I'm talking about a favorite pet speciality shop, Captivating Canines. (See pictures) For about a year we'd noticed that the store was no longer at the corner of Main St. and Westerville in downtown Westerville. We were saddened to see it go because it had been a favorite shop to pick up unique Christmas and birthday gifts for pet owner friends and family. So, when we walked out the back door of Old Bag of Bones, we could see this new shop and decided to check it out. Ron, the new owner had bought the store but relocated just a short distance down Main St. Although he told me he wasn't a huge "BUCKEYE" fan, I was willing to forgive him of that small indiscretion as we continued to talk about the store and new inventory he had on display. He was very gracious and allowed us to walk around and take pictures of him and specialized, fun merchandise he had in the store to share with you. It is a very relaxed environment so you can casually take your time to look around. Many items are marked down 50%. I was equally impressed and appreciative that the shop was designed to be handicap friendly with ample aisle space that allowed me to take my walker to any place I wanted to go.

Every time we go in Captivating Canines, the owner is so friendly and helpful. We have a puppy and go there for most of his basic needs and some more we didn't know about. Today we had to get his second collar and a new harness. They have a great selection of bright and colorful and fun designed collars and harnesses. We always come away from there happy and in a good mood. Such a sweet little place. It's fun to shop in and not overwhelming, like the big pet supply stores. Definitely make a stop, it's fun just to stroll and I guarantee you'll find something unique!

She had birthday celebrations for a week straight! They have some toys, freezer options, and other fun things to look at around the small space. They also offer grooming on-site. I got both of my dogs from Columbus Humane, and we had a good experience. The staff are friendly…read moreand want to help you find your perfect pet. I've also seen horses and pigs on their roster. The shelter seems clean and it's relatively quiet for a kennel full of dogs. I can't speak to cat adoptions, but dogs come vetted, spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines, and with a certificate for a follow up visit at 1 of maybe 25 local vet clinics. If you take your pet to the vet within 7 days of adoption (which is recommended) and they have health issues that you aren't prepared to deal with, the shelter will take the pet back. Our male had some pre-arthritis symptoms that the shelter hadn't diagnosed, but we were fine assuming that risk. We ended up staying with the vet we selected and they have been a great fit for my sometimes crotchety dog. She has a very thick file and they take a lot of care to make sure she is comfortable and has a positive experience, so I really appreciated this service from the shelter. You're expected to bring in your existing pets to meet any new additions. This was helpful, but a 30 minute meet and greet is not really sufficient time to make sure your animals get along well long term, but I think they're working with what they have. I'm only pointing this out to guide in making a good decision, not as a harsh criticism of a community-based service. I do believe this is an open access shelter with euthanasia services. I don't have experience with this, but the shelter also offers emergency boarding services for people leaving a bad domestic situation. I think this is an amazing program and would support Columbus Humane for this alone, not considering that I found my perfect pet here.

Due to our cat of 9.5 year's sudden passing we were recently looking for a new kitten/cat to fill…read morethe big cat shoes that were left behind. My wife and I visited Colony Cats, Cat Welfare, and Cozy Cat Cottage to name a few. With all of the wonderful potential fur kids we saw we didn't see the one that we just connected with. We decided to go to Pets Without Parents as it was a rescue that we had not been to before and it was just down Indianola from our house. We had no expectations when we went to PWP other than we knew that they were a smaller rescue that was located in an older house. When we walked in we were pleasantly greeted by a volunteer and showed where the hand sanitizer (so that we could clean our hands between kitties). The individual who greeted us was figuratively knee deep in cleaning dog cages but, she was friendly and responsive when we had questions. There, in the center cage on the bottom was this beautiful kitten! Both of our hearts melted when we saw him, as he was nearly the spitting image of the cat we had just lost. The individual working the shelter that day let us know that those two kittens were meant to be picked up today by the person that was adopting them. Our hearts collectively dropped as then we knew that of the cats at PWP, these were the ones that we shouldn't get attached. We petted all the cats that we could, well save the brand new box of feral kittens! I am sure that in no time they'll be adoptable little fluffs! Despite not seeing a cat/kitten we connected to we decided to put in an application. The application was very similar to others you might see when adoption a new animals. Asked for references, job information, current pet information, veterinary contact, as well as things the adopter's view on declawing. Much to my surprise I received a call the very next day from the PWP shelter manager! I thought that the call may have been to clarify the application we had submitted but, it was not. The adoption on the beautiful kitten (that was meant to go home the day before) had fallen through. They wanted to know if we would like to come meet the little we had seen the day before. We quickly (and gleefully) went back to PWP to officially meet & pet this kitten. Cat carrier in tow, of course, just in case! If you adopt through PWP you get a wellness check up card for use at the vet where the animal has received their vaccines & spay/neuter. We took this offer so that we could get our new little friend checked out before we established him at our vet. This was great as he had a cold (that they were treating him for) and we were able to proceed to the next step in treatment, an antibiotic shot to help knock out the remainder of the kitty cold. The adoption contract at PWP is more heavily worded than others might be. There is a provision in it where if the contract is broken that PWP can seek money from the adopter who has broken the contract. It seems to me that this is included to bring home the gravity that is the responsibility of adopting a furkid. Oh, and I can verify that the folks at PWP do check references, which is great since they are working to place pets in well suited homes. P.S. Pets Without Parents is loud. With the pupsters looking for a new home in the adjacent room, any kitten/cat adopted from these guys will likely be a-okay with loud sounds and barking dogs. Train tracks also run right next door to the rescue. P.P.S. Our new kitten is fitting in purrfectly at home.
