If you're craving real Southern comfort food, Mikki's is definitely worth a visit. We stopped in on…read morea busy day, and the line was almost out the door, which is always a good sign. Even with the crowd, the line kept moving, and there was no shortage of delicious-looking options on the steam table. From fried chicken and turkey wings to baked fish, spaghetti, cabbage, green beans, mac and cheese, dressing, black-eyed peas, collard greens, candied yams, mashed potatoes, and more, it was hard to decide what to order because everything looked homemade. I ordered the turkey wing with collard greens, black-eyed peas, mashed potatoes with gravy, rice, a corn muffin, and sweet potatoes. I also grabbed a Suicide Punch, which is a mix of all their Kool-Aid flavors. First, let's talk about those sweet potatoes... BABY!! They absolutely stole the show. They were piping hot, buttery, perfectly sweet, and hands down the best thing on my plate. I could've easily eaten another serving. The collard greens were seasoned beautifully with a rich, smoky flavor and plenty of pot liquor. They were tender without being mushy and tasted like they had been cooking all day. The black-eyed peas were creamy, well-seasoned, and comforting, while the mashed potatoes were smooth and paired perfectly with the savory gravy. The rice soaked up every bit of that gravy, and the corn muffin was soft with just the right touch of sweetness. The turkey wing itself was tender, juicy, and covered in flavorful gravy. My only surprise was that I was expecting just the wing portion, but instead I received the whole wing with the drum attached. It wasn't a big deal because it was still delicious--I just personally prefer getting only the wing. The Suicide Punch was another winner. If you grew up drinking Kool-Aid, you'll appreciate it. It's sweet, refreshing, and a fun mix of all the flavors. My family ordered several other dishes, so we got to try quite a variety. We had baked chicken, macaroni and cheese, candied yams, and black-eyed peas, and everything was generously portioned. The baked chicken was moist and well-seasoned, and the mac and cheese had that creamy, homemade taste you hope for from a soul food restaurant. My only real complaint was that some of the food was served lukewarm instead of hot, which took away from the experience a little. Soul food just hits differently when it's fresh and piping hot. Ironically, the sweet potatoes were the one item that came out nice and hot, and they were absolutely perfect. Overall, Mikki's serves authentic soul food with generous portions and flavors that remind you of Sunday dinner at a family member's house. The food is comforting, the selection is impressive, and it's easy to see why the place stays busy. If everything had been served hot, this would've easily been a five-star experience. Pro tip: Don't leave without getting the sweet potatoes and a Suicide Punch. Trust me--you'll thank me later. sweet potatoes and a Suicide Punch free refills. Trust me--you'll thank me later.

It still was borderline of being too much salt in the oxtail dish but it was tolerable. I ordered the chicken and waffles dish. It came with eggs (I added cheese) and grits. The heat being trapped inside the to-go container made the powdered sugar turn into hard crystals. I wish they would have put the sugar in the side. Not too bad for a late night food craving.

I'm going to give you an honest, no BS opinion here, based upon my reflections and observations. The restaurant occupies a large space, that at one time housed a piano bar; they've kept the performance stage, in the back of the dining space. I'm not sure if they use it or not. They serve cafeteria style, so you can save a bit on tips. I initially thought that the prices were a little stiff, at least for daily dining. At $18 a meal, its not in my affordable daily dining range, which typically tops at about $10. That is, until you see the serving size. My gods, it was enormous! My wife and I had plenty for the two of us, and took home enough for a third meal! Given that, it came down to about $6 a meal, which is a steal! So I want to commend them for great value! The food was displayed behind glass (thank you) on a steam table. Most of it looked really good. We were there around 6:30pm on a Saturday, and the meatloaf looked a bit dried out. The ribs looked kinda sparse--they were obviously what were left. We ordered the delicious-looking smothered pork chops, yams, mashed potatoes, and mac'n cheese. These turned out to be tremendously yummy, and they came with a couple pieces of cornbread, to boot. TIISF thoughtfully places to-go containers and bags in the dining area, making it unnecessary to return to the serving line to get them. A final note: the young man behind the counter serving up the food was very pleasant and personable, and even threw in an extra pork chop (I hope that does not get him into trouble...it truly served to cement a good impression I had of the place.) Food: 5 stars Service: 5 stars Ambiance: 3 stars I recommend all of my Humble, Kingwood, Spring, and Atascocita neighbors give this place a try...you will not be sorry.

They just provided a total cost without any breakdown of how much each item costs or how much would be provided. To trying it out: it seems they don't have their full menu everyday which is fine but might have changed my mind if they had all the items I would have ordered catering to try. I got the fried chicken, green beans, cabbage, and they're apparently award winning mac and cheese. The only thing I would eat again was the chicken which even then seemed unevenly seasoned between pieces. The cabbage was overwhelmingly garlicky whereas the green beans had no flavor. The Mac and cheese was soupy and seemed like I was jipped of the portion. Overall will not be back or catering

The candid yams were fantastic, and the cornbread was soft and sweet like cake (tasted just like the way my dad makes it). I even tried greens for the very first time here and surprisingly they tasted great. I ate all of them and drunk the juice. Don't let the crowd scare you off. The wings were also dry and we had to ask for ketchup so maybe add some of the syrup to it or offer gravy. The croissant French toast was delicious and sweet enough to eat without syrup, which is how I had it. I would get the oxtail omelette or the croissant French toast myself, if I come back. But, I do have some things I want to say. First, there is absolutely no signage or anything that explains what the items are, or even the basic whether you seat your self or not. It's kinda cafeteria style, you pick up a tray and silverware and then give them your choices. I did get it explained to me after standing at the counter looking like an idiot for a few minutes. I kind of fell in behind a couple of guys that came in right after me, I let them go because I had no idea. Second, there is nothing to tell you how much things cost. Protein Choices were smothered pork chops, meatloaf, chicken, turkey wings, fish and... wait for it.. oxtails. Now I know some of you are thinking HARD PASS on oxtails, but believe me, these are a rarity to find on a menu, I would say because of the cost, but also because they aren't quick to prepare. If you are offering oxtails on your menu, you have to have plenty on hand and be confident in your dish. Micheaux's hits the mark. Third, and this is very important, the food PLENTIFUL, and I do mean truly two people could probably eat what I got served. personally, I LOVE oxtails, but because nobody else in my house would even consider eating these, (they are not with me) and because they are super expensive in the store, I rarely make it for just myself. So of course I ordered the oxtails., it's served with rice, and two additional sides and cornbread. I ordered greens and green beans. It was pricey , like 37.00 before the tip, and as I was paying I was cursing myself for spending so much for lunch but..It's so delicious! I do think that the prices should be posted somewhere because ( and this is why it's getting 4 of 5 stars) I never would have ordered this knowing I would not be able to take it with me to reheat for later. I wish this wasn't an impulse stop while I was driving somewhere else . I don't know how the guys that were ahead of me put it all away in record time. They left before I started the review. I stopped eating to do the review because I want to eat more before I leave this area of town. I don't think this will travel well, especially if I can't reheat it. OMG, the man next to me just ate all of his food and just ordered a piece of chocolate cake that is making my mouth water. How am I supposed to finish what is in front of me and think about the cake too? I also want to mention that I erroneously picked up a salt shaker before I started to eat... Not needed, nothing needed salt at all, everything was perfectly seasoned. Well, I am calling it, I will take the rest with me and figure something out. Maybe one day I will be in the area again.
