Mason’s Sweet Shoppe

Mason’s Sweet Shoppe

This is a cool little place that serves great ice cream in Union Grove near the I-77 interchange…read more The ice cream selection is great, they will mix flavors for you too. The service is friendly and efficient, and the shop offers both indoor and outdoor seating. The seating indoors is limited, but there's several picnic tables outside. The prices are reasonable!

We had been wanting to visit for a while as other mason jar ice cream joints are usually at the beach or in large cities. Mason's has a bright and clean small interior with maybe four tables. There was no outdoor seating. The chairs they had were metal chairs that are not the friendliest for plus size people as they can be narrow and tight on the sides, but these were not as bad as most. Also, there was no physical menu that showed pictures of each of the mason jar sundaes, just the descriptions. They did have television screens showing pictures of each sundae, but you had to wait for each picture to pop up throughout the slideshow. The pricing for the mason jar sundaes is $10 each and the price does include the mason jar to take home. Compared to the prices at similar shops in larger cities and beaches, those tend to run $15 or more. We got the Razzle Dazzle, Cookie Monster, a scoop of Oreo ice cream & a scoop of coconut fudge ice cream. The scoops of ice cream were both flavorful, creamy & full of mix-ins. The Razzle Dazzle is raspberry chocolate ice cream with a slice of cheesecake on top. Cheesecake is one of our favorite desserts and this slice was absolutely amazing! The Cookie Monster was topped with two cookies that were just okay. The cookies were cakey and chewy. Both mason jar sundaes came in Styrofoam bowls so it would not drip on the table. We were not able to finish both sundaes even being shared between multiple people! They also give you plastic bags to take the jars home in.

Yelp needs to add another 5 star option, for those businesses that are outstanding in every single…read moreway. Flavia's would definitely rate 10 stars. This pastry business is located in a tiny cottage, think She Shed, on a small side street in downtown Blowing Rock. Everything was nicely labeled and priced but there were names I hadn't heard before. Julie was very informative and kindly answered all of our, "Ooooh, what's that?" questions. We were torn between a couple of items, so like any sensible person, we bought both. She told us to eat them at room temperature for best enjoyment. She said the "Crème" is homemade puff pastry with a thick layer of Mousseline Cream. That means they take their crème patisserie and then add silky butter. Is your mouth watering yet? We each got a Crème and a Cream Puff. We ate the Crème first and sweet mother of all things delicious, it was otherworldly. We immediately prayed that the Puff would have the same filling. It did. When we go back next year, I'll be getting a treat for everyday we are there. TIP #1: Beware Donna. She was in the next store Serves You Right. She offered to take our pink pastry box. Everyone in BR is so nice, we thought she was being helpful so we could shop. Then we saw the humorous glint in her eyes! Pastry Thief! LOL! Donna and Karen told us that Julie is the daughter and her mother is from Germany. The mom makes everything in Hickory and they drive it up fresh every day. They raved about everything! TIP #2: They are closed every Wednesday, so plan ahead.

It wasn't the best macaron I've ever had, but it was certainly the biggest haha. Service was fast & friendly; ambiance isn't really applicable, Flavia's itself doesn't have seating. Street parking is free in Blowing Rock, I believe. 7.5/10 would recommend!
