I had a call this morning to Dublin Airport Hertz on with a french (i think by the accent) girl or similar, that did not go well. I was trying to brake down the charges that were being applied to me as the total had over €300 that was not accounted for. I was polite and professional, however this girl got irritated with me, she told me I would have to speak to head office, I asked her for the number and she hung up on me, as the phone was still connected I'm sure I herd her say the word "wanker" to her co worker as she put it down. We reserved the smallest car because everyone we talked to said to because the roads are so narrow. I was contacted by John Barry before my trip. Thrifty screwed up my reservation so John suggested I cancel my Expedia booking and book directly with Hertz at the airport. I did so and it ended up costing me $330 more because of Hertz's insurance requirements for foreigners. I have State Farm insurance at home. I asked for help from Hertz after the car was returned. It was pure and abject sticker shock to be told it would be another €600 for their stupid 'Super CDW' insurance - twice the price of the rental and you don't have the informatiom needed to know you should pay for this up front. What information: you might ask? The fact that if you don't pay this €600 they put a hold of €5,000 on your credit card! I brought with me credit card with $5,000 on it so we could do what we want and have extra if we get in a spot. Allll of this said, I'm giving Hertz two stars. 1 star for this scammy hidden fee way of doing business. Put your fees up front. Let your customer be prepared and even pay the INSANE actual amount to rent the car up front. At least they'll know. I am adding 1 additional star because despite feeling duped and paying 3x the money for my car. I am extremely disappointed with Hertz's car rental service. What was supposed to be a stress-free rental process turned into a nightmare due to their dishonest and unethical business practices. On a recent trip to Dublin Ireland, I had a confirmed rental price of 452.42 euros for the entire rental period, which was agreed upon and signed for during pickup. However, upon returning the car, I was shocked to see a total charge of 1329.26 euros on the receipt. This was a blatant disregard of the confirmed price and an attempt to overcharge me. Despite my attempts to resolve the issue with three different individuals at Hertz's Dublin airport office, I was given various excuses and only after persistent questioning did they claim that I needed to use an American Express credit card to get the confirmed rate. This information was never communicated to me during the reservation process, on the phone or in the confirmation documents. It was only upon my return of the vehicle that this issue was raised, and even then, I was never informed of any specific credit card requirements. I had not thought to bring the card they were now requesting since I didn't use it to obtain my reservation and had no idea it was going to be needed. However, I was able to contact my son in the U.S. to get all the information off the card they wanted but they refused to accept it. I was told the actual physical card had to be presented in this day of online shopping! Hertz refused to resolve my issue after many email and phone conversations with their customer service in the U.S. and in Ireland. Hertz did not fulfill their obligations as a car rental service provider and have left me with a huge overcharge of their confirmed rental price. Additionally, they are withholding the paperwork that would prove the charges I authorized when I picked up the car. In my opinion, this is a clear indication of their intention to deceive and mislead customers. On July 3 at 10:31am I got a call from a representative at the airport confirming my reservation. We took the elevator and went back downstairs, on leaving we saw a Discover SUV in the parking lot and we ran back upstairs and ask if we could get it. We had to sit and wait until it was cleaned and washed. The ball joint on the front was so worn out you could hear the clunking noise and clicking sensation in the steering wheel. When we return the SUV they had the audacity to uncharged €1200 for an upgraded vehicle when they were the ones who did not have the SUV I reserved available. WORD OF ADVICE: i work as a manager for a credit card company and over the years I have seen it countless of times in which car rental companies will charge you after you have returned the vehicle. For gas when you have already filled up the vehicle, for scratch and dents, for toll when you have already paid, so knowing this I asked the attendant to look over the vehicle before leaving and sign off that everything was ok including a full tank of gas. He was the rudest human being I have ever encountered. He should not be working in customer service. He refused to sign off and he refused to give us his name. (He