Knowledge is 5 stars. He's been in practice forever and has a good knowledge base. However... Bedside manner is ZERO stars. Packed waiting room, long waits past scheduled visits. SO many waiting! I was seen 1.5 HOURS past my appointment time. I foster animals, and when I saw him I had 5 in house. Skin cancer topical 5-FU treatment IS TOXIC TO ANIMALS. I wanted something else and he replied, "Get rid of your animals." BH! Saw another Dermatologist after a year putting up with 5FU covered up, washing hands, laundry not to contaminate my animals...and it didn't work at ALL- in fact it spread so now I need surgery. Did NOT return here. There ARE other options for meds and removal of skin cancers you know! Lesions were removed with MOH surgery. Don't recommend this physician, sorry. read more

I highly recommend Dr Philip Hellreich for all skin issues. He is a Dr that you want to do a annual checkup with. Here in Hawaii the sun and outside active life can put some damage to our skin. I know what the drill is when I arrive on site for my inspection. Once in the room I strip down, gown up and not waste his time. He checks me from head to toe military style, efficient and thorough. That is what I like that he really goes over everything. It is really hard to find a doctor of dermatology that does that in a way that I know nothing was missed. read more

My first visit here was a big surprise! It's time-wise way post-Covid, yet this office, it's staff and doc are major hyper paranoid, pro-Covid jab to the max zombies. The waiting room reeks of paranoia. Mask up or else. Their patient questionnaire is intrusive re Covid vaccinations. This doc will NOT see you if you are Covid unvaccinated. They still take your forehead temp. Finally, when you see the doc, he gives a major scripted, stern, pompous lecture about getting your second, third, fourth, etc. Covid jabs! Hello? I had my first appointment today . I'm a nervous patient, and the doctor was excellent. Extremely thorough and has a fun sense of humor to keep it fun and not awkward. I should have read the reviews. Lesson learned. First the appointment setting was fine. Got the reminder call (I appreciate those ) but when I asked the girl for location or directions. She actually 'gasped' or exhaled loud like I'm ruining her mundane task flow for 'reminder calling script'. Then check in: well, how can I put this nicely. They need customer service training ASAP. 1) I said my sons name, and gave her my id & his card. She snapped back, I need his id-I said he's 16. She took the cards 2) filled out papers which were surprisingly short compared to other 'new patient packets' 3) she then yelled across from her window, I need your ID & ins cards. I said I did, she asked the Other clerk. The Other clerk asked 'who did you give it to?' I said YOU! 4) now we wait. If we wait 5 more mins, It'll have been 2 hours in the waiting room.Mind you we're not late, we came 1/2 prior to appt since we're new patients. I'll update this review when we get called in. He told the entire waiting room about how the patient standing in front of him had not been vaccinated and continued by telling the entire waiting room about the patients skin condition. Don't waste your time at this dermatologist office. CONS- 1) Metered Parking ( constant refill feeding meters) 2) if you show up on time even 15 min before, you are still waiting.... don't believe me? Read the other reviews.. 3) when I went for an appt... I was referred for alopecia. My hair was falling out, due to a brain bleed. I was also on low dose chemotherapy pills. -- this doc said... you have a psychological problem. You keep pulling your hair out. First of all, I don't have "trichotillomania"- psychological disorder for pulling hair. That was his first questions when he saw me. 4) his staff comes off really rude. They don't smile. 5) office looks like a furniture wall paper from the 80s. The Dr seems to know what he is doing. However, the front desk staff is EXTREMELY grumpy and unfriendly. Their office is disorganized, the duration of the appointment in comparison to the duration of the wait is not acceptable. When I called to check on my prescription hours after my visit, they were rude, condescending, and dismissive. The staff appears completely overwhelmed with technology and running front desk. Their forms are a mess. Wait times are high and they have no COVID protections in place other than what is absolutely required. The waiting room looks like they run business as usual despite a global pandemic. I had up to five people in there at the same time, in a very small waiting room. They will check your temperature about 15 minutes after you arrive. No warning. They'll just walk up right in your face, no distancing, and shove a forehead touch thermometer in your forehead. Staff all has double N95/surgical on, so it looks like they could care less about patient to patient exposure. Overall, not a good experience. read more

