I was incarcerated here for about 14 hours after a false arrest by the Imperial County Sheriff's Department for medical marijuana. The officers treated me respectfully. The place is very run down and could use a complete remodel; hot water didn't work, paint peeling everywhere, exposed pipes and wires, mattresses blankets and clothes all ripped to shreds, etc. One good thing is the food, much better than any county jail I've ever been to. The inmate canteen is open three days per week and has a walk-up window, much better than other counties that are 1-2 times per week where you order then wait 3 days. Small things like this make for a safer environment for both inmates and staff. (Are you paying attention Los Angeles County?) They have dorms and cells, I was in a dorm. There were about 30 Hispanic inmates and 4 Whites, all the Blacks/Others were housed in cells at the time, don't know if this is the norm for this facility. For those who don't know, all inmates housed in California jails/prisons are classified by race. I suggest you do a search and watch any one of the many documentaries describing the racial politics in the California justice system. Anyway, upon release there is a payphone where you can make collect calls, but expect to wait a while for your ride because the jail is located way out in the middle of nowhere and nothing is within walking distance. read more