said I won't give you my name So, if you try to make a complaint you have no name) We then went upstairs and had a manager argued with us before deducting the up charge amount of €1200, signing off and providing us with a finial bill. I cannot Emphasize this anymore NEVER leave without a final bill as it will be their word against yours and many times the dispute will go in their favor when you try to dispute erroneous charges. Hertz- Dublin Airport I've been a steady business traveler for over 40 years and have predominantly rented cars from Hertz having been a Gold member and President's Circle member. On a recent trip we rented from Hertz at Dublin Ireland Airport and it was the worst rental car experience of my life. It started off great as a golf trip around the country with my 3 sons. We returned the vehicle to Hertz with time to make our flight and were told there was damage to the vehicle. We protested. The Hertz employee said they were adding 1200 Euros to our bill for this damage. We protested again and were told that we could submit an email to Hertz in Ireland. There were some smudges on the front bumper which were mostly removed by wiping them with a golf towel and some bottled water. By now, we had a leave to make our flight (which, of course, they know). Upon returning home we protested to Hertz Ireland by email and learned they had their "engineers" evaluate the damage and they concluded the damage estimate magically added up to the amount withheld by the Hertz return employee. We tried to protest the credit card charge and failed. They credit card company told us the matter had been closed. Everyone knows insurance is almost as expensive as the rental car so just beware that at Dublin Airport these are unscrupulous grifters. Avoid them at all cost! TLDR: THEY WILL LIE TO YOU TO MAKE YOU PAY EXTRA. My partner and I had a car rented for us at the Dublin Airport location through a travel agency. Our information from our travel agency stated we would get a VW manual or similar vehicle. When we go to Hertz at the DuIblin Airport, the clerk claimed that the car rented for us would not fit our luggage as it was only a Smart car. Mind you, my partner and I only had backpacks and my purse. The clerk stated that if we wanted to have our luggage with us we would have to pay an upgrade. Obviously at that point we were forced into paying for the upgrade. Later that day, I emailed my travel agent asking why she would book us a car that wouldn't fit luggage. Which she confirmed that the car rented was not a Smart car and it would have room for luggage. I then had to call Hertz and ask why I was lied to. At first the clerk on the other end tried making it my mistake saying we must of had a lot of luggage.. again only two backpacks and a purse. He then tried saying because I was from the States I must have needed the automatic. Wrong... I drive a manual, perfer a manual- not the case. I would not recommend renting from Hertz, especially from this location. The pricing online was great, but the end experience was not great. In fact, my experience with Hertz was the only negative experience while in Ireland. The lady at the front desk naturally attempted to upsell us on the car rented. She quickly explained why we needed a different car for gas mileage and luggage reasons. She literally laughed as she looked at our bags and said those won't fit in the car you rented. We had 2 bags (They would have fit fine with seats down). She then explained the extra cost involved and told us about mandatory insurance we had to get despite already having proof of our coverage (including liability). Feeling pressured, we went with the upgrade. We should have held our ground. She explained to us the new total we would pay. We asked multiple times to confirm that total. When we arrived at our next destination, we confirmed we were charged almost twice the cost we were told! We were never given an opportunity to review the damage on the vehicle. Just sent a report we were suppose to trust. And the car isn't great. In fact it sucks. We've had it stop multiple times at traffic lights were it wouldn't come back on unless we restarted the ignition. All in all just an unpleasant experience. Tons of options out there for rental cars. Placed a reservation with Conn's Ireland Car Rental. They got us FREE GPS. After reading some reviews I was pretty skeptical when going through this business but in the end I thought it was awesome. The GPS is a little tough learning to use but once we figured it out it was easier. Turning the rental in was simple and had no problems. This place is crazy disorganized. It took us 60 minutes to pick up our car... the line went out the door and mingled with the super long line from the other car rental agencies in the building. It was chaos. After we finally got to the front of the line and paid, they just sent us outside to get our car... no walkaround or discussion of existing