Absolutely unprofessional!! I waited a long time before writing this because I was heated and I wanted to give it time. I would leave no stars if I could. We had a tele-visit for my daughter a few months back because we live on a different island. When talking about our concerns about our daughters SKIN, he asked if she was vaccinated for Covid as she's 10 (It had just been released) I said I wanted to wait a bit as I'm not sure about it yet. TBH I never planned on it. He then proceeded to ask ME if I was vaccinated in a self righteous tone!! Why is that his business? This appointment is not about me! Before I could say anything more, he rolled his eyes and sighed under his mask, then got on his soap box and started preaching at me in a very upset and frustrated tone about why we should be vaccinated while my daughter was sitting right next to me both of us visible on the screen!!! Sooooo completely unprofessional and he was very rude and condescending!! Both my husband and I had to talk over him and raise our voices to tell him, "that's not why we are here!" I just had a very invasive surgery and was advised to wait due to medical issues and had family react to it badly (life threatening). Not that I owe him an explanation. I don't normally write reviews, but good ones. This was too much. He was a total jer*. I called the receptionist and told her what happened and why I wasn't going to schedule a follow up appointment. She was so apologetic. I think it's time for him to retire. Both my husband and I were flabbergasted at how rude and unprofessional he was! Oh! My appointment time was at 3:15pm, didn't get seated until 4:30pm & was practically shoved out by the doctor after a 5 minute visit with him. The front office staff were helpful & kind. But as soon as you get to the back & see the "doctor", the FIRST words that came from his mouth were, "Okay, you're 21 years old & you're vaccinated with no booster, do you know how dangerous you are to a lot of people?". Uh, excuse me? I came here for a DERMATOLOGIST visit. At that point I look at his resident intern & even they were frozen. Seemed like it wasn't a learning experience for them, i didn't even get their name. Then we move onto talking about my allergies which the "doctor" seemed to not believe I had. I tried telling him I had VERY sensitive skin & have tried some things he prescribed but he completely brushed me off. So, I go home & try these creams yet again & my skin literally burns off. My cheeks are raw. He didn't listen to me. That's the first thing a doctor should do is listen & that's exactly what he didn't do. Don't waste your time & energy with this so called "doctor". Incredibly rude doctor and not to mention how unprofessional they are. I came in because I'd been having hormonal break outs and I'm 30. I said "well it's not bad enough for accutane but it's definitely hard to deal with" he then goes. "Well it's all over your face. You have acne all over your face, it's not one or two zits it's like you got one here there" and he contributed to point out all the zits on my face. It was a horrible feeling. I know i have acne and that's the issue I came in to try and solve. He prescribed some something that didn't work. I felt horrible about myself when I left. He also yelled at me for taking my mask off to show him the acne! Like I obviously need to remove my mask to show him. I have never had such a horrible doctor experience in my life. He talked down to me like I was a child and definitely because I was a woman. You can see this man has very little respect for women. I hope they fire him. He's too old to be working anyways. One of the worst doctor experiences I've had. I had paid cash at another dermatologist that I loved (who unfortunately doesn't take my insurance) to check several concerning spots on my face for skin cancer and she said I better find a dermatologist that takes my insurance since after looking at them she said they should do a biopsy and might lead to expensive treatment. So I got a referral to Dr. Hellreich and traveled from another island to get there. He was crazy about the COVID mask and vacc stuff (years after it was over) as previously mentioned in other reviews, but also had terrible bedside manner, berated me for how "tan" I was (I'm caucasian, but lived in Hawaii my whole life and work outdoors for a living), barely glanced at the spots on my face before telling me it was definitely not cancer and didn't need a biopsy. The weirdest part was that he said he likes to do a full body check and had several patients die from skin cancer on their anus so he wanted to examine my the area around my anus. Ummm, I came in to check spots on my face........ no thank you, I'll take my chances! The guy is like 80 and should probably retire. I was totally weirded out and uncomfortable the entire time. He did begrudgingly burn one spot off under my eye after I pushed it, since it was the most concerning. I'm just hoping it isn't cancer since he was unwilling to do any biopsies. The patient had been waiting for this appointment for over 2 weeks. We talked to the staff twice on the phone. We showed up on the day of the appt early to fill out the required papers. We were told the doctor does not see patients without a vaccine ID or a test. This was the first time they mentioned this information. The patient could get a negative test and be seen by this doctor if the staff would inform us on the phone--a discriminating doctor with unprofessional staff. Healing is not a priority. read more

