Amy is a gem. We were running late, but she was very flexible and upbeat. She even stayed late with us, I was so impressed. We did a Saturday night Sip and Sew, with 3 of us as completely beginners and 1 experienced sewer. She catered her lessons to each of us. We had the option to make a tote bag or pillow. I went for the tote, with a long handle to wear as a cross-body bag. We certainly got a bit buzzed with the sipping part, but she was so patient with us. I hope to go back and learn more about sewing, what a fun new skill to learn! One location note, we thought it was at the Hipstitch place on Spencer Street, but found out the class was at the retail store at 1280 Washington St. Which is very close, like less than a minute from Spencer St. Our fault for not reading the email thoroughly, made us really late. This review is for hipstitchers Wellesley -- not Newton. Business refuses to answer a phone call or numerous emails asking to cancel a class 22 days away for a credit due to a child being in school . Only response was 10 minutes after booking a course asking to apply the new customer 10% credit only to be told "no we can't do that. We will apply it to you next class". Refusal to respond at all to any other communication. Same company that will tell you you can't get a credit if you don't cancel with enough leeway. Hypocritical and terrible customer service. Will never book a class again. read more

Went here for a birthday party and experience was amazing! It was my first time stitching but the instructors there were really kind and helped me stitch. Food was great, and the place looks adorable! I recommend this place if you want to enroll in a stitching class or camp, and even have a birthday party here. read more

What a neat place, I had a sewing lesson at their Brookline location today and had a great time! I was the only person there, and I got a very personalized 1.5 hour lesson on how to make a cute zippered pouch and they covered all the sewing basics. I love that they really tailor it around what you're looking for, I was very satisfied with my experience. The workers there were so sweet and helpful. They also had a nice selection of yarn in their shop, I'll definitely be returning. read more

Then got an email that the price is double what they had posted so opted to cancel my order. After that got another email that my order had shipped and I don't see a refund on my card yet? VERY DISAPPOINTED with the 10 face masks that I ordered online for which I paid $103.94. Not only did I confirm over the phone that I wanted a variety of feminine prints (floral, hearts, paisley), but I also noted as such in the comments section online. I ended up with 1 ugly tan/brown print, 4 gross hospital blue prints, and 5 pale peach prints. read more

Hipstitch is a girls dream. I brought our Girl Scout troop there to see a company owned and run by a woman and have a hands on experience with sewing. Nicola was fantastic with the girls. She was informative, answered all their questions and showed them some fun sewing activities. The girls left her beautiful and hip shop with some really cute projects. I would highly recommend Hipstitch and many of the girls asked about camps and classes after we left. read more

I have always wanted to sew. I am not really crafty, but I think it's a really important skill to have. When I received a sewing machine for my birthday, I needed to get my butt in gear!! I found Hipstitch from a simple Google search. They do all sorts of classes such as a Mother and Daughter class and the Sip and Sew. For a nominal fee, you show up, drink wine and make a pillow from all the adorable fabrics from the store. Nicola and her helper did a quick demonstration of the machines and then let us get to work. I was so surprised at the outcome, I didn't do a terrible job!! I had a lot of fun meeting lots of new people and learning a new skill. I am going to bring my machine in for a private lesson in a few weeks. I posted my pillow on Facebook, and now all my friends want to try! read more

I was really excited for my daughter to go to Hip Stitch but we won't go back. I walked in 15 minutes early for pick up after she had a half day there. I'm not sure if the people working there owned the business but I doubt it. First, I walked in the small room and was not even acknowledged that I was there. No "hello, oh thanks, you must be Sarah's dad. Come in, hey Sarah, come show your dad what you made today. Sarah, did really well and had a great snack, She also made a terrific, pillow and has a real eye for blah blah, blah." nope, I was standing there for 5 minutes, no-one said hi. Finally, I went over to my daughter and finally at 1pm took my daughter and got her coat. We stood by the door and I said loudly, "well, I guess we don't need to say hi or bye to anyone". We turned around and walked out. They didn't even ask if I was Sarah's dad. It just felt cold and a bit strange. Maybe its just me as someone that doesn't interact with "Sewing people" but they don't exude customer service. Anyway, not a big deal, we will teach her at home but I thought it would be good to have her do a class. My gut says she had a bit of direction but was left alone to figure it out. Good luck to the business but they will have to remember that customer service is a huge part of any business. I hope this was a bad day and not the norm. read more

My 3 girls have been going to Hipstitch since they were 5-6. My oldest has since lost interest, but my 8 year old twins still enjoy it. What I love about it is the ability to book just one or two days over a week-long school break. I wish other vacation camps offered this. read more

Just wanted to follow up to say that the owner offered to pay for my sitter, but then she din't follow up and actually send a check. So I'm still out the sitter costs. I booked a class at JoAnn Fabrics, and it was excellent. I loved the instructor and personalized attention. I would highly recommend you look there if you're looking for a good class. They were organized and didn't lose my reservation/overbook me with a birthday party like Hipstitch. read more

My seven year-old daughter first discovered Hipstich through a birthday party of a classmate. She LOVED it, coming home with a pillow and a bookmark! Very unusually for her, as she is quite shy and tends to stick close-to-home, she asked to go back there over school vacation this spring. I signed her up for one morning, with a friend, thinking that was all she'd want to do. But no -- she ended up insisting on going three mornings (9 am - 1 pm), despite having to get up early to get there. (She likes her beauty sleep.) She even felt so comfortable there that she asked to go when a friend couldn't join her; this was an incredible accomplishment for which I feel very grateful to Nicola. By the end of the week, my daughter had made a pillow, two stuffed animals, a tote bag, a headband, and a backpack with a pocket. She felt utterly competent with a sewing machine, searching my old one out and lecturing me about how to set it up and use it (for the first time in 20 years). I was amazed at her confidence and comfort level. We are definitely signing up for their summer camp! There's also a nice cafe just down the hall, where the kids go for snack during their break, or where parents can hang out and work (good, free wi-fi). Another nice thing is that Nicola's totally flexible about how many days you sign up for, and makes sure that kids don't repeat the same project even if their attendance is sporadic. It's incredibly convenient for those random school holidays (e.g. teacher workdays). read more

