The Herbert Grand Hotel can best be described as a diamond in the rough. Having recently come under new management, the hotel is undergoing some work and while the room my girlfriend and I stayed in was basic and definitely in need of work, our stay was comfortable and met our needs. We have stayed here before because they do allow dogs. It is a quaint place right in town across from good shopping and dining options. Unfortunately, the last time that we stayed there was no wifi in the room, even though it is supposed to be offered. We needed the wifi to be able to work part time remotely during our stay. We spent a good hour trying to connect and had to call twice. The second time that we called, the owners had already left the premises (around 5:30 pm) so they had to come back and we had to wait some more. We then had to switch to a smaller room just because wifi could not be reached in our original room. It was a rough start to our trip and took up a fair amount of time that could've been spent doing something (anything) else. read more

The Herbert Grand is on par with many of the hotels I stayed at in undeveloped Tibet. The night I spent there was one of the worst lodging experiences of my life. Our room had a queen bed. The bed took up about eighty percent of the room. The bed was at an angle so probably twenty percent of what was left could be found behind the headboard. There was no space in the room for our four bags. I was pretty excited that our room was going to have a whirlpool. In the Herbert Grand a 'whirlpool' is a very small bathtub with jets and a rickety sliding door that reminded me of the metal shower stalls found in old motels. I tried a shower in the 'whirlpool' and the Herbert Grand tried to do me injury. The water wouldn't stay one temperature for more than thirty seconds. I had to keep grabbing the handle of the cheap-o sliding door and jumping up onto the edges of the tub to keep from being burned. Top it all off with a breakfast that a gas station might be proud to serve. Not the gas station across the street, they wouldn't be caught dead serving what the Herbert serves, but some gas station somewhere, might be proud. If the pre-packaged muffins and danishes had expiration dates, those dates were clearly decades in the future. [It was really depressing to look out the window at the aforementioned gas station across the street that obviously had better food while we consumed this breakfast.] Needless to say we canceled our second night and found a wonderful room at the River Port Inn. read more

The quaint New England town of Kingfield, ME is one to be experienced. The same can be said about staying at the Herbert Grand. I came in the summer, when the scenery was green and when there were fewer out-of-towners, but I hear that the place gets quite busy in the winter with skiers. The Herbert Grand really is a diamond in the rough, or as people have called it "The Ritz in the Woods" when it opened in 1918. Given the small-town feel of Kingfield, the Herbert stands out as an important and curious stopping point. The interior of the place is impressive, filled with original classical woodwork and design. It needs to be kept in mind that the hotel once served as a private residence for the affluent and honored Herbert S. Wing, the King of Kingfield. So there is definitely a lot of history in the place. They even have history exhibits of the town and of the property, portrayed inside three old-time phone booths in the lobby. Some of the original furniture is still in the building. I thought it was neat that my room had one of those old-fashioned telephones hanging on the wall. The rooms are modest and serviceable. The bathroom is my favorite part because the hotel uses the same freshwater spring aquifer used by a water bottling company just down the road. And you could really taste the difference. Imagine also showering in bottled water. It was that good. It is true that there is limited to no internet access in the hotel. But it is also true that phone signals in Kingfield naturally suck. Given the location, it's understandable, if not preferable, in my desire to get away from it all. The food is pretty good too! For dinner I had Polish beer bread for the first time -- crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Delicious! I had vegetable barley soup, with assorted sandwiches, wraps, and salads. And the next morning I had a healthy breakfast of oatmeal with toppings, bagels, pastries, juices, and assorted bread for toasting. The place has a bigger and more appetizing menu. This is just what I ate with the group I was with. Also, this place is ripe with GHOSTS! A lot of weird stuff happened during my investigation of the place with the Maine Ghost Hunters. So the Herbert definitely holds a layer of mystical appeal. Check it out! It'll make you a believer... So if you want to get away from it all, if you want to experience a New England town, if you want to experience something paranormal, or if you just want a place to eat and stay, I highly recommend the Herbert Grand in Kingfield. Although I think the other reviews pretty much summed it up for the most part, I wanted to make sure I gave this place a review after the experience I had there. Perhaps even knock down the 1.5 star rating of this place. Ya know your Aunt Sally's house, the one that you visit from time to time because you have to? You don't even really like that side of the family but ya kinda have to go visit because you never see them and they never get out of the house. The house was built in 1932 and old Aunt Sally doesn't have the money to fix it up so she makes do with what she has and puts doilies on every table, some fake flowers on the dresser, and tapes up some wallpaper in the bathroom. Essentially... that's the Herbert GRAND Hotel. Sure is grand. I'm not sure if anyone else was even staying there during my stay. The main lobby looks kinda cool actually with the fireplace and big red couches. DO NOT be fooled. That's probably the nicest thing you'll see during a stay here. I went up to Kingfield this past weekend to go skiing at Sugarloaf. My cousin booked 2 nights for our group at this place. Let me just run through some noteworthy points about this place... - No, none of the rooms have a TV. At least not the two that I had the pleasure of staying in. - Yes, they have wifi (HUGE SURPRISE). - Yes, said wifi is horribly intermittent. - No, they do NOT serve a complimentary breakfast. $8.95/person. Yah! Let me get right on that! - Yes, they heat the place with old steam radiators. No, you cannot control the temperature of your room. - Yes, they've taped up wallpaper in some cases. Our closet had wallpaper literally taped up with packing tape. Very strange. - Yes, it's probably the cheapest place you can stay at in the area. That being said, my advice is to pony up the dough and go for a nicer, more reputable hotel or inn. You'd be doing yourself a favor. And that's about all I have to say about this place. Why didn't I comment on the service? Well... let me just say I have no comment. read more

