I hired Eastside Fence and Deck a long time ago -- some time between 2000 (when they were founded) and 2009 (when I started keeping better records of major spending).
My house's original deck was mostly adequate structurally, but the decking was rotting, it didn't have stairs to the back yard, and the sides seemed designed to capture leaves and other debris.
I don't remember what other bids I got (if any), but Eastside got the job. They demolished the old deck and hauled away the debris. They built a much stronger structure, starting with concrete pads and heavy treated lumber beams. It still doesn't shake, even if we jump on it. The stairs are solid and comfortably spaced and angled. The decking is Trex or a similar product, and has been maintenance free.
I've had three problems with the deck, only one of which I'd count against Eastside:
1. When a house-sitter circa 2010 used a charcoal barbecue, an ember fell out and burned a little of the decking, leaving a hole (about five inches long and an inch wide) near the house wall. I haven't been able to patch the hole because the decking was discontinued. The decking isn't fireproof, but the small hole suggests that it's not high risk either.
2. A tree branch fell on the railing of the deck and broke one of the plastic newel post caps. The caps were discontinued, so I patched the break with plastic from TAP Plastic and swapped my repaired cap with an undamaged cap, moving my not-so-pretty fix to a less conspicuous post.
3. The fascia that cover the treated beams of the long side of the deck and the stairs have pulled away from the beams. I contacted Eastside and they were so busy that they weren't able to schedule repairs.
The work they did installing the deck was excellent. But the inability to follow up with a request for a repair job was disappointing.
The reason I decided to write this review now is that I have another job that I'm planning. But it's been several days without a reply to my request through their web form, which is my main reason that I don't rate them as responsive.
Update: they eventually replied to my web form request. They were unable to bid on my job proposal. read more
