After getting a few quotes for our deck project, Heilman Deck & Fence really stood out. Andy came by and actually walked me through the whole process -- not just what he'd do, but why he'd do it a certain way. He explained where it made sense to invest a little more and where we could cut back without sacrificing quality. No pushy sales pitch, no checkbox quoting -- just someone who clearly knows his craft and cares about doing the job right. I had done some research ahead of time and knew my existing deck had a structural quirk that would matter during the rebuild -- Andy was the only one of the three contractors who caught it. That made the decision easy. His quote wasn't the cheapest or the most expensive, but it was fair and came backed with great reviews and a clean WA contractor's license (which, shockingly, not all of them had). That sealed the deal for us. We ended up completely rebuilding two decks using TimberTech PVC -- a smaller 10'x10' one, and a 26'x12' deck that's 20 feet in the air with two staircases and a landing. The whole project took about 3.5 weeks from demo to final touches. Andy's CAD drawings were spot-on. When surprises came up (like discovering the house's floor joists ran in the opposite direction), Andy just handled it -- added a beam, footings, and posts without delay or extra cost. Same deal with a couple small punch list items at the end (a dinged downspout, some siding, trim details). No fuss, no runaround -- his crew just showed up and made it right. The build crew was great to work with -- friendly, respectful, and meticulous. They kept the site clean and were clearly proud of their work. You could see it in the precision of the cuts and the fact that everything was perfectly straight, square, and level. Even the more delicate custom cuts -- like a half rip-cut board to fit under the house -- were nailed with crazy accuracy making it look like the boards extend under the house. Bottom line -- I'd 100% recommend Andy and his team at Heilman to anyone in the Seattle/Eastside area. If I ever need more deck or fence work (though this deck will probably outlive me), I won't even bother getting other quotes. These guys are the real deal. read more

We started a 6-8 week deck project through a different contractor and it was a nightmare that dragged on for 6 months of not ordering materials when we started, ordering the wrong materials, delays with subcontracted workers not showing up and ultimately building things wrong and not up to code. We asked a few companies about finishing up our project and Andy, Amanda, and Team were happy to help. They provided valuable insight on things our old contractor missed, they communicated clearly and consistently. Our deck turned out absolutely beautiful. The craftsmanship is impeccable. I would recommend Andy and his wonderful crew (Tim and Matt) to anyone that needs a beautiful, top quality, well-built deck. Everything about the experience was fantastic. During the process of accepting his bid I changed my mind a few times on some of the details and he was very patient and pleasant about all of my questions and changes. He is very easy to talk to and work with. From our first meeting when Andy came out to do the estimate I was so impressed with his obvious knowledge of deck construction and he explained all of the different aspects of choosing decking materials. We ended up going with Azek decking with Timber Tech composite railing with matching Azek drink rail for the top rail and it is just gorgeous! I couldn't be more pleased with it. My wife and I decided to have our back deck re-done. We are diligent in our purchases and thorough in our researches. We scheduled and received four different bids before choosing Heilman. We chose Heilman because of Andy. Andy is responsive, patient, flexible and attentive. Heilman wasn't the cheapest bid we received; however, my wife and I wanted to choose a company that we could build a relationship with for all our future projects. Andy and his team fit that bill. Andy provided us with a prompt bid via an itemized PDF within about an hour of leaving our home. The itemized bid left no hidden charges and included the cost breakdown for: removal of existing deck, new composite deck, border, fascia, railing, lighting, labor, plans and permits. Once we decided to contract with Heilman, a 25% deposit is required to secure the contract. The remaining balance is due once the project passes city (Everett) inspection. Checks are an acceptable form of payment. Andy was able to start and complete our project within the promised time-frame. A total of two crew members (not Andy) worked together to build our deck. Both staff members were timely, respectful and tidy. We are thrilled with the outcome of our deck and look forward to enjoying it for many years to come. We had Andy come out to build a deck in our heavily sloped backyard. The deck has stairs cascading from an already existing porch off of the back of the house leading into 2 tiers of deck. Andy came out, looked at the ideas my husband and I had drawn up, as well as our property and gotten us an estimate slightly over 1 month later. We adjusted the original estimate to include costs for permitting as this was important to my husband and recommended to us by my Grandfather (also a contractor) since the deck would be built near our septic system. By the time we had things squared away it was the beginning of May and we were on the schedule to start construction at the end of June. Starting in the middle of June is when Andy first started contacting us about problems with permitting. We ran into multiple issues with airport zoning, delays with the