The Herbert Grand is a gem of a time capsule, the kind of place that's getting harder to find. Full disclosure: if you're looking for a thoroughly modern hotel, it's probably not for you. The hotel is almost 100 years old and, like any old building, shows its age in places. That said, it's incredible how many original features survive, including some furniture in the rooms (not the mattresses, don't worry) and the 1920's phones in their original booths off the lobby. The rooms and bathrooms are clean and perfectly adequate. The place just went through a full renovation, and the linens and towels feel new. If you're not so tired from skiing/riding/hiking that you don't immediately fall asleep, you're probably not doing it right anyway. Wifi is easy to access and free. I downloaded several Spotify playlists for the ride home with no problems. I didn't eat or drink there, but the hotel has a nice dining room, and the lobby becomes a friendly bar in the evening with skiers talking about their day and watching the Pats. Apparently they have a great list of local Maine liquor and beer too. Dawn, the owner's son and de facto manager, couldn't have been more helpful. I sprained my knee pretty badly on my second day. When she saw me hobbling through her lobby she quickly got me some ice and let me put my boots up on the coffee table by the beautiful old fireplace. She was made manager in an emergency appointment seven years ago and hasn't left! Finally, the place has an awesome history. During Prohibition it housed a speakeasy in the basement where the original owner would ply state leaders with booze and women only to later blackmail them to further his career. Rumor has it that his ghost haunts the place today. Watch out on the third floor. read more

Went in on Saturday, and with a friendly tone asked the older woman at the front desk when the new McGreggor's pub would open. Her Response: "Can't you Read"? , "If we had an opening date it would be on the door" (which read "under construction"). "Guess you should come back" ... I was in utter shock. I literally couldn't believe that rudeness of that old bag behind the counter and I will never step foot in that place, Ever.. I hope they're closed in 5 months, and with their likely crappy pizza to match their crappy attitude I'm sure they will be. read more

My wife called to check on a "gift certificate" it said it was valid from Oct. 14th, 2012 to Sept. 30th, 2013. We didn't "need" this "gift certificate", but figured we would check to see what the situation was since it said it had expired. The male who answered (claiming to be the owner) was literally the rudess person my wife has ever spoke to. He told her to learn to read and hung up on her. I called and asked him if he had just spoken to my wife. He said "yes I just hung up on her." I told him I was super excited he was such a jerk (not exactly in those words). Anyway, don't give this out of state jerk a dime. His mommy apparently owns the place, and he doesn't exactly understand how to do business in Maine... read more

This is a beautiful old hotel with a very polite staff and the keepers keep true to old hotel traditions. Business Travelers be advised that they do have a strong WIFI connection, there are no televisions. Also, be sure to read all posted signs! This traveler learned the hard way,that if you fail to return your room key in proper place at the front desk you will be charged a nonrefundable $25 replacement fee. read more

