We decided on this restaurant late in the day, and the only reservation was late...we took it but showed up a couple hours early, and with a short wait, they were able to seat us at a nice table on a busy evening. Grateful for that! My wife and I shared two starters, the final and the smoked tofu. We loved everything about both of these dishes in taste and presentation. We also shared the Double-Baked Pudding - a delicate dish sort of like a soufflé made with a nice cheese ambiance about it. Really good flavors and Scottish ingredients for the win. We liked it, though the starters were definitely the stars of the meal for us. We didn't have a cocktail as we were heading out to a whisky bar later (and we have limits ;) but the cocktail menu looked delicious and what we saw being delivered to other tables also had as second guessing those limits we have for ourselves. We're lucky to have stumbled on this spot...off the beaten path, but close enough to the Royal Mile to make it accessible on foot. It's an especially great find for vegetarians and one of the best vegetarian-specific restaurants we've been to anywhere.

It's simple but tasteful. Our server Iona, brought us to our table at the window where we were able to watch the world walk by. Iona was very helpful and guided us to make excellent choices. She's very friendly and professional. For lunch we chose several starters and a main. The starters included the short crust tart that was a delicate pastry filled with clarified onion and cheese. Totally delicious. My wife enjoyed the dinner salad with very fresh veggies. We also chose the lemon braised fennel and David's tofu. We were trying to she appetite for dinner and only ordered one main, the Koftas. They are like an eggplant felafel. They were delicious. However, the one my partner and I went to was a slightly higher end dining experience, with an excellent menu and thoughtful ingredients. First, would definitely recommend getting reservations ahead of time. When we arrived on a Wednesday night for dinner, most of the tables in their somewhat small place were reserved. Fortunately, they were able to get us seated quickly nonetheless, which was much appreciated. Kudos to the friendly hostess, who was busy moving around the space attending to everyone's needs with much finesse. For our dinner, we started with a cheese plate, and then shared a rice dish and haggis as starters. The cheese plate was really superb. The cheeses were cashew based, and it made me realize how much I miss having access to places that know how to do this well. The rice dish featured tofu, mushrooms, some greens, and a couple pickled veggies. The mix of veggies, particularly the pickled ones, was a bit of a surprise, but in a good way. The haggis, which I enjoyed more, was lentil based and had some delicious purple potatoes on the side. While all of this was quite filling, we couldn't resist getting dessert, as carrot cake was on the menu! It was delightfully decadent, with some strawberry sauce drizzled over it. After dining at Henderson's, it was easy to see why they've been a mainstay in Edinburgh for so long. Would certainly recommend as a place for a few friends to come together, a date night, or perhaps just to get a chance of pace from some of the more fast casual vegan options that tend to be more prevalent nowadays.

These chefs use every ingredient in their kitchen, every instrument in their orchestra, to transform a humble soybean into a hearty protein star of a dish. Besides that- the people are usually lovely. As was the case at Hendersons, where the food was top notch and the staff went out of their way to celebrate a special meal and help us find more special spots for the remainder of our time in town. Most recently, I had the english breakfast and it was a hardy plate full of all the essentials. Everything on it was excellent. I was also excited to see that they had a house-made pumpkin spice latte on the menu, even in July! Holy Cow can get very busy (when I was there on a Thursday, one group after another came in.) But they do a good job at seating everyone quickly, as well as taking orders and bringing out food promptly. During my last visit, I was seated inside, but previously I got to enjoy their back patio.
