Avis customer service is horrible. I booked an electric car through their website. On my way to pick up the car I got a call from the Avis location on Palomar Rd. The representative simply told me that they don't have the car... They didn't offer any remedies at all. I had to prompt them to see what other cars they had. They suggested they had cheaper cars but I would still be charged the higher rate that I paid online. I then asked them if they could check other locations. They responded that they 'could' check other locations, but they won't. I'll cancelled the reservation and won't be using Avis again. read more

Ahh... vacation... weekend getaway... summer retreat. Hotels? Auto rentals? Other humans not named "Door Dash Dude"? Ring a bell? Do you even remember this from the before-times? Speaking of auto rentals, here's something you may not have noticed before. Next to the gas gauge of nearly every rental car, there is an arrow that points either to the left or the right. This is a way to indicate to the rental driver whether the vehicle's gas filler cap is on the left side or the right side of the car. Unless Sativa or Indica are involved, most people don't need this info for their own vehicle because once you fill up your own tank a few times, it becomes second nature as to which side of the gas station island to pull up to. However, this info is crucial when we get back to car renting. If you don't return the car with a full tank, you'll pay a king's ransom to have the rental company do it-- as much as triple the cost that a typical service station would charge. So be sure to look for that arrow; otherwise, you'll be the sativa-lovin' fool when you realize that the cap is on the other side while refueling. After you've already slid your credit card through the card reader. You're welcome. Pro tip: this airport location has never failed me. They always have clean, late-model cars available, most of which don't smell like an ashtray. And one-way rentals to SAN or LAX are way better/faster/cheaper than a taxi, shuttle, or Uber. read more

I can only speak to my experience as I went with my wife to drop off her rental the afternoon of February 20. I arrived at the drop off lot before her, and watched a gentleman wait for 10 minutes while the Avis employee sat cleaning his own personal car with headphones in, totally unaware that a customer was waiting to drop off a car. I can only assume it was the employees personal car, as I don't believe Avis rents 10 or 12-year-old Infinitis. When my wife arrived, we approached the kid who was kind enough to take his headphones out, and certainly pleasant enough, but his "job" appeared to be pretty far down on his priority list. On the bright side, my wife's rental was well kept, clean, and a great value. The Palomar airport is a great location for local pick up and drop off in the Carlsbad area. read more

This location refused to take back my vehicle which means I have to travel another 45min out of my way to return it to the Airport. The lady on the phone Cindy said she was the manager and said she can deny any car brought in because she's an independent contractor. If this is the case the brand AVIS is of very low quality. I rented a car that was not detailed and because of the nature of my business I was not able to exchange the car sooner. Cindy was unhelpful. She could have offered another location that could help me. The way she handled this situation was pathetic and unprofessional. First time using this location-Great staff, they answered all my questions. Cars are clean. The drop off box for night returns is so convenient. I will definitely come back next time. I dont love the 250 deposit but every company these days has something like it. You can also leave your car in the lot below without any charges. Returning the one way rental that I got from LAX was a breeze! I love small airports! Finding the car rental return was easy, just follow the signs once you get to the airport. The drop off is located within the airport parking lot, you need to get a ticket to enter, but the first 2 hours are free. There are also drop boxes to leave the keys in, in case the rental car return is closed. Remember that this location is only open certain hours because it is a small location. read more

Every call I made to this local location was redirected out of the country. I asked the representative where was my call answered? The reply was India or Mexico. The representatives are rude! 3. I can not add a reservation to my membership because my membership was created after the reservation. Therefore I can not collect the points. First time renting a car; it wasn't the closest place for us, but we made the drive and were happy that we did. Making reservations was easy; made it the day before we needed the car (mind you, this was during Memorial day weekend). The price wasn't bad either; about $35 a day for a compact. we got a little lost finding it but theres a little, itsy sign thats at the end of the drive way in front of the airport. Theyre right by Hertz. Pick up was really easy; it was a little busy, but Richard was great. We got a nice Toyota that was really good on gas. The cars are located straight down the hill from Avis. When you drop off, you just park it in the reservation stall, then write down the mileage on the pamphlet they initially give you, then drop it in the key box with the keys. read more

