I like the library because it provides a place for me to work and concentrate but can someone please control the noise at this place? It's a library and yet it fells like we're sitting in either a kindergarten recess ground or a coffee shop. The lady came up to check out books at the counter was so loud and the receptionist (if I can call them that) encouraged it by being loud as well. In addition, I'm sitting there and the receptionist were the ones that make the most noise aside from kids. It's quite frustrating if you're not the type to work in a loud environment. It's called a library, which means volume control, so please speak like so. read more

This place wasn't here when I was growing up, but I'm happy that it will be a part of my child's life. Love the peek-a-book story time (for 0-3 year olds), but it hasn't been convenient lately...nap time! It's great having a local library so close to home. Beautiful building and helpful librarians. Love it here! It's a great space for the kids to do homework, do research on the computer, and just chill out after school. All of the librarians are helpful, but Ms. Marty is our fave. She is very attentive and patient with the kids in the children's library. The kids feel so welcomed when she is there. She always has a fun project for them to get involved in if they wish. We try to make it to the library at least once a week and I'm so happy we have such a great resource in the community. read more

Am I still in Contra Costa County? Coming here from my rather dank and damp local library (El Sobrante) was like coming from B&W Kansas to Technicolor Oz. It's got even more techy bells and whistles than the library at my fancy private college. If I was a kid, I don't think I'd ever leave this place. The site of my first job! Hercules' first library has its ups and downs. I've been working at this library as a student assistant ever since they first opened up. The architecture is modern and utilizes lighting extremely well. There's an outside reading area in the middle of the library to give patrons a outdoorsy feel. The are only a few cons. Since it is relatively new, the collection is still small. Also during the school year, there are a large amount of rowdy and loud young teens messing around in a "sound proof" room. Other than that, excellent services, study rooms, printing offices and a computer room. As a student - excellent place to study pre 2 pm & post 4 pm weekdays, anytime weekends. As a library patron - limited selection but new books! Very fine architecture, all Herculeans & neighbors, explore! read more

I love this place. It's modern, updated, beautiful, quiet, and a welcoming place for learning. I often read in the small outdoor area in the center of the building and I love checking out DVDs of old and new movies! I've always found what I'm looking for here and if not, the friendly, knowledgable staff has helped me out. I'm a proud member for sure! read more

The outside and inside of the premises is just beautiful. Furniture is new and comfortable, I went in on a Saturday and it was the perfect ambience for studying on the weekend, quiet even with a significant amount of traffic in and out. read more

Why buy books when you can borrow one? I went to the grand opening celebration - that's how excited I was about finally having a library branch in Hercules! They did a great job planning the space and I agree with Aubrey M. - the new arrivals section is rockin' (for a library, ya know). If you go just browsing for a new read, the selection can feel small and honestly, I feel like the kids section is bigger than the adult literature side - BUT if you browse the Contra Costa Library's online catalogue [www.contra-costa.lib.ca.us/] before you go you can actually hold books, get on waiting lists and have them sent to the Hercules branch for pickup once they are available. I've done this several times and it's extremely convenient. Go to the library, learn something and support your community! read more

This is a great addition to the city! The library is very clean and bright. It is the perfect place to study...which I had to do a lot of while studying for my CPA exam. They have a good selection of books and all of their books are new. They even have a good selection of Chinese books. Oh...and free high-speed wireless internet is always a plus! read more

Nice library, recently built. Can be a bit too sunny inside for my eyes sometimes. I had bad luck with their DVD rentals, most didn't work on either one of my DVD players. Some computers can be used for one hour, but look at the end... they have 2-hour computers there. ;) Nice library. read more

This is a great library to study in if you like tall ceilings, space and no crowds. Reserve a room with the amicable librarians, or just select a table. It has a good children's section and a wide range of books for teens and adults too. Just love the place! read more

There is plenty of room and comfortable chairs. But having activities or readings or music performances makes it hard to study or read. Hercules should have made a separate room for these activities. read more

A welcome civic amenity; until it opened, four or five years ago, I've been told that Hercules had the dubious distinction of being the largest city in California without a public library. The only downside is that budget limitations have led to somewhat restricted hours, and, in the last year or so, the cancellation of many periodical subscriptions, even such basic things as Scientific American and the New Yorkier. read more

Unlike the 2 CCCPL branches I frequent once in a blue moon - Pleasant Hill and Pinole, this place is not decrepit, or still stuck in their depressing 1970s liveries. It's wide and open. Storytime in the kid's section is really great! The kid's section is fully equipped with children's stories from all around the world, too! I spend most of my time in the kid's section, but the other day I wandered into the adult section and found individual study rooms. AND a teen library within it's own roomed section. Great library! I really like that they're open on Sunday. I love reading by the fire place. All of the natural light in the library is great for reading. Lots of light at night too, so it's not dim. Real great place to study! read more

I went to this library on a Saturday. Library is build in a very modern way. Architecture and design is very modern. Adult and child sections are separate and quite afar. NOISE levels is very LOW. Study rooms are quite nice and chairs and couches are super comfortable. Internet was working good. It is ideal for students who want to study with a partner or with a teacher. Came to study here since there where such good reviews but to my disappointment ALL the tables where dirty & the outlets were broken.

I'm actually studying here at the library right now (well, studying, surfing the internet, and staring off into space), and I agree with John L.'s review - the library is an awesome addition to the city. With windows spanning half the room up to the soaring ceilings, and a peaceful zen like tree planted in the center of the library, I was pleasantly surprised with my visit. Besides a children's room, teen center and homework room, there are also three small study rooms, which can be reserved for an hour/day, and free wifi! Not a huge book/dvd selection, but they're working on it. read more

I love the library and do have to use their computers occasionally when things are not compatible with my MAC that I have. With my work hours, it is often difficult to make it in during the limited library hours. However, I also have 2 kids. I know library hours were cut when Hercules had it's financial troubles, but I think it would be helpful if the library was opened maybe from 1-9pm on Sundays. Many students often have research projects that they work on over the weekend. Plus adults that need the library may be off on the weekend and need to come during their time off from work. read more
