We were headed to an event an hour north and had picked up all members of our party. There were six of us in the van. The van made it 15 miles up the freeway and the engine shut off. We quickly pulled over to the shoulder however, our location was not safe. We notified the budget office that the check engine light was on and the vehicle would not start at about 10: 39 a.m.. She advised us to let it rest for 30 minutes and try to start it. When this failed to work, she told us to call roadside assistance because the car was already under contract and she could not help us. When we called roadside assistance, The representative told us that we would have to wait inside the car until the tow truck company. She threatened us that if we didn't wait with the car we would be responsible for any damage!!! Are you We were not in safe location in a disabled vehicle on the side of the highway. The temperature was 95° and even higher in the car because it had no power. Suggesting that we endanger our lives by sitting in the disabled vehicle on the side of the highway until the tow truck arrives and threatening that we'd be responsible for damage to the car is absolutely unacceptable and downright egregious! We finally got a text alert that the car had been picked up at 2:45 pm--over 4 hours later! The semi trucks were driving quickly next to the shoulder, shaking the whole vehicle each time one passed. One of our passengers had a panic attack and Budget was not sending help our way so we had to have several friends come to pick us up because our party was too large for one vehicle. We were stranded on the side of the highway for an hour waiting! When we finally got to our destination, we had a friend drive us to the Temecula office at 2 o'clock to try pick up another vehicle. They would not give us a vehicle because the tow truck company had not yet picked up the disabled vehicle on the side of the freeway!! Our whole morning and afternoon was wasted. We missed our first reservation and incurred fuel charges for our friends to pick us up and take us the rest of the way to our event 2 vehicles, from there we incurred almost $200 in additional expenses as we had to get Ubers all the way back home. No one checked to see if we were okay. We were not even refunded $140 our rental expense for the disabled vehicle! AND they charged us for a replacement vehicle that they would not give us due to the delayed towing service!!!This is NOT the customer experience we were expecting!

The manager went above and beyond to ensure they found one for me and she even stayed a few minutes late so I could pick it up. Upon return, everything went smoothly. I did a walk through with the agent and there was no damage in sight and the gas tank was returned full. It was not until 4 HOURS AFTER that I received a call from the same branch manager stating that there was damage to one of the side mirrors. She claimed that it was hanging off its hinge. There was absolutely NO DAMAGE done to the vehicle during my rental and there was no damage to the vehicle upon return. I find it extremely unprofessional that blame would be placed on me 4 hours after the return of the vehicle after a walkthrough had been performed and papers had been signed. If the mirror was hanging off the side of the vehicle the agent and myself would have seen this. Interesting to note that when I returned the car there was no parking available in super tight lot so I was told to leave the vehicle in the middle of the lot and they would re-park it once a spot was open. How am I to know that the mirror wasn't damaged by an employee trying to park the car once a spot emptied or otherwise? PLEASE BEWARE AND DO YOUR DILIGENCE BY TAKING VIDEOS AND PHOTOS. I recently had a mixed experience with Hertz. Unfortunately, I was placed on hold for over 25 minutes and no one ever came back on the line. When I picked up my rental the next day, the process itself was smooth and efficient. However, I received the pre-rental inspection report before I had even seen the vehicle. I'm used to doing a walk-around with an employee to verify any existing damage before driving off, so it felt odd to be expected to acknowledge everything was fine without first inspecting the car myself. To make matters worse, I was never able to open the inspection email. I mentioned it to the representative at pickup, and he said it might take a few minutes to load. I tried again a few hours later and still couldn't access it. Even when I returned the vehicle the following day, the email still wouldn't open. I let the representative know at drop-off that I had never been able to view the inspection report. Because I couldn't access the inspection report, I took my own photos and videos of the vehicle before driving off so I would have date- and time-stamped documentation of its condition, just in case. I also noticed the same bottle of Coke sitting on the counter from the day before, which gave the office an untidy appearance. It's a small detail, but it didn't leave the best impression. Overall, the pickup and return process were smooth, but the inspection process needs improvement. Customers should be able to inspect the vehicle before receiving the report, and the inspection email should be accessible in case there are any questions or concerns.
