Centrally located in the bustling town of Kapaa, Hee Fat is a souvenir store that also has some pretty good shave ice. Shave ice and Hawaii are almost synonymous, and it's probably the 3rd thing that comes to mind when you think of Hawaii, right after the gorgeous beaches and delicious seafood. The shave ice here is generously portioned. The ice is pretty soft compared to other places. The syrups are made with real fruit and aren't overly sweet. You have to get the ice on top of some macadamia nut ice cream (it'd be a travesty if you didn't). The ice cream is rich and creamy, and it's augmented by the buttery nuttiness of the macadamias. There are so many souvenirs available here that it can be a bit overwhelming. I like the selection here more than what's offered at an ABC store, because I feel it's not as common. The t-shirt collection is top notch, and definitely a great way to commemorate your trip out to the Garden Isle. The designs are clever and witty, without being tacky or gaudy. There are a lot of shirts that pay homage to some of Kauai's most notable things: chickens and Jurassic Park. The majority of the t-shirts are printed on some of the softest cotton around. Spend the extra money for a shirt here and your skin will thank you. The only irksome quality about this place is the vagueness surrounding its operating hours. It's a general store and in the back there's a shave ice place. Huge variety of flavors to choose from. They have traditional syrups or real fruit syrup. What we got: Real Fruit Syrup: Lychee, Passionfruit, & Strawberry with Snow Cap and Li Hing Powder ($5): my 3 go to flavors. Decided to get it as the real fruit syrups and I thought it was a little less sweet than the traditional syrups. Strong lychee, passionfruit and strawberry flavors. Snow cap and li hing powder are free! Two people could share one, but of course I had to get one for myself since it was our last day... Real Fruit Syrup: Strawberry, Mango, & Passionfruit with Li Hing Powder ($5): sisters choices. Parents enjoyed them too, but still not the same as Wailua's... Service: Line wasn't too long, but they only had 2 workers so it took awhile for us to get it. They were super nice and apologized for the long wait though! My wife and I found a coupon in a Kauai travel magazine for a free scoop of ice cream when you purchase a shave ice here, so we decided to check it out. Hee Fat became our go-to for shave ice in Kauai after we tried it the first time. Their ice is very finely-shaved, their flavors are quite tasty, they give you a pretty generous portion, and their mac nut ice cream (free with coupon!) was a fitting treat at the bottom. Definitely ask for snow-capped (condensed milk) on your shave ice if you decide to get one. My wife and I tried coconut, lychee, guava, and passionfruit flavors (not all on one shave ice) and liked all of them. I don't think you can go wrong with whatever flavor you choose. I ordered the half strawberry half blue razz. I'm not afraid to admit that I felt like a kid again with that order. My wife went strong with the lava flow. I swear she downed that thing in 6 minutes flat. Whenever she saw a brain freeze coming, she stayed focused and played her game. That's all we can ask for, right? The store itself is cool, too. There are all the Hawaiian trinkets and specialty food items you can think of. I even found myself looking at the different sea salts and saying, "I have no idea what to do with these...but should I buy a few anyway to try? Maybe they go good with eggs..." This place has freaking awesome shaved ice. The previous yelp reviews set the bar pretty high for me and I most certainly was not disappointed when I got to try it for myself. The ice is shaved super duper fine and all the flavors & ice cream are absolutely delicious. I've had Lava Flow, Hawaiian Sunset & Rainbow shaved ice. I have no favorites, I loved them all. The portions are pretty large as well so the kid's size is perfect for me. I tried a bunch of shaved ice places after Hee Fat and nothing else really compares. This place is a must stop. We stopped just cause and it was the best place I went all day. I didn't know I needed peanut butter when in Hawaii till I tried theirs. I wouldn't have bought or even tried peanut butter at a gift shop until I sampled this from the girl handing them out. It was awesome. But for real the best thing to try is their real fruit shaved ice. I have had shaved ice and love it. But they go above and beyond with theirs. The real fruit is worth the extra little bit. You can't go wrong. They let you sample the flavor and it was amazing. Shout out to the girl who helped us, who I can't remember her name but she has 5 kids and her brother and sister live in Seattle, she made the experience and sold us on everything. Simply the best shaved ice ever!!! I actually created a Yelp account just to post this review. The shaved ice just melts in your mouth unlike most other "shaved ice" that crunches. Over a 4 day trip, I ended up getting 3 shaved ice cones (2 root beer float and 1 lava). For about $5 you get a lot for your money and a scoop of ice cream in the bottom of the cup to boot. If you take a trip to Kauai, you will regret it if you don't stop by this store and get a shaved ice. Be warned this will forever spoil any other shaved ice anywhere. read more

Still looking for the best shaved ice place in Kaui. This place is pretty close but the wait time and limited seating area are a bit negative. They have real fruit syrups which are really good and harder to find is a plus and the shaved ice is very smooth and consistent. Portion size is very good but they are not as consistent with giving you the right portion of syrup to shaved ice so you have to get back in the slow moving line to ask for more. Maybe it was just the staff at the time, but I have heard that comment before from other people. Overall a pretty good shaved ice place but the wait time and inconsistencies brings it to a 4 star. If your around the North side near Hanela and Princeville - would recommend the Wishing Well- line moves quickly, only one size, but the organic and seasonal syrups are really good! Fluffy, soft, yummy, flavorable shaved ice in a nice big portion tucked in a lovely green plastic cup over icecream. I would always go to Shave Ice Paradise in Hanalei cause that was the only one near our condo but now I will always come to Hee Fat and get my fix on. Their souvenir store portion has nice stuff that's pretty decently priced. Stuff like sweaters, stickers, salts, magnets and more. Nothing crazy unique you couldn't find at any other store but good nonetheless. The shave ice selling portion though is a must visit. They have a natural flavors option which tastes amazing.
