This contractor is well reviewed with an impressive portfolio and highly qualified - BUT.. as soon as we discussed issues around the city permitting requirements, it quickly went south. From citing delays, potential added costs, etc. which is understandable. HOWEVER, we were able to acquire a simple "over the counter" permit from RPV which did not require submitting any plans, details, product specs, etc. since it was simply replacing current -- existing composite boards. After advising him of such, we get a request to meet and being told, he could no longer do the job due to a worker injury. While it may be the case, it just seemed TOO coincidental that this happens immediately upon my sending a text advising of the permitting. SOOO I guess the lesson learned from this case is if even licensed contractors express hesitations or push back about permitting.. STAY AWAY from them. Now we have to start the painful task of interviewing contractors and bids again.. THANKS FOR NOTHING iDeck!!!!

Don told us the problem was that our balcony floor was flat and that when it rained the water was pooling at the base of the balcony and leaking into the downstairs ceiling. He told us if we redid the balcony floor and sloped it the leak would stop. We paid $2500 for Don to rebuild the balcony floor since we were told this would stop the leak. The leak never stopped. We have had to call Don back 4 times (after each large rainstorm) because the ceiling was continuing to leak. Each time Don would come out and claim to fix the leak. After the first large rainstorm this winter in December we woke up to water leaking into our living room from the same spot in the ceiling. We texted Don again and told him the ceiling was continuing to leak. He came out about a week later and said he fixed the leak. A week later, during the next large rainstorm, my son and I were sitting on the couch when water started pouring onto our heads from the same spot on the living room ceiling. We again texted Don to tell him the leak was still there. He came out over 2 weeks later, did some work and said he fixed the leak. His helper handed me an invoice for $2,000. At no point were we ever informed that this work wasn't covered under the original warranty. We were never given an estimate and were never told we were being charged. We never signed a new contract or agreed to pay anything. We would not have agreed to pay thousands more to fix something we already paid him thousands to fix. Don is now threatening to place a lien on my home if we don't pay him the additional money. I have asked for receipts for the materials purchased and he refuses to give them to me. I have spoken to two construction attorneys and Don has no claim to additional money and there is no case to place a lien. Don is taking advantage of the mechanical lien process in an attempt to bully me into paying thousands more for a job I already paid him for. Filing a lien when there is no contract or agreement to pay in place is fraudulent and unethical. I would stay far far away from this company and Don.

After reviewing the quotes we got and interacting with the representatives of the other companies, it was clear Johnny and Hard Rock Effex were the company for us. We have nothing but great things to say about them. From Johnny to his foreman to all the guys who work for him, they were all such a pleasure to deal with. They were on time, kept a neat workplace, were respectful and all around lovely guys to deal with. The end result is our pool and backyard are absolutely beautiful! As we went through the process we started realizing we needed new landscape lighting and new gates. We asked Johnny if he could do those as well and he could. It made our lives so much easier dealing with one person/company for everything. Hard Rock Effex does high quality work and charges reasonable prices. We highly, highly recommend Hard Rock Effex and Johnny and his crew. They did what they said they would do, when they said they would do it, and met every deadline. Every step of the way their experience, expertise, and professionalism shone through.