damages. When we got to the parking lot, we found the entire side of our car was all scraped up. We then had to wait even longer while we tried to chase someone down to document the existing damage. Most of the employees milling around in the parking lot said they didn't have the ability to help us and promised to find someone who could... it took three tries to find someone who didn't just disappear. Renting a car in Ireland isn't cheap. At least at Hertz you get service with a smile, a new vehicle (not a clapped out Ford Focus like Europcar always used to give me) and you don't have to stand in queue for an hour (like I did at Avis). This is Hertz' main office in Dublin, but the title of 'Dublin City Centre' is slightly optimistic. It would take a good hour to walk here from the city centre! South Circular Road is a main road though and Dublin Bus will get you there. One word of advice, if you are heading to the country, especially areas like the Connemara or Burren or West Cork, take the waiver that gives you €0 insurance excess. The roads are very narrow and twisty, bordered by bracken or stone fences, and it is very likely you will scratch the vehicle simply moving over to let somebody else past. I was told I wouldnt be charged for GPS since the BMW had it built into the car. When I got my receipt, I was charged 61E for GPS. When calling Hertz customer service they said all they can do is email the branch and wait for a reply. A month later no word from them. When we went to pickup the car they tried to give us an Audi A6 when the BMW was sitting right next to it. We requested the BWM so we had to fight for it. The car was dirty, still had trash in it and was never cleaned. There was one person in front of us pickup up a car and it took us 90 minutes to get out of the office. Booked a car with Hertz on-line for the Dublin Airport, arriving after midnight from Barcelona, yet the terminal desk was closed when we arrived and there was no way to pick up the car until the next morning. We paid 30 euros to take a taxi to our hotel and tried calling the agency several times the next morning to no avail. Our Irish travel companion was going to be dropped off that night as well and sadly he also incurred a taxi fare... I contacted this office the next day and explained my plight and they said they'd honor the Hertz airport rate. Upon arrival here the manager turned us over to a snarky subordinate who said he'd honor the $21 per day rate but needed to put a $5,000 euro hold on my credit card. We were pretty outraged by the suggestion and asked about the alternatives of which there is ONE, to simply pay an extraordinary amount for their insurance... The daily rate went up to more than $70 per day! To make matters worse, they imposed a $120 euro gas tank fee (charged) in the event we didn't bring it back full! Just when we couldn't be having more fun, the agent was rude and condescending... So my experience at the physical location of Hertz Dublin City Centre actually wasn't terrible. It has a great location in Dublin where it was easy to get to and even easier to drive out of the city quickly. We made our rental car reservations through Conn's Ireland Car Rental months prior and got a deal where our car rental came with a free GPS rental. Getting our rental car at Hertz, getting the free GPS, and getting instructions from the Hertz employee was all relatively easy. P.S. the GPS isn't worth it. My biggest struggle with Hertz was our mistake in calling the Hertz line to help us with a flat tire. We broke down with a flat about an hour outside of a "real" city and called Hertz since we had gotten the tire coverage. After waiting around for almost 3 hours for whoever Hertz sent out to fix our flat and a lot of phone tag between us and the Hertz employee, we had a nice Irish citizen stop and help us. We called the Hertz line to let them know we no longer needed their man to come change our tire and was notified that we would still be charged around $150 for a service we didn't receive because they had "already sent help our way". This was the most frustrating part because the Hertz employee couldn't give us any updates on the location of the repairman nor could they give us any actual information. My biggest thing is just I wish we had known that calling to use the roadside assistance would cost us even if we didn't receive assistance. Otherwise returning the car was easy and almost hassle-free. My problems were mostly with Hertz overall, so I would definitely rent from this location again if in Dublin. read more