county inspections and the health department (because we were building near the septic). Start of construction was on July 2nd and the job was completed on the 18th of September. My main gripe would be the cleanliness of the crew. Since the build was over the course of several months deck boards, screws, nails & garbage were left strewn about. Boards were left in the middle of my yard after they finished the first part of the job 14 July; which forced me to move them out of the way in order to mow the lawn. The crew returned during the 3rd week in August to build stairs off the lower part of the deck into the yard. After building part of the lower stairs, boards were again left in the middle of the yard in addition to a bunch of nails on the deck. The crew returned to finish over the course of a week between the 2nd and 3rd week of September. Normally I would understand leaving materials out in a workspace, or having a cardboard box of garbage out, but because the job ran over the course of 2 1/2 months with long gaps in between employees being on site, a certain degree of cleanliness would've been appreciated; moving materials off to the side so they are out of the way and don't create a hazard should've been a minimum standard. Final complaint: The area where the stairs come off the lower deck into the yard is short. The floor should've been leveled out in order to accommodate for one additional step. Instead some of the cement bricks I already had in my yard were placed as the "final step" instead of just building one. Obviously some of the delays were out of Andy's control. My mind however revisits the month and a half leading up to our job and how time could have been saved had the permits been submitted then instead of 2 weeks prior to the start of our job. Outside of the complaints listed above I was very pleased with Andy and his crew. When I wanted to get in touch with anyone via email/text/call he was always quick to respond. During the permitting process from hell it was clear to me that Andy was doing everything in his power to follow up and ensure some sort of forward progress was being made. Outside of the general housekeeping of work space Andy's crew was very respectful and kind; they played with our dogs, talked to the kids and were friendly and easy to communicate with about the jobs progress. On the final day/s of our job Andy and his wife (I think) came out and it seemed to be a group effort in conjunction with the crew to get everything completed. It was a loooong time coming, but the construction is of great quality and looks great. I would work with Heilman Deck & Fence again in the future for any needs that may arise as well as recommend their services to others. read more

Andy was so great to work with and his crew is fabulous. We had a shared fence that was at the end of it's life and a windstorm helped it come down in a couple places and we also opted to replace the rest of our fence which was almost as old. My husband and I hired this company not realizing they use subcontractors. I cannot recommend this company as the subcontractors constantly did a poor job installing the fence and my husband had to spend his entire day managing them. The job finally completed, was just adequate. When the bill came there were added expenses for items that were never used and we even had to call them and get that adjusted. Wow! I can't say enough great things about Heilman, and in particular, the owner Andy. We had him come out to bid a custom gate to cross our driveway. He submitted his bid promptly, in writing via email. He came out at the times he set up with us and was punctual, friendly, and respectful. He even came out the day it was pouring rain and he was soaked head-to-toe and still had a terrific attitude. Regarding the gate itself, he took pictures of what he proposed building and sent them to my husband and me for feedback before beginning. Once we approved the design, he began welding the frame. The project took him far more time than he anticipated (though he still completed on schedule per the bid). He custom welded the frame and added a lot of very smart things to an otherwise 'simple' project. He even accounted for the aging of the gate so we could adjust for settling, slat replacement, and potential future upgrades to the gate (e.g. openers) - even though it didn't change the scope of the project - building a driveway gate. And it's BEAUTIFUL. In the end, he admitted that had he known the extent of the project, he would have bid it higher, but did not alter his charges at all and invoiced us for exactly what he bid at the beginning of the project. When does that ever happen with a contractor?? We're so pleased with the work he did we are having him come back out tomorrow to bid on replacing our well house. Then maybe the kitchens and bathrooms... Andy is honest and hardworking and one of the guys you can feel really good about recommending! So I do! read more

