I just got scammed by the office and would seriously suggest anyone who visits this office to micromanage what is actually being billed to your insurance company. I only requested an eye exam but this office ordered 4 boxes of contact lenses at $35 per box which absorbed my $125 insurance reimbursment amount that I attempled to use by buying contact lenses online at $17.65 box. I submitted the claim to my insurance company for reimbursement which was denied since they paid the fund to Heights Vision Center. I went to the office and they could not provide any documentation stating that I authorized them to order contact lenses at $35 box. During the exam, I spefically stated that I will be ordering the contacts online since I am able to buy them at $15-17 a box. Despite the fact that I mentioned I will be ordering the contacts online, the office disregarded my intention and ordered the contacts. All they showed me was a credit card receipt that I signed for the co-pay. Prior to leaving the office on that day I stated to the girl at the register, "I would like to pay the co-pay". She printed a credit card receipt for $25 for me to sign which I did. They did not inform me that it was for a co-pay for the exam AND co-pay for the contacts. Needless to say, the credit card reciept was not itemized. They led me to believe on the day of the exam it was just for the co-pay. When I was in the office discussing the issue after the scam, they print an itemized receipt that was NOT signed showing the contacts lense order. The insurance company was not able to intervene to remediate. I was stuck paying $35 box at 4 boxes and still had to keep my 8 boxes I ordered onllne at $17.65 a box. I tried to compromise with them to lower the price to match the price I obtained online at visiondirect.com at $17.65 per box, but they stated "Its not your money, its the insurance company's money". The stupidity in that reasoning is that it IS my money to decide how the $125 is spent since I pay the insurance premiums every month. I would not be suprised if this office pulls this scam in the aggregate because most folks would not cause an issue and believe thier reasoning since it's "not thier money".
Another interesting point is the fact that Doctor Friedman responded to my post with some bogus lame story how I was confused and was fully informed on the insurance billing. Insread of recognizing a "confusion" occurred and rectifiying the situation by returning the money or matching the price online, he writes an essay in a feeble attempt to cover the office scam. Clearly, the right thing to do as a business owner is to work with the customer, however, instead, he would rather fight vehemently for the petty profit. Very grimy indeed. Would you want to risk going to an office that handles matters this way when there are plenty of good doctors in Brooklyn Heights like Grand Opticians on 151 Montague which has 5 stars in Yelp and all my friends recommend to me after this issue.
If you need to order contacts, the average price online is about $15 - $18 box. I ordered mine from visiondirect.com, 8 boxes at $17.65 with free shipping and a discount. You just have to order 8 boxes to get the discount, but that's better than Freidman's 4 boxes at $35/box for $140. 8 boxes for $140 at Visiondirect.com is clearly a better deal. The breakdown is below:
Subtotal: $ 207.92
Shipping: FREE
Discount/Credit: $ -69.23
Processing Fee: $ 1.99
Estimated Tax: $ 0.00
Total: $ 140.68