They told us upfront that the full insurance covered everything but the tires, and that they were closing early on the bank holiday we wanted to return the car. Pickup and drop-off were dead easy, even though we did both within a few minutes of closing time and worried that lazy employees might have knocked off a little early. Also, American Express does not cover any damage to vehicles in Ireland as I found out when I recently returned a car to the Dublin Airport location. Long story short...I had EU 502 added to my bill after they found a small scratch under the front bumper, the kind of thing a stone might cause when at speed on the motorway. Also, they add €3.10 to your toll every time you use the M50, and you can not avoid this by paying the toll yourself. Pleasant enough reps but it sounds like the management enjoy deceiving customers. To places that are even there. He tried to charge me for letting my wife drive. I had pre-paid for the rental. Refused to pay. When we got back to return the car at the airport, they charged us for an additional day. Have to fight the charge. They didn't seem busy, but actually more unorganized than anything. No big deal though as I'm on vacation with no where to be. When I prepaid for the rental I also prepaid for the their NeverLost GPS which was like €65 for the week. Not cheap, but oh well how else am I supposed to figure out where I'm going? After I decided to pay an extra €200 for the overpriced insurance we hop in the car and take off. I had set the GPS and within a couple miles we were on the highway with big smiles on our faces. While on the road and settling into the vehicle my wife notices that the vehicle's stereo system has a NAVI button on it. She presses it and sure enough it works great and it's integrated into the car and much easier to use. We don't use the Neverlost GPS the rest of the trip. I figured when I return the vehicle I would ask them for a refund since the car already had the built in one. Upon return I mentioned the situation to the receiving attendant who suggested I contact Hertz via email when I get home to the US. I call Hertz and after a handful of emails thereafter I receive this message from Hertz: "Per the location states they have reviewed the rental details and note that you accepted locally the option of taking a navigation system. At the time you realized that there was a navigation system in the car we would recommend that you return the navigation system you received at the desk to any Hertz location in Ireland straight away so that we could have removed the charge from your rental. As you did not do this I can confirm the charges stand correct and a refund cannot be processed." So I guess I'm an idiot for not taking the time out of my vacation to return the unused GPS to a Hertz location while in the midst of my vacation. Who think to do this? I don't think it would have been unreasonable to have the person who actually gave me the keys to the vehicle to tell me it already had a built in GPS. It's not really about the €65 to me, but it's more about the fact that I feel like I was taken advantage of and spent money on something they new I didn't need. We booked a trip to Ireland through Irishtourism.com . They recommended we rent a car from Hertz at the Dublin Airport, and that we buy the SUPER COVERAGE, along with a GPS navigational system. So we did. When we picked the car up, we were asked if we wanted to purchase the additional tire insurance. We declined and explained that we had the Super Coverage from irishtourism.com. Driving on the left side of the road on narrow streets, it's surprisingly easy to bump the curb. We scuffed the chrome on the front left tire. The back left chrome was already scuffed upon pick-up and we were told not to worry about that. When we returned the car to Hertz in South Dublin, we were charged $1000 in American money for "minor tyre damage" - The charming and glib Stephen assured us we would be getting money back on our card, he had to temporarily go with the most expensive assessment but it would definitely not be that much! And how lucky we were that we purchased the SUPER COVER insurance from Irish Tourism! We were covered through them and they would definitely reimburse us, they always do, but unfortunately Hertz couldn't submit the bill to them directly. We never got anything back from Hertz and Irish Tourism will not be reimbursing us - they said we should have bought the tire insurance . And I'm sure Hertz didn't replace the chrome plate with our $1000, since the already scuffed one on the back left hadn't been replaced. And that most necessary GPS navigational system? It was an antiquated early 2000s tomtom with delayed voice that kept causing us to miss our turns. We ended up using the GPS on our cell phones instead. read more

All car hire depots are the same aren't they? Well no actually. There is nothing wrong with Hertz of course, they are one of the biggest. The problem I had with this one at Dublin was simply too many customers and not enough staff. The queue was approximately 20 people deep and it took me about 20 minutes to get to the desk. The guy who served me was very pleasant as was the chap at the returns point. It was just a bad start to arrive in the country then have to queue for so long to get going. read more