And my longest relationship goes to: Dr. Hellreich of Kailua Dermatology Associates! Yay! Yes, it's true, I've been seeing Dr. H for over 20 years. That's the longest I've ever seen anyone. Too bad he's already married. With that being said, I must note that Dr. H looks exactly the same as when I first met him over 20 years ago. That's a good skin doctor! I can only tell that he's older because he has more hair growing out of his ears. Yes, I've started going to him as a teenager with pimples and I'm still going to him because I'm an adult with pimples. It's a tough life being an adult with acne. Darn genetics and hormones! But seeing Dr. H helps keep my acne in check and I'm usually pimple free. And in case if you're wondering, I did try to go off the meds for a bit, and you know what? I became a gigantic pimple! It was so gross! I'll spare you the details. Seriously, though he's been on the best doctors list numerous times. The only gripe is that sometimes the wait does take a while because he tries to see everyone. Which I guess is good for him. So if you have an appointment, arrive 15 minutes early so that you will be seen on time. Because even if you are 5 minutes early, your appointment may get backed up to half an hour. And if you're late to your appointment, expect to wait an hour. The staff really tries to speed things up, but sometimes one back up backs everything up, so be early!! And parking is in the municipal lot or on the street. I always put an hour in my meter to be safe. And yes, they are accepting new patients. So if you are having any skin problems, you can go over an see Dr. H. I told Dr. H that I kept having this rash when ever I ate shrimp and I went to the allergist to try to clear it up, but nothing happened. Mind you, I ate shrimp before and never had a reaction, it just happened suddenly! Told Dr. H about it, he prescribed some meds and it was gone! Thanks Dr. H! I think Dr. H wants to retire, but he hasn't found the right person to take over his office. Who ever takes over his office, though better keep me pimple free. I can't wait to grow out of this phase, but it looks as if I'll never grow up!! read more