This hotel is a turn of the century circa 1900 classic. If you like the old victorian style with the original oak and chesnut your gonna love this place. The rooms are being renovated and still keeping its classic old world charm, simple and clean. No TV in the rooms...get over it! If ya wanna watch TV stay home. One star is generous. The lobby is welcoming and comfy, with the only TV in the Hotel. Rooms and bathrooms are old, old , old and outdated. When was the last time you saw a single bulb ceiling light in a Hotel? The Mattress was hard as a rock and at least 15 years old - maybe older 25. If you want safe and secure in a small town 15 miles from Sugarloaf USA, I still would not recommend the Herbert, sadly. The worst customer service over the phone I've ever encountered! We cancelled our reservation over the phone after our interactions with these people. Going into the Herbert Grand Hotel was one of the biggest mistakes I've made in my life. Walking into this hotel, it looked very antique and cute. When we walked up the stairs into our room, our minds changed completely. The beds were very dirty and dusty, the shower had hair on the bottom and the walls. The room was extremely small, congested, creepy and overpriced. We have asthma, so clearly this room would not accommodate our needs. We decided to leave, and try to get our money back. The staff did not accommodate our needs and we got no money back. If you are staying in Kingfield, Maine, do yourself a favor and steer clear of this hotel. read more

This was a really uncomfortable stay. We checked in, they guaranteed us two rooms across from each other. We went to the room we were assigned and walked in with our kids on a couple that was half dressed. Then when we came down, the front desk guy was aggressive about how it wasn't his fault that he made a mistake. He offered us a "free cot" to compensate us for his error in giving us the key for the wrong room (which we didn't need nor ask for) and said, "I don't know how I'm inconveniencing you, I have another room available to you on a different floor." It was really uncomfortable to even have to justify why that was unacceptable and, if he hadn't refused to give us a refund, we would have gone someplace else. Adding to the discomfort, I could hear him complaining about us at the bar moments later as we walked up the stairs to check out our new room. This for a very rundown hotel that my kids thought was 'creepy and stinky.' read more

Just got back from a wedding up in Maine and I wish we had had more time to stay at the Herbert Grand. Dawn, the lovely manager who will assist you in any way possible and stays on site, was prepared to have our room ready two hours ahead of check-in and even called me back with the number of a local cab company in case we needed one after the wedding. It seems as though several reviewers were unhappy with the lack of TV's in their rooms and of the "dated" feeling of the hotel. The fact that this hotel was built in 1917 and lovingly restored to its original grandeur is part of the reason why my husband and I chose this hotel. We wanted to stay somewhere that had character, charm, history, and potentially ghosts (yes - the hotel may indeed be haunted, though we didn't see an apparition in the time we stayed). And it's certainly not the type of hotel you go to if you want to sit in your room and watch television or sit on the internet. There is a lovely lounge downstairs with a fireplace and a bar for chilly, winter evenings. In the summer, there is a veranda off of the second floor with rocking seats and a beautiful view - my husband and I witnessed the full moon rising up over the horizon. The wifi was just fine (granted, I didn't go on vacation to be on the internet) and the town of Kingfield was quite charming, as well. There was a lovely restaurant across the street where we had an amazing dinner. The room we stayed in (queen bed) was basic but fine, and very clean. Huge closet and the bathroom was quite roomy. Can't beat it for the price! In the morning there was freshly brewed, complimentary Carrabassett coffee (brewed up the road). If you're looking for a place to stay near Sugarloaf that has charm and character (and might be haunted!), please check out the Herbert Grand. read more

If there was any lower star rating I could put I would. If it was possible to take away stars from other ratings I would do that too. Honestly the worst hotel experience I've ever had. Place is run down, small, under kept, and managed awfully. On top of all of that I was charged 100 dollars extra for a night I didn't stay that "couldn't be refunded" over an issue that wasn't proved or even should have been a matter of concern. To put it lightly this is the worst place anywhere near sugarloaf and not only are you better off spending you money anywhere else but it would probably be more pleasant to spend the coldest night of the year in your car than this dump. read more

We we're here for Reggae Fest as we couldn't find another place last minute, but it turned out great. We had two of their larger rooms including the honeymoon suite, and even though the hotel is old, it has a rustic charm. The rooms and bathrooms were clean, and best of all, they allow dogs. The owner's mother is the receptionist, and she managed to keep things together despite being fully booked on a heavy partying weekend. The big plus is the location. It's not too far from Sugarloaf, and it's located in a town where everything is within walking distance. Need a medication? There's an RX across the street. Need breakfast? The store next to the gas station is open early and late, and they make sandwiches. Want dinner and a drink? Go across the street to Longfellow's. There is even an acupuncturist and therapeutic massage place that shares a parking lot with the hotel. Prices are very reasonable. read more
