minutes before driving it to the car wash. Excited to leave yet? Don't be. The car wash will take another ten, and then it will be delivered to you SOPPING WET. You get in the car anyway because you just want to regain the last hour of your life. But wait! There's more! Another line to get out of the lot! You realize the papers you need are in the trunk, and you're 7 cars deep with fellow frustrated patrons. This will take an additional 10 minutes! Enjoy! You just lost an hour to Hertz! Congrats! read more

The bad reviews here... well, I'm assuming there's a reason for them. So I'll count myself lucky as I relate my excellent experience to you. It starts by flying into KOA from HNL (we were island hopping on our vacation). The shuttle apparently runs pretty efficiently because we missed it and it (or another one) was in front of us in about two minutes. The shuttle driver (I can't remember his name... Walter? I'm not sure) was super friendly and actually gave us a brief geological description of the different parts of the island and a little history while he was driving us to the car lot. He talked to us about our plans and even told us how to get to our resort from the car lot. Pulling into the Hertz lot, he asked me if I was a Hertz Gold member (I am). Since I didn't need to go to the counter (part of the Gold benefit is that the car is waiting for you, just drive off after you show your ID to the security guy at the exit gate) we looked at the board and he drove us directly to my car's parking spot. Friendly, knowledgeable, and generally awesome shuttle driver was surprise #1. Surprise #2? I had paid for a week rental of an Economy level car. Basically, the cheapest available car. Waiting for us in the spot was a red Mustang convertible! Nice. The shuttle driver helped us unload our bags, we loaded up into the Mustang, and drove off. Total time at Hertz? Maybe five minutes. It was the perfect car rental experience, beginning to end. For the record, my other Hertz experiences on the other two islands, while certainly not as glowing, were also free of any stress. No upgraded car though. :-) read more

The most disastrous experience in 35 years of renting from Hertz. Both poor service and dedication to huge up charges.Xmas week rented two cars/vans for 12 people - total contract both cars- $1,000 - reasonable given car size and season. Only one car available through gold car service. An hour later still asking for the second car. "You need a larger car for all that luggage". Five days later returned the cars - the charge just for the second car -$1,700. Office had three separate contracts in my name on second car aNd stalled for over an hour knowing I had a return flight to catch. Several days later they called me and reluctantly agreed to settle the bill at the originally agreed price. This operation needs management attention and ethics training. read more

Wish I would've read the reviews before I let the AAA agent book my car rental with this company. Our flight landed at the Maui airport on time, but we did not get out with our rental from Hertz until 3 hours later! First, they do have a stand on-site, but NO ONE is there. The only thing that's there is a sign directing customers to the back of the building to ride the bus that will take you to their establishment outside the airport. The bus did not have enough room for all of us waiting. So, it was either ride it standing up, or wait for the next one. My partner and I decided to ride it standing up. We got no help from the driver when loading our luggage. She was just standing by the door looking at us having a hard time putting everything on shelves that were higher than we are tall. Everything else at the bottom had already been taken so we had no choice. A ten-minute ride and we were at the Hertz establishment. Yes, we got there, but we couldn't get in because the lines were too long to fit inside. We already had a reservation, and this establishment does have a special desk helping Pleasant Holidays (AAA) travelers. Still, we had to wait in line for 1.5 hrs. to get help. When we finally reached the agent, she tried to give us the same lecture she had given everyone else before us about getting their added insurance coverage. That was when she met me. I told her: Look! We have been up since 3:00 o'clock this morning. We have not eaten all day, we are thirsty, and we are tired! And! On top of everything, we have been waiting in line to be helped for over an hour. Skip your b/s, get your little fingers to type and give me the paperwork to sign NOW so we can get the duck out of here and you can help the next customer! It still took them 1/2 hr. to get the car ready for us. It was all scratched up, we had to take pictures of it before we took it out of there. It had a strong smell of some chemical and it did not go away the whole time (5 days) we had it. Next time I will for sure shop around for another rental company. read more

Rented a car on Alaska Airlines website when I reserved my flight from Ca. Specified the airport pickup, as I have done with numerous rentals in Maui over the years. Received the usual confirmation email. When I got to the airport Hertz office at 3:25 (after landing at 2:45pm and getting luggage), Robin, the very nice and helpful rep, told me that they had no record of my reservation. After looking at the conf email, it showed a different address, for another Hertz desk in Kahului...10 min away by car and too far to walk! And...the other office had closed at 3pm, even though I had specified when I landed and when I would pick up the car (3:30)! Bait and switch!!! Robin rented me another car for one day and told me that I had to go back to Kahului from across the island by 3pm the next day and reassign the rental! This cost me a good part of the next day and took all that time from a much needed vacation! Robin was great, but another man in the same predicament, was directed away by a screaming Hertz employee. Poor guy undoubtedly wound up going to the other office to find it closed and no car to rent! His treatment was definitely poor example of "Aloha" on Hertz's part. They've lost my future business, as if they care... Will also never rent via an airline, and will always use the specific ar rental website...recommend that you do the same. read more

I really never locked my keys in my car and never had a flat tire in the past 25 years of driving around this planet in rental cars or my own. Me and my fiancée rented a car from Hertz for our week-long vacation, and although the pick-up process for our car was very smooth, I was extremely disappointed by the drop-off process. The lady that met us when we pulled up was very rude, hardly gave us time to get our things out of the car, and even closed a door on us while we were taking things out. They weren't busy either, so I'm not sure why she was so impatient. Things unfortunately weren't any better inside either. We had damaged part of the front bumper while pulling out of a parking space at one of the natural parks (watch for stumps!), however I had already spoken with my insurance, and just had a few questions about how the charges would be handled on their end. Although me and my fiancée were very calm about this, the lady behind the counter didn't even want to entertain the conversation, cut me off, avoided questions, and was condescending in general. To be completely honest, the only reason I'm not giving them a one star is because the drivers for the shuttles and the gentleman that helped us out when we picked up the car were extremely friendly. If they even read these reviews, I hope they get kudos, as they definitely understand customer service. TLDR: We found a cheap deal on a car rental through Hertz, and got the equivalent in customer service here. read more