Everyone here was so, so nice. I came in a nervous wreck because I was so upset about my skin, which was covered in cystic acne for years. Dr. Hellreich shot it to me straight and was patient when I expressed how much I did not want to do medication/incorporate a bunch of new topicals into my regimen. He was very matter-of-fact and I left the office thinking my skin would never clear. I don't often trust doctors but I followed his exact instructions and MY SKIN HAS BEEN BEAUTIFUL EVER SINCE! I researched the internet and found Dr. Philip Hellreich (dermatologist in Kailua). First of all, I went to the wrong building and called his staff. They told me no problem and come on over. The staff was so friendly that I felt I've been going there for years. Then enters Dr. Hellreich. What a hoot! He told me more information than most of my doctors in 10 years. Went there from 2011-2016. I waited LONGER in the office and finding parking (half an hour each) than it took for me to be seen. Usually for me it was a five-minute appointment, only following one hour to fight for parking and waiting time in the offices. I finally switched to Dr. Luria nearby. Firstly, I don't like to talk bad about anyone, especially Doctors. Doctors are essential to us. I do appreciate doctors and their workers/nurses. But my experience today should be noted by others. I've been getting weird bug bites, so I called the Doctor's office. They were kind enough to fit me in 30 minutes later. The front desk lady was nice on the phone. The Dr. came in after a 45 minute wait, and I don't think he sanitized his hands - upon entering the room, or leaving. First thing he said was, "OK, give me a quick overview of what's happening". (Trying to rush me). Then he asked me to drop my pants to inspect my genitals. I told him I wasn't comfortable with that. He tried telling me again to drop my pants to check for scabies, and I insisted I wasn't comfortable with that, and there was no need to inspect me there. He let out a sigh frustration in response. So we continued. He spoke at me, not with me, at me, for about 15 minutes (roughly the length of my visit). I have read some reviews online and others can claim to this as well - The Dr. told me my issue was stress, possibly neurological. He also told me to check for bed bugs. He tried incessantly convincing me I was stressed, to which I replied, "No doc, I was completely relaxed until you walked in the room. I have had a pit in my stomach for the entire 15 minutes", and I told him how uneasy he made me feel. When I went to leave I realized I left my water canteen in the room, so I turned back to go get it. The girl at the front desk politely reached over the counter to gave it back to me. Upon leaving the building I went to take a sip or water. I immediately felt and tasted a textured, scented, like lip balm and cream in my mouth. I was shocked and disgusted. I know he's treating patients all day. God only knows what it is on my canteen. While in the waiting room I heard a Mother of two adult boys she was with speaking loudly about the Dr. putting cream on her son's back and how great it was. So I called the Dr. office back immediately (I didn't want to go back in and cause a stir) and the older lady at the front desk told me she didn't know what I was talking about. No apology, no "I'm sorry", nothing. So I insisted on leaving my number with her and asked for a callback to find out what this cream was on my canteen. I waited 40 minutes and no call. So I called them. The front desk lady says "who's this?", I explain my situation again to her and she hands the phone to the young lady at the desk who gave me my canteen. I explained my situation now yet again and asked her if she knew who was handling my canteen - she said no, but that she was "so sorry about that!", and that my prescription was ready for pick-up. Great. But she did tell me she sprayed down my canteen with alcohol (I have never seen disinfectant applied like this). *Why anyone would without permission 'disinfect' my water canteen-that I drink from- is beyond me*. Still upset with little answers, I thanked her. I also asked her if I had anything to worry about, like vomiting or getting sick, being that this substance is now on my lips and possibly in my body. She replied - *"If you start throwing up, drive yourself to the emergency room immediately".* That made me feel really confident! Over an hour later, after brushing my teeth vigorously and using mouthwash I still couldn't get the sensation off my lips. At this point there is now dried, crusted cream on my canteen, even after intense scrubbing with dish soap. I'm disgusted and appalled. So I call back insistent on speaking to Doctor Hellreich himself. On the third attempt to find out what substance this was that I possibly ingested, I called again and spoke with the older lady at the front desk. She didn't know who I was at first (you would think she would know me by now), and then gave the phone to the young lady. I told the young lady that even after scrubbing with dish soap and a brush there was crusted cream on my canteen. I also told her it was clear to me this wasn't alcohol/disinfectant. Besides, I've never heard of spraying disinfectant alcohol. I asked to speak with the Doctor. She politely told me the Doctor had already left the office to go home for the day. I tried questioning her some more, because this didn't add up. That's when Dr. Hellreich abruptly came on the phone and started arguing with me - fast paced, loud volume arguing. We had it out over the phone for a solid 90 seconds before I had to hang up. Full on verbal warfare. I didn't at any point name call or use foul language, but I was pissed. At some point during the argument Dr. H. said this: "Worst case is it's antiseptic cream, and that's non fatal," and "I really think you're over-reacting here", and "I don't know who touched your canteen", and "I don't know what cream is on your canteen". Over 24 hours have passed since my visit with Dr. Hellreich and there's still cream residue on my canteen AND lips. ZERO STARS. read more

