First time staying at this hotel and they have a voucher for food and since I wasn't hungry, I got some desserts to try. I'm OBSESSED with chocolate so I had to try the chocolate cake. I very much love the filling on the inside which was a chocolate frosting and loved the chocolate layer on the outside of the cake. The cake part itself was definitely a bit dry. It was flakey when I put my spoon into it. Still good but the filling helped a lot. It did come with some kind of fruit sauce on the side (maybe strawberry?) but I didn't wanna make it a fruity chocolate cake so I dipped a few bites. I also saw they had Bavarian cream churros and since I've never had churros before, I wanted to try those as well. I'm not sure how churros are supposed to be but I was thinking they would be a little soft since they had filling but they weren't. They were on the crunchy side and I that kinda made it hard to taste the cream in the middle. They were good but like I said, not sure if that's how they're supposed to be. They came with a chocolate sauce and it was delicious but that definitely masked the flavor of the churro. Both were $7 each so not too bad. I think I'd get both again if I'm here in the future. My girlfriend and I celebrated our 21-month-versary with a little Asheville date while we were staying in Marshall for a mini getaway. The hostess found our reservation right away and seated us inside--originally I asked for patio seating, but Mother Nature said "absolutely not," so indoors it was. Our waitress was fantastic. I'm about 87% sure her name was Sylvia (according to my girlfriend), but what I do know is that she was a fun, blondish woman from New Orleans with a personality that made the experience even better. We kept it light--just drinks and appetizers to share. I ordered a Coquito, my girlfriend ordered something sweet (the name escapes me, but the smile didn't). Food-wise, we shared the chicken empanadas, yuca fritas, and crispy Caribbean wings. Every bite was a win. We had to make a dramatic exit because we were heading to a walking ghost tour (priorities), so we grabbed dessert to go: pastelitos de guayaba. MY LEAST FAVORITE ROOFTOP IN ASHEVILLE Hemingway's Cuba is on the 4th floor of the Cambria Hotel. It's a spacious bar/restaurant with ample indoor and outdoor seating. I've been here twice now and cannot say I'm impressed. On our most recent visit we ordered chicken empanadas as a snack with our drinks. The chicken was bland with no seasoning or sauce inside, just plain chicken. The empanadas had a sauce drizzled on top and another sauce on the side, but those couldn't quite save the dish, just made it palatable. The food came out before drinks, and we already finished our food before the drinks came! Waitress checked on us and we said we were still waiting on drinks and she had to ask us again what we ordered. She then promptly came with the drinks. Drinks were pretty good, but we stopped after that one round. Our waitress seemed new, so I don't fault her. All in all, with the abundance of rooftop bar options downtown this one is definitely on the bottom of my list. The main plus is how spacious it is, great for large groups! Looking for Cuban cuisine restaurants in Asheville , this might be close but it's definitely not like the real thing . I came here two years ago and it was definitely better than this time . This is why I made a reservation for New Year's Eve . The restaurant wasn't full at all so it was great , we got seated shortly after our reservation close the side window with the views. By 8:00pm dinner time they already had team out of most food , like the full dishes were almost done and there was not much too choose from except vaca frita if you didn't want a sandwich. Great place to celebrate my work anniversary! The rooftop was amazing - view, design and live music. My server Tommy was top notch. Attentive, prompt, knowledgeable and went above and beyond to accommodate request to get to flight on time. The food was exceptional! From my house mojito to the tostones boards which consisted of a variety of toppings that were flavorful with each bite. Impressive! The camarones al ajillo were prepared in a delicious buttery sauce with visible garlic pieces! Hemingway is one of my favorite authors (see previous reviews on places that highlight him), and his name was carried on here. The interior design was also pleasing with a variety of highboys, booths and couches. I enjoyed the view and comfort of the patio seating - also couches and highboys. Given the low averages I'm seeing for this place, I'm glad someone recommended it to me, because I would have otherwise skipped this joint. But we came in for dinner last night and it was basically the perfect meal. Great service from a woman named Ally. Kid food that exceeded expectations; my son got the grilled cheese with fries, and my daughter got the butter noodles with rice, and both were in hog heaven. The ham croquettes were good, but the sauce they were sitting on was even better. My wife and I split the vaca frita entree, with broccolini and the plantain chips...that beef was perfectly seasoned and cooked just right. We chased the dinner with two orders of the churros and I had to rip the "Daddy Share" of that dessert away from the kids to ensure I got enough. And, we didn't really even get the views because we ate at 8:45 PM on a Thursday. If you come during the day, the views are definitely a selling point. I love a good rooftop and I love Cuban food. Even though the Yelp reviews for Hemingway's Cuba aren't great, I was still hoping for the best. I stopped by for dinner and the start was nice but it was all downhill from there. This spacious restaurant has a lovely view of Asheville. There's the patio area and the indoor area. We sat in the indoor area but could still see the views and walked around on the rooftop after dinner. When we're talking service, our waitress was terrible. Bad to the point that it's tough to comprehend how it was even possible. Everything took forever. Ordering our drinks. Ordering our meals. Our drinks were sitting at the bar for long periods of time. She never checked on us during the meal. We had to ask a different waiter for to-go boxes and the check. The restaurant wasn't packed or anything. It was as if she forgot about us or really didn't care about her job at all. I