He understood exactly what I wanted, built it within ten days because I needed it in order to rent my house, and put it exactly where I wanted - all without us actually being in the same place at the same time. Giving them a 1 star because that's the lowest I can give. I contacted them to get an estimate to install the backside of my fence and it seemed like to was to much work to meet with me. I was told that the latest they meet for an estimate was 3:30. Well sometimes that time doesn't work when most people work later than 3:30. Let me first say, I don't like writing bad reviews. But in all fairness, this situation deserves attention. We hired Andy to demo and rebuild our deck on our craftsman Snohomish home. Andy is a super nice, relatable guy. His rate was fair, so we hired him to demo and built our new deck. All of this completed within the expected time frame. We had told Andy from the start that we wanted a dark stained deck (hey, its 2016, 2015 at the time, and that's what people want) He says "no problem" - GREAT! He tells us that he's using a new product to stain and asks me to pick a color (I pick one and then match it to the closest color, from his preferred product pamphlet) so I do. Great! The stain was applied (the first time) and it did not turn out. At ALL. Even Andy said that it "needed to be redone" but he suggested that we first wait a good 4-5+ months to let the stain "lift" so it would be easier to get off. Okay! (We still love Andy! Everybody makes mistakes and who cares if our deck is gross over the winter months, right?) Andy returns in the spring to sand and re-stain, removing the railing etc, as he said. I'm now asked to pick my color from his pamphlet (a different stain product - not sure if this one was new to him as well or not) He and his crew prep, stain, etc. The next morning, after the second attempt at stain was applied, I met Andy outside to talk about the outcome. It was WAY worse than before! Andy was quickly reassembling all our railings, not in a good mood, distant and basically told me (he actually told me!) "This is your deck, im not doing it again". He left our property right then and there. Finished. *PLEASE see pics, my words are unesssesary* He left his job site right then + there, with no further contact! Little did he think about leaving HIS name on it. (We paid him after the first stain job because we trusted that he fix it in the spring and he had built a beautiful deck for us) We assumed and knew that he was just as upset as we were and that within a couple days, or even a week, he would contact us to fix what he left. NOPE. Despite him knowing what he left us with and how unhappy we were, we never heard from Andy Heilman again. I wrote this review not because I enjoy throwing anyone under the bus (as mentioned, I do not, this is a late but well-deserved review) but as professionals/business owners, It's not right that he get away with such boyish behavior. Most recently, this incident has been continuously rehashed for us because SO many people have commented on his shity (for lack of a better word) job. Our home is currently for sale and people notice! There are brown stains and splotches everwhere. Our real estate agent asked us if we were going to have our deck professionally fixed!! (Damn, I thought we did!!) To be completely fair, the deck was built well, but the finished product does not look professional AT ALL. *Please see pics* the other reviews don't have many pics. Make a good choice for yourself and project. Not everything goes smoothly but you want someone who will stand with their company and promise of satisfaction. He LEFT our home/his job site like this!! I was very pleased with all aspects of my experience working with Heilman Deck and Fence. I was looking into replacing our deck and getting a fence installed for our yard and Andy came out to do our initial quote. He provided straightforward and clear information about the process and costs, and also provided some helpful recommendations that ended up improving our design and saving us some money. We selected Heilman based on the trust we felt in the work and the fair price point, but where I was really impressed was with the flexibility they demonstrated. We had to hold off on the deck due to some design issues and a property line concern, but Andy was happy to make changes and still extended us the same price for the fence even with the smaller scope. As for the fence itself, it looks awesome. We did a horizontal fence and had concerned about whether it would come out looking like we wanted, but in the end it was perfect. The crew was fast and did excellent work. We called Andy to have a dog fence put in. We also needed our deck stairs replaced as well as a section of rail on the deck. He answered our questions over the phone and made an appointment to come out and give us a bid. He showed up on time and gave us a very fair price. This was August and they were busy with jobs until October. The week Andy said they would start work they called and told us which day they would start. Everyone did fast excellent work. They repaired the deck, installed new stairs and a black chain link fence with two custom gates Andy made himself. We love it and so does our dog! read more

Needed to fix two - three sections of our chain link fence that was destroyed by the tree from a big storm we had before the holidays November 17, 2015. Found Heilman Deck and Fence online as well as other companies. When I called the company I talked to Andy, the owner of the company. Just from talking to him over the phone I knew in my heart that he will be the one to fix our fence. On the phone he sounded very friendly, down to earth, and easy going. The next day he came to our house to take a look at the fence and gave me a brief estimate of what it would cost us. He was very honest, sincere, and flexible. He did not try to rip me/us off. After researching other companies (took me about a month) I made a final decision to go with Andy and was very pleased with my choice. When I called him back after the holidays, again, Andy was very responsive and serious about the work. He came to our house again, took more measurements, wrote estimate, and schedule the day for the fence repair. On the day of repair him and his coworker came on time, did an awesome job for a great price. They did more than I thought they would do.