Do not rent here....CAR INFESTED WITH ANTS! We rented a car for a day & soon realized during out trip that it was infested with ants. The insects were crawling all inside the car (and on us!), coming out of the vents and doorjambs. We finally were able to find another Avis rental and exchanged the car for a different one. Called the manager at Carlsbad Car Rental who said THEY KNEW they have an ant problem, with ants getting into their cars, and basically tried to say that it was not their fault they have ants, that the Carlsbad airport is the one at fault and is not doing treatment. Told us to try running the heater for 20 minutes - as if that is even possible in this heat on the way up to LA on the 5. They know they have a problem with ants in their cars and are literally renting them out anyway. The manager was trying to make it seem like all of Carlsbad has ants which is categorically untrue. Yeah, we have ants in the ground but I've lived here for 6 years and haven't once had ants inside my car. Maybe they need to do pest control inside their vehicles or treat the property where they store the cars but simply renting out ant infested rental cars is not only GROSS but totally unsafe and a poor business practice. Even after we switched cars, we still had ants crawling on our belongings that had been stowed in the previous car. It's unbelievable management would think any of this was remotely acceptable. But no, she wanted to argue that it "just happens". Meanwhile we were late because we had to find another Avis dealer and switch cars. She credited us 1 day for the car but frankly they are lucky we didn't get in a car accident with all the ants crawling all over us. Absolutely unacceptable and gross. read more

Sabrina worked really hard to find a solution which made my traveling day way better! Let me first preface that the customer service at Palomar Airport was pretty good. That is the only reason that the review could have gotten more stars. This review is much more for AVIS corporation as a whole. Whatever you do, don't be bamboozled. If you can find another company to rent from, I would highly recommend you doing that. I have talked to customer service 3 times and nobody can help me.. Let me tell you what happened... I rented the car via calling the reservation line. I specifically requested a car that got the 48 miles per gallon as claimed on the their website. The gentleman on the reservation line got everything lined up and then asked me if I would like to prepay it as it gave me a couple dollars off. When I got to the rental car place, they did not have the car I had requested. I was told at the counter, they cannot guarantee the car I requested. That should have been told to me before I got my reservation. They told me they had another car that would be suitable in the Oceanside office but I would have to rent the car from the Palomar office first and then "exchange" it for the one there. I asked if I could just get compensated for the error, the guy at the Palomar Airport office offered me a half a tank (5 gallons). Exchanging the car added an extra hour onto my car renting process. When I got to the Oceanside office (again a nice customer service person) I was told the car would not get 48 miles, maybe 40 miles to the gallon. The car ended up getting 32 miles per gallon. The whole reason I rented a car was to get better gas mileage than I get on my own car. It wasn't worth it at all! I will never rent from Avis again! The process to get a refund or even an apology for my car renting experience has been a hassle. They have the WORST customer call center. Please understand, the people are not the problem, the system within AVIS is designed not to create loyal customers or repeat business. The system AVIS has is not designed to cater to people and/or their needs. Its designed to make a buck and not look back at who it stomps on in the process. Very unfortunate situation! read more