What a fabulous place!!! We were staying in Newton for a week this summer so I signed my daughter up for 4 days of camp. She knew how to do a simple stitch by hand and had used a toy sewing machine but she was basically a beginner. On day one she came come with a pair of shorts and a pillow. Day two an apron, a stuffed animal, another pillow. Day three A DRESS!! I was blown away. She had the most wonderful time. The counselors were lovely and warm. What a fantastic experience!! My 12 yrs old daughter had her birthday party here with 9 friends. The girls got to pick out their fabrics to make a small decorative pillow with their initials. They received a quick tutorial and then started sewing. Each girl had their own sewing maching so there was no waiting. The girls loved their pillows and all had a great time. The HipStitch Team were friendly and patient. I would recommend this place for birthday parties for those who want to do something original. Horrible, horrible, horrible business. Paid $65 for 9-1 camp session which they were to take the students for ice cream I assumed the ice cream cost was included in the outrages price of $65 for 4 hours but it was't and all the girls got ice cream except my daughter because I didn't send her with cash assuming the ice cream was included in the price. She was the ONLY child not to receive an ice cream and was very upset and cried. You would have though they would have just paid for an ice cream for her and I would gladly have paid them back. But no instead they make a poor 9 year old little girl feel horrible and watch everyone else get an ice cream while she say there the only one without one. Then my babysitter had a family emergency so I had to leave work in Westborough to pick up y daughter so I rushed there 45 minutes away knowing I would be a few minutes late I called Hip Stich and explained the situation and I was getting there as fast as I could and would just be a few minutes late and the owner VERy ruddy said to me if you are 1 minute past 15 minutes late I will charge you $20. I was like what? I am on my way and hopefully won't be 15 late and why would you charge $20? that a bit much don't you think can't she just sit there and wait. I am on my way. She said NO and if you don't pay you won't be allowed to come back to Hip Stich and hung up on me. So I got there at 1:18 (3 minutes late) and the girls that work there tried to get me to pay the $20 and I was like no way maybe I would have if your boss/owner/manger or whoever she was, wasn't so rude to me and hung up but now you won't get a dime and they are like you are 3 minutes past the 15 minutes we are owed the $20. I said no your not getting the $20 and don't worry we won't come back. That's when my daughter told me how EVERYONE got ice cream but her. What a cruel , mean and very NOT children friendly organization. I am extremely into customer service I run several stores for a fashion boutique company and if any of our employees (an owner/ manger would NEVER) spoke to a customer like that they would be fired. So for the owner to speak to a parent on the phone the way she did she should be shut down. I have heard wonderful recommendations for NEWTON SEWING STUDIO. I urge you as parents if you are looking for a sewing studio/camp/after school program go to NEWTON SEWING COMPANY. Don't give your money to an organization like hip stitch that is rude to parents, hangs up on them tries to charge $20 for being 3 minutes late and not buying an ice cream for the only child that didn't have money (again which I would have gladly paid back) and made her cry. What a horrible experience that was suppose to be fun and make my child happy turned into a nightmare. I wouldn't step foot in their door for all the money in the world. Oh and the owner sent me a threatening email to not patronize her organization again. Comical like I ever would. I will instead make sure everyone knows what an unprofessional, rip off , mean to children organization that is called " Hip Stich at 1276 Washington Street in West Newton Ma) It says nothing on their website for a late fee charge OR to bring money in for your child to buy ice cream. As a parent I urge you not to give this organization your hard earned money/ You can tell they are struggling as a business to try and force a parent to pay $20 for being 3 minutes last and not buying the only child out of the group and ice cream and there are reasons why organizations like them struggle and they are obviously not going to be able to sustain their business if the run it the way they do now. read more

HipStitch was great! I went with my sister and mom as a Christmas gift and we had such a good time. I'm not the best when it comes to sewing but my pillow came out looking like a pillow so can't complain there! We had a couple different patterns to choose from and there was a lot of fabric and thread colors available which was great. The staff was very friendly and accommodating as well. They even helped with a raffle prize for a fundraiser we are planning next week. I would definitely go back with friends next time I'm in the area. read more

We just had our daughter's 8th birthday party at Hipstitch. It was fabulous. 13 girls and 1 boy were completely excited and engaged in the project for an hour and a half. The staff was nice and patient and the whole place is colorful and fun! It was also so easy - they even make the goody bags for you and the kids have their project to take home with them. Bryan is particularly sweet and just fun to be around. Loved the party - highly recommend it! read more

We had a birthday party at Hipstitch for my daughter who was turning seven. It was fantastic! Nicola was organized, helpful and fun. The studio is clean and beautifully designed. Absolutely loved my experience! Went on a Sat. night with a friend. It was a small class and everyone had fun. The owner was so sweet that she even embroidered my daughters name on the pillow!! Highly recommend for a girls night away or for a mother daughter experience as they do both! She even was talking about a baby shower they had just done. The young women who work here do not know how to handle children or even seem to like them. They overreact to mistakes and take it upon themselves to teach children "discipline" with archaic practices such as making kids sit in a corner. The owner had no interest in hearing any complaints and blindly defended her staff. Our child will never attend again. read more
