Ampersand Bay Resort -- A Lakeside Launchpad for Adventure and Relaxation…read more We stayed at Ampersand Bay Resort the night before -- and the night after -- our big hike up Mt. Marcy. It turned out to be the perfect basecamp for both adventure and recovery. Tucked right on the shores of Lower Saranac Lake, this spot combines rustic Adirondack charm with a sense of comfort and calm that hits just right after 12 hours on the trail. Location, Location... Lakefront You can't beat the setting. The resort sits on 28 peaceful acres along the lake, with stunning views and direct access to the water. We stayed in the Saranac Suite, perched above the on-site Sunset Bistro (more on that later). With three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and five beds, it was a perfect fit for our group of five. The suite includes a full kitchen with a Viking range -- which we mostly used for coffee, post-hike wine, and storing trail snacks. Despite being above the restaurant, the suite was incredibly quiet. We never heard a thing. Mornings and evenings were spent in Adirondack chairs overlooking the lake, unwinding, laughing, and soaking in the view. It's the kind of peaceful, communal space that makes you want to linger. A Rustic Feel -- and That's a Good Thing Let's set expectations: This isn't the Four Seasons or some polished modern lodge -- and that's not the goal. Ampersand Bay delivers a comfortable, clean, and authentic Adirondack experience. Think cozy rather than luxe, with wood accents, nature all around, and yes, a dirt parking lot -- because you're in the mountains, not Midtown. It's charming without pretending to be something it's not, and the vibe fits the setting beautifully. Boating Made Easy One of the best parts of our stay? Taking out a pontoon boat to explore Lower Saranac Lake. The process was seamless, the boat was spotless, and we were out on the water in no time. It was the perfect way to kick off our trip and get into that vacation state of mind. Hospitality That Feels Personal A huge part of what makes Ampersand Bay shine is the people. Brian, the GM, couldn't have been more helpful, welcoming, or genuinely kind. He clearly leads by example, because every single staff member we met was warm and friendly. I always say hospitality starts at the top -- and Brian walks the walk. It's rare to feel so at home at a resort, but that's exactly what we experienced. Sunset Bistro -- A Must-Visit We also had dinner at the Sunset Bistro, located right downstairs. Let me just say -- don't skip this spot. It changed my whole perception of resort dining. The food, wine, service, and views came together for a magical post-hike meal that I'll be thinking about for a long time. You can read my full review on Google or Yelp, but in short: this is a destination-worthy restaurant in its own right. Get a reservation. Final Take If you're planning a trip to Saranac Lake, Ampersand Bay Resort should absolutely be on your shortlist -- if not the only place on your list. It's a rare mix of relaxed charm, thoughtful amenities, unbeatable location, and sincere hospitality. Whether you're climbing a mountain, cruising the lake, or just looking to unplug for a few days, this place delivers.

Rented a boat from them for the day - second time in two years…read more When we got out in the boat, we discovered it had no auxiliary power- radio didn't work, horn didn't work, could not chage phone, etc. We texted the owner to let them know. He apologized and state he would give us back a $100. Never got the money back. Followed up a couple of times. Was told that the electrical system worked fine and that it was operator error but he would send me a check for $100. Never did Would never rent from them again.

My mother loved the food in the dining room, especially the pies. My grandfather loved the three hearty meals per day and the walk through the woods to go to the dining hall. My grandmother loved to sit in an Adirondack chair and look at the lake. Every morning at sunrise, Duane --- a jack of all trades -- would come in and make a fire in our fireplace. I slept on a rollaway bed in the living room, and I was always awake when Duane came in. The morning fire warmed up the water heater that stood behind the fireplace and it took the chill off the room. My grandfather woke up early, and he'd come out of his bedroom and every morning he'd call Duane by the name Larry. My grandfather and I would get dressed and hit the trail early to reach the dining room precisely when it opened. We'd walk up to the porch and a waitress would ring a large bell to let the resort know they were open. We could smell wood burning in the fireplace, bacon frying, coffee brewing, bread baking and pancakes on the griddle. By the time we were finished with breakfast, my parents would arrive with my grandmother and we'd all enjoy the rising sunlight dappling off the lake. When I looked through contemporary photos of the Waldheim today, I swear nothing has changed. Green water glasses in the dining room, canoes from the boat house on the dock, hikes to nearby lakes for picnics, fishing and swimming off docks in front of the cottages, reading lamps in the windows....it's all still there, unchanged and charming. When we stayed in Longview, we chased a huge white catfish around North Bay but we didn't catch it for years. When we did, we took a Kodak black and white photo of it that I still have. We spent hours canoeing around, floating through massive populations of exotic water lilies with massive blooms that were forbidden by law to pick. As we canoed, we would look down and see fish swimming lazily below us. I remember dragon flies darting around us, dipping to the surface and leaving circles like rain drops. At night, we would play cards and read. No tv. Everyone drank, and in those days my father would take an ice pick and break off large chunks of ice from a bin on the front porch. He'd carry the chunks to the bathroom sink and chop it up into cube-sized pieces. The ice had been cut from the lake in the winter and stored between layers of sawdust in the ice house down the road. All of our senses came alive at the Waldheim and, 47 years later, the smells and sunlight and canoeing across a silent bay all come back to me as some of my best memories of childhood.