had a couple of cocktails and the ropa vieja---a classic Cuban dish. Outside seating with a view!! Why didn't I go for lunch? This is my only regret. After a day of hiking, it was late, so we looked on Yelp for a place that was open and had food that we liked. We are huge fans of Miami, the Florida Keys, and Cuban food, so we decided to try Hemingway's Cuba and we are so glad that we did. Located on the fourth floor of the Cambria Hotel in Downtown Asheville, the restaurant has a 4,000 square foot beautiful terrace, and you can make reservations online at Open Table. They do offer valet parking, but my husband and I were able to find a place on the street. While we were waiting for our food, I ordered a chocolate martini. It was an amazing drink with shaved chocolate pieces on the top. Also, instead of an entree, I decided to order some sides. I had their congri, which is Cuban black beans and rice, and their maduros, which are fried sweet plantains and an extra side of black beans. All were great, and just the right amount of food. Let's start out with the fact that this is easily the worst Cuban food I have ever had in my life. This food had my white girl wife looking at me like they assaulted my culture. I'm Cuban from Miami. I have eaten at over 100 Cuban spots in my life and have had at least 20+ old Cuban lady's cook for me. Maybe it was marinated in water? -Ropa Vieja: They might as well have punched my abuelita in the face. The food was so bland. I see the onion, I see the pepper, I see the the tomato sauce, I saw some meat.... but I still couldn't find any flavor. -Mariquitas: Overcooked. Golden yellow? Nope. More like tree bark. -Pilar's Double Burger: My son ordered this and no lie... he said it had no flavor as well. I couldn't believe it. My friend and I had a made reservation to eat outside on their rooftop. There were plenty of tables available with a gorgeous view of the city at night. We were met with a friendly hostess and seated right away. For an appetizer we shared the mariquitas and shrimp scampi. The plantain chips were served with a mayo based sauce to dip and a good compliment to the shrimp. We appreciated the garlic bread and was obsessed with the very garlicy and flavorful sauce we soaked up using the bread. Our entrees were the paella and steak with yuka fries and broccolini. The paella is usually offered with chicken, pork and steak but had a special on the seafood version because of a chef visiting the restaurant. As a seafood lover, I of course opted for the special and was not disappointed! Although there was more residual liquid leftover than in a traditional paella, the umami flavors did not disappoint! The pan can hold enough for two people with the muscles, calamari, scallops, clams. Even though we were so full, my friend and I just couldn't pass up on wasting any bit of it. The steak was requested as medium and accurate upon serving. Yuka fries were crispy and as expected. The table next to us ordered the cheese flan and highly recommended us to get it too stating it would be a perfect way to end the meal as it wasn't too filling. It was our first time having a cheese flan as we usually had traditional ones. But, we were so happy we got it! It was creamy and not overly sweet with chunks of pineapple, a caramel brittle and plenty of real whip cream. Overall, wonderful experience with an attentive waiter with helpful recommendations. I grew up in the same neighborhood as Alex Fraga. The owner I have visited Hemingway's, and the only good thing about Hemingway's is the view. I grew up in South Florida. I was born in Cuba. I was turned on to Hemingway's also by another friend of mine that told me that Alex Fraga had opened a Cuban restaurant in Downtown Asheville. I have been there three times and all three times I've been disappointed. The food is awful and the service is awful. The only reason i've gone there three times is because my family that was visiting from Miami insisted in going to a restaurant that had a nice view. Mr. Fraga should listen to the reviews and really look into changing his staff. If you really want authentic Cuban food, you should try Guajiros Cuban food. The owner is a outstanding person and always greet you a smile. The food is excellent. The young man is from Hialeah Florida, which is Cuba North . Mr. Fraga should really consider contacting the young man and offer him a partnership that's the only way that Hemingway's restaurant will survive. To start with the positives the food is excellent here and the views cannot be beat however the service is sub optimal at best. It seems likes it's run by a very young staff who are friendly but untrained. The hostess stand was 3 teenagers who were joking around who would seat us and who would hang out with the "cute boy" who just walked up. Our food was brought out BEFORE our appetizers and then they forgot two appetizers and when they were brought the kid held it literally over my friend's head and said " where am I putting this?!" The menu looked amazing and it was tough to decide, so I opted for their Cubano. The views are nice from here, being higher up in a building, so you can see the mountains off in the distance. Hemingway's large rooftop bar is very attractive for a large group of people, so when my group of seven needed a place to hang out between destinations we gravitated toward Hemingway's. Now, full transparency I hadn't visited prior when it was just me touring Asheville with my local friends because it's reputation proceeds it. It isn't known for being the best destination in town or even a solid spot. Either we got lucky or maybe even better they're improving based on the reviews and experiences I have heard. When we arrived we were there for drinks only so we were directed to the outside bar where a hostess sat us among couches in the middle of the space. It was really rather nice. The couches were comfortable and there was enough space for everyone. Though we were warned prior to order from the bar because we'd never see a waitress we found that not to be the case that night. Our waitress came over shortly after we sat and had our drinks to us in relatively short order considering how busy it was on a Saturday afternoon. The drinks also were very good! After having the bar set very low we were all quite pleasantly surprised how tasty our libations were.