I was very nervous to rent from here, I usually use Enterprise. Enterprise was charging ~$600 when Avis was charging ~300, so I decided to try it out. Considering I was nervous about them not having what I needed on hand, I tried to move my rental up 1 day. They had no cars available, that seemed weird and did not reassure me that they would have my car. I could not even bump it up a couple hours, I think they should adjust their system to fix this, my car, as well as many others, were just sitting there. When I arrived, I was unsure where to go, and went to the wrong place. I went to the parking lot where there is an Avis sign. The guy I met down there was awesome. He was very helpful and gave me a ride back up to the check out counter. He also waited to bring me back down to get my car. The guy at the counter was nice enough. He presented me with 2 car choices I have never seen, when I asked for more information to help me choose, he told me about crossovers and off roading. I have no idea what a cross over is, and have no intention of going off road. I think information regarding trunk space, gas mileage, etc. may be more helpful. The car I received had a third row, which I didn't need, but was cool. The third row however, when folded down, made the trunk smaller then it would have been otherwise. I would have preferred a deeper trunk. I always buy the insurance, so I don't have to worry about dings and such, caused by other people. $35 a day was kind of steep. We will never be using Avis again. We rented a car for 6 days. Upon our return we noticed a toll charge which was surprising to us since we never use toll roads. We called Avis twice on Sunday (April 21st) and were redirected both times to the Avis toll number which didn't seem to be working that day. Called back twice on Monday (April 22nd); the first agent gave us a partial refund and also sent us an itemized toll receipt. After I ended that call, I looked over the toll receipt and saw that we were charged for using a carpool lane. I called back and explained to the second agent that at no point were we told we couldn't use carpool lanes and I also told her that we had verified before we took the car that there was no service fee for the toll box in the car. That agent said she would process an almost full refund. Today (April 25th) we noticed we only received the partial refund. Upon calling back today (April 25th), they said they could only see the first agent's notes about the partial refund. I asked to speak to the supervisor and she said that she could also only see the partial refund. The fact that they would lie about not seeing the almost full refund note is ridiculous and deceitful. We will definitely not be using their services again. read more

I have probably rented more cars from this location than any other place combined due to the over-the-top customer service treatment that Palomar Avis provides its customers. Avis really does try harder! I've typically rented from the location in Oceanside, but they did not have any cars available 2/16 so I tried the Palomar Airport location instead. I was so pleased with their service, I wish I had discovered this location sooner. It was a busy Sunday (who knew this little airport was so busy) and I didn't have a reservation, but Veronica quickly got me on the road with a Ford Escape - perfect for lots of luggage. I had a couple coupons, but she still found us a great rate. I returned the next week for a one-way rental to LAX and she had everything ready for us. Thanks! read more

If I could give a negative star review, I would. I rented a car that had something that looked like blood on the seat, then when I open the trunk it had a dirty sock and a bunch of dried grass. I called to exchange the car, when I showed up to where I picked up the car I was instructed to go back to the top lot and return the car and drive the car back down "It will be easy". I calmly stated it has not been easy and got back in the car to go to the top lot. I got an aggressive stare down and the employee started to walk towards the car. As I went to lock the door, he leaned forward and spit towards the cars. I told the owner at the front desk what happened. I got some possible excuses for his behavior, including he was surprised since they are "Christians". I do not see what religion has to do with this. As I waited for an uber to take me to an Enterprise Car rental close by (who had excellent customer services and were cheaper for a better car), the owner came out and mentioned the employee walked off the job. read more

This is the second time I've used the Avis at Palomar Airport Rental Center. The first time I caught that they tried to give me a car with no cruise control. The car I received was a Hyundai Accent. since I've driven every other Monday but this morning I figured it had cruise control. My bad for not checking until after it was too late. However I just don't understand how any rental car company would have any cars at all that don't have cruise control it's a basic feature. Needed a car for a one way trip to central California. Made an online reservation (I thought) and got a ride to pick up the car on the specified date. Timing was important, I had to be in central California at a certain time, pick up a truck and meet the people to load my stored furniture. Any delay and the whole plan would fall apart and cost me a bunch of money. Didn't go as planned, no reservation, (never got a confirmation email, my bad) so no car. Richard went above and beyond to find me transportation, found a car that had been just returned, not even back in the system yet. Got me on my way. This office took care of a problem that was not theirs in the making and satisfied my needs, it was my problem, but they solved it. Should I need a car in the future I will certainly call them first. BTW they were the only rental agency that offered a one way to my desired location, and the rate was better than any others. Definitely five star service. read more