Dr Hellreich was able to find a combination that worked on clearing my acne. But don't expect him to take long with you. I always feel like he is rushing thru my appt just to get to the next one. The wait time is so long and the receptionist are NOT friendly at all. It's an older staff and I think they all should retire because they don't look happy to be there at all and it shows. When you call about something every time they have been rude to me on the phone. I thought about telling him how bad his front office is but there's rarely a minute that you get a chance to talk. read more

I am very unhappy with how the receptionist treated me over the phone. She would not give me ANY information about services and pricing -- only saying that the doctor needed to see me and she could not tell me anything. I asked how much a peel is, for example, and "I don't know" is all she could tell me. It felt as though I needed to walk in the door and pay $100 just to find out if the doctor could do anything for acne scars. Just give me an idea, would you? I have red scarring around my chin and forehead from past blemishes, and I have tried every expensive cream, serum, scrub and mask on the market. Unfortunately, after several years, I have not seen any improvement in the discoloration or brightness of my skin. So after a friend of mine told me that I should look into a peel, retinol cream, or laser resurfacing I decided it was worth a try. I have never seen a dermatologist before, so I do not know what kinds of services are offered and what kind of price rage to expect. So, I decided to call a few offices in the area and ask about the treatments that could be offered by their office and pricing. I understand that the doctor cannot diagnose or treat an issue without seeing me in person, but before I come in for a $80-$100 consultation I would like to know what kinds of things would be available for my issue. I would appreciate being provided with SOME information...in order to make an education decision about where to take my health concerns and business. Very, VERY disappointed with the service provided by the front desk staff in this office. The young woman left me with an unpleasant taste in my mouth that leads me to feel this medical practice is unprofessional, does not care about the concerns of the patient, and is driven by $$$. She was more than happy to get me off the phone instead of remedying the situation even though I was rather frustrated with the service. read more

I can't speak highly enough of Dr Hellreich and his staff. Super knowledgeable, straightforward and friendly I really appreciate the care they have provided. He not only approached my psoriasis from a clinical viewpoint but also offered dietary suggestions to heal my body from the inside out. He was the first doctor (out of 4) that warned me of what my condition encompasses and how it isn't just a skin but whole immune problem that can affect so many other areas of my health. It is very difficult to be objective when you are met by office people who are dismissive and disrespectful. You walk in the door and they ask for your insurance copay before you even see the doctor. Then you have a 90 + minutes wait in an extremely crowded office. I am not going back. read more

It's not that he doesn't know his business and I do appreciate that he accepts seeing everybody, but as for having skin cancer incised away? He cuts more area than necessary. My other skin concerns were responded to in a condescending manner, as though I should have no more concern for them than he does. First of all this guy has a very outdated waiting room for someone that claims to be "Americas best Dermatologist" you literally have to wait over 45-to 1 hour from the time of your appointment before they call you into the room. Then once he comes in he is like some fricken punk that comes in and tries to say no to all your suggestions. I have been seen this guy btw since i was 17 years old. I am 25 now!!!! i had moderate acne and scaring from years prior. wanted professional help. He literally had me on every antibiotic you can name for this and I was on it for over 2 fricken years then finally my stomach took a turn! ever since the last antibiotic he gave me It caused serious stomach problems that I have to now deal with because of it. And who the hell puts someone on antibiotics for fricken 2 years??? are u crazy? i was just as stupid for taking them and not realizing this prick was out to make more and more doe on me. But I was fair w/this guy i stayed loyal and tried to do what he suggested to me month in and month out. then finally i told him listen if you don't put me on this medicine i am done seeing u. sure enough didn't put me on it. i went to someone else and the 1st visit they put me on the one that actually works from the start no bs!! i swear u need to retire my friend ur outdated methods and scam artist ways won't work on all ur exsisting customers eventually they will leave your small office and go some where that will fix them from the start punk! read more
