Helen teaching us how to weigh ingredients
Em V.

Loved my first cooking class with Helen! I was in her first-run of doing the pâte à choux course and had an amazing time and learned so much! Helen started the class with a demo and thoroughly explained the process, what each step of the dough should look like, different equipment to use, and troubleshooting. I had always been intimidated when recipes called for weighing ingredients, but Helen showed us affordable scales we could buy on Amazon and how to use them and it is SO EASY. After her demo we split into 2 groups of 3 (6 total participants) and made our own doughs (with Helen watching and correcting as we went along), baked them, and then filled them. Helen also taught us how to make a pastry cream (!) and chocolate ganache, and then had other fillings ready for us to put in our finished puffs - a red bean and vanilla pastry cream, baked fig and blue cheese marscapone, salmon pâté, poached pear and pastry cream, and a traditional eclair. Then we got to eat them! This whole class was well orchestrated and very informative - Helen is a wonderful teacher. She also had everything ready for us - aprons for everyone, ingredients and utensils out, etc. - and a printout of all recipes for the dough and fillings, as well as written instructions for troubleshooting, recommendations for shopping for the ingredients in the area, and other helpful tips. She followed up after the class with an electronic copy of the printout, links to all of the non-standard equipment we used (so we could purchase them on our own), and even helpful articles on topics we discussed while eating our treats (like what the best sous-vide machine is). Helen offers gift certificates so I will definitely be asking for these for upcoming holidays and birthdays - I can't wait to try her other classes!

Because of Helen, I can now cook. No really, it's the only reason. I am now more popular.

There is good and bad for this simple purchase, I will begin with the good: I needed just one…read morespecific dish towel to add to a housewarming gift and placed the order online for pickup over the rainy Memorial Day weekend (this is how much I needed this $18 towel!). I received the notification that it was ready for pickup about 45 minutes later and off I went to the store. Three employees were at the register when I arrived on Sunday May 24th around noon: Basil (great name!), another guy and a young woman (brownish hair, a little below the shoulders with NO personality at all). Very friendly Basil went to the back to get my dish towel while Ms. No Personality scowled about needing my ID because telling my name and exactly what I was picking up was not enough. That is fine (note that I also offered to show Friendly Basil the bar code for pick-up from my email, but he probably had gotten my order ready because he knew all about it), but when I pulled out my license I noticed that she barely looked at it...... it's as if she just wanted to be aggravating for a moment. Well, she was. Here is an idea for her (and the store manager): "may I please see your ID" would be a REALLY polite thing to say! Or just that barcode, which I did just offer to show. 5 stars to Basil, 0 stars to the obnoxious girl

When my husband and I first decided to find a personal chef we thought "maybe this will help, we…read morecan't keep eating out, it's killing us." Neither of us really knew what a personal chef service looked like. We love cooking but we didn't/don't have time during the week to cook. We hoped we'd get more vegetables into our diet at a minimum. That not eating out would mean less of the white devils (sugar, salt). I reached out to The Skinny Beet in a frenetic and desperate state last December. Since they've entered our lives the sun is shining, the clouds have parted and Mondays are happy (re: they are miracle workers). We have been a weekly client with The Skinny Beet for almost 3 months now. At the end of 1 month we reached out to them and shared a list of each positive benefit directly or indirectly related to hiring them as personal chefs. I would like to share this list with you (reader of my review): 1. My husband and I spend more time together. 2. We portion control better. 3. We work out more (have time to work out). 4. We feel better: less groggy, less irritable, more energy. 5. The food they make tastes flavorful, wholesome and satisfying. We get to eat our favorite cuisines with less of the sugar/salt and more grain/vegetable variety than what we know how to cook. 6. We waste less. 7. The brain space we wasted thinking about what to eat, what to cook, when to go pick things up, crap-I-forgot-an-ingredient --- Poof! Gone. Which, working full time while part time grad school, any and all brain space I can allocate to my work is priceless for me. From Week One: Flexibility with schedule and menu planning was made easy for us - We come home and our kitchen tools and pans lovingly (and somewhat expensively) acquired over time are clean - There are delicious dishes made with quality ingredients ready for devouring in the fridge. We are so grateful for the difference The Skinny Beet has made in our quality of life. Seriously, I wasn't kidding: Miracle Workers.

Well in just a couple hours we were able to cover SO much ground. From making a delicious salsa and homemade chips, to a steak and a chicken, even farro with caramelized onions. Not only did I learn tons of REALLY helpful skills that I've already been implementing, but I had delicious food that lasted me for a handful of meals THAT I HELPED MAKE! They brought all their own ingredients and left my kitchen completely spotless (possibly cleaner than how they found it) I am so thankful to these two and I look forward to our next lessons.
