My dad is over 86 years old and had difficulty completing his fingerprints, but Shelby never rushed him. Instead, she patiently guided him and made sure he felt comfortable and respected. What touched me most was how she took the time to compliment and encourage my dad, which really made his day. Her kindness and positive attitude turned what could have been a stressful experience into a pleasant one. Even if you check in early, you are probably going to be seen precisely at your appointment time. Fill out the renewal application online, print it out and bring it with you. Make sure to have any other necessary paperwork needed. For me, even though my Texas DL was issued initially way back in 1982 and obviously renewed continuously since then, I still had to bring either my birth certificate or my passport (one of those two documents was indeed requested when I was being helped). Renewal fee is $33 -- but cash is NOT preferred. Credit or debit cards are what is requested, so make sure you have one or the other. I remember years ago waiting in line for literally hours at the Grant Road office. When this office opened, it wasn't much better than the older, much smaller office, so I didn't see the improvement. They must have figured out how to streamline applications and renewals, because I was in and out in 15 minutes after my scheduled appointment. There's a kiosk to check in using your phone number or barcode, and forms available if needed. We checked in easily and waited. The office is huge--tons of seating and 40+ desks. Our 12:30 appointment started a little late due to system-wide internet outages (which they announced, offering vouchers to return another day). We decided to stick it out. After switching desks due to a tech issue, the second employee was kind but hard to understand behind the plexiglass. Still, he got everything scanned, fingerprints done, and sent us out for the test. The driving test went smoothly, and my son passed! Funny moment--there was no parking when they returned, so the instructor had him park in a spot reserved for a trooper. The trooper knocked on the window, but the instructor intervened, saving him from a ticket. No one likes going to the DMV, but this experience was efficient, mostly smooth, and positive despite the tech hiccups. Four out of five stars--drop the plexiglass and it might be five.
