Union Rack and Roll - Bowling at night!

This is a hidden gem at Purdue. It is a nice cute bowling place with many lanes under the Purdue…read morememorial union building. I really like the ambiance at night, when they turn on the neon lights and turn off the regular day lights. Prices aren't that bad at all too, compared to when I went bowling in California in my hometown. The workers there are nice, mostly college students. I didn't try any of the food there so I can't speak for that but overall a great place to have fun!

The fact that the name of Purdue's student-run bowling alley is itself a 'double-meaning' is a good…read moresign. Wait, what? The Memorial Union's "Rack and Roll" is a play on the phrase 'rock & roll' (which they have playing through speakers), as well as describing exactly what you can do there: shoot billiards ('rack' the pool balls) and go bowling ('roll' the.....well, duh). So the name is (perhaps unintentionally) clever, big deal. But is it still worthy of a 5-star rating? Absolutely. Their pool tables are either in good or great condition, depending on which one you choose, but the lighting is perfectly appropriate for the nature of the sport. The arcade games are excellent as well--they have 2 pinballs, 'Family Guy' and 'Iron Man' (both newer Stern tables in fine shape), in addition to a Guitar Hero Arcade version, high-definition Terminator shoot-em-up, and several others. The bowling area is just as well-maintained, as I've never experienced an issue with balls getting stuck in the gutter, needing a pin reset, etc. The animations that are displayed after a throw (e.g. spare, strike, 7-10 split) are cute, sometimes funny even, and I'm fairly certain that they're student-made on behalf of the college of computery-people. I recall the price to bowl being very reasonable, and often times students can do so for free during special events. I loved coming here as a student to roll (just NOT on Shomer Shabbos), and I'm looking forward to many happy returns as an Alumni. The Union's Rack and Roll is a terrific place to relax in between classes or decompress after a 2-hour differential equations final. "Well, that's like, your opinion, man."

I brought my 4 1/2-year-old here today and initially thought I had found the perfect place. Within…read more30 minutes, I was at the register purchasing a $157 monthly pass (4 months) for the toddler area. I was impressed enough that I texted three friends photos, told my wife to start planning our son's birthday party here, and was actively asking managers about upgrading to full access because I had just discovered the larger "Adrenaline" area. For context: it's Indiana winter, it was cold, and I had a hooded sweatshirt on with the hood up because I was freezing. During my 2 1/2-hour stay, I spoke with two managers about memberships--neither said a word about my hood. While walking around trying to keep up my child, I heard someone off to the side say, "Take your hood off." I approached the man, who asked me politely. I politely asked why it was a rule. His response was shocking: "So I can see your entire face on my 50 cameras." This was 11:30 a.m. on a Friday, not a packed weekend night. I turned away to continue looking for my child, removed the hood, and muttered "whatever dude" under my breath. That's when the situation escalated wildly. He charged toward me, yelling: "I'm the owner--if you don't like it, leave!" I had already complied. That wasn't enough. He then shouted: "I'll give you your money back!" And finally said something that truly crossed a line: "If there are off-colored people with hoods up and we ask them to take it down, what would that look like?" I'm still trying to understand why race was brought into this at all. Let me be clear: * The facility is great for kids * The staff and managers were wonderful * We were not leaving anytime soon until this happened But the owner's behavior was aggressive, unnecessary, and completely inappropriate. A simple rule explanation would've sufficed. Instead, it turned into a power trip with racial commentary that had no place in the conversation. Rules are rules--but how you enforce them matters. I'll take the refund. And I'll take my business elsewhere.
