Our 2nd floor air conditioning unit stopped working suddenly Friday. Kenneth of Heating Alternatives had been to our house several years ago for a heating issue, which he resolved, so I contacted him to check out out air conditioning problem. Ken came out on Saturday as agreed, but needed to a taller 28 foot ladder to access our roof top units. Ken booked us for Sunday morning, showed up on time, used his 28 foot ladder and diagnosed the problem quickly. He explained the problem and had the parts in his van and ready to make the repair. Kenneth came to give an estimate regarding my broken heater and told me that it was the fan motor that needed to be repaired. Like many others that would tell you to spend $8k to replace the entire unit, he was very honest and said that it was repairable and also helped me fix my two gas fireplaces at no cost. Kenneth and Marvin were contracted to install a mini split system in my home in May 2017. After a haphazard install, there were MANY ISSUES: breaking my gas line, the Gas Company was called and my home not having any gas service for a week. Kenneth was unprofessional all around, late to work, early to leave, in the installation and also was deceitful of installing a cheaper piece of equipment, not the one agreed upon and signed on the contract. I strongly suggest that you check the serial numbers and the equipment on your contract, because most likely Heating Alternatives installed a cheaper/outdated/smaller capacity unit. Heating Alternatives repeatedly did not respond to the request via phone or email to complete the job. LA Dept of Buildings was called and they confirmed the job was not done. I filed in small claims against Heating Alternatives, Kenneth was a no show, twice. I won the judgement against his company. In the end, I was able to settle and get compensation from Heating Alternatives in mandatory arbitration via the California State License Board. After over a year of headache, turmoil and a non working, incomplete mini split HVAC system. I am still astounded at the level of unprofessionals that I encountered with Heating Alternatives. All claims against Heating Alternatives can be looked up via the LA Small Claims case summary. Please review this contractor's history with his bond companies, they dropped him. Heating Alternatives saved me two years ago when the blower motor stopped working on my AC unit. A competing company suggested replacing the whole unit at a cost of $15k, but Heating Alternatives fixed it for less than $1500. Excellent experience. Kenneth went over and beyond to troubleshoot my AC. He spent alot of time trying to save my AC compressor, but it was blown, and he walked me through exactly what happened. I had a special compressor that required Kenneth to travel an hour away to obtain from the distributor. He went out of his way to get the new compressor, although it backed up his schedule of appointments. Instead of missing his appointments, he came back and forth over the next day to install my new compressor in between breaks in other appointments. He probably did not have a minute off until 9pm. Wouldn't stop working while talking so I couldn't hear myself. ... and actually said to me "spit it out bro". Then continued to be very rude and dismissive on the phone. Saying "I'll try". I was calling because the work he did failed On a repair from on a blower from 2 months ago & is under warranty. We have tenants who are cold and need the heater fixed and he said he would "try" to get there before Monday. Last time dealing with them was good. Today was very unprofessional and disrespectful. Kenneth showed up with another guy learning the job and charged me $395 to replace an $80 part in my furnace. $125 for trouble shooting, and $370 for a job that took 30 minutes if that. When I asked why it was so much he said because he had to train his guy. I said hell no and he miraculously took off $50. I paid just to get them out of my house and avoid a problem. Should have asked for the estimate beforehand. Never again. And I am skeptical of all the positive reviews here. All I have to say is wow, these guys are the nicest, most professional and courteous servicing professionals I have dealt with as a homeowner. We had scheduled a time for a Tuesday for them to come in and look at my AC unit because it was making a crazy noise and they even called on the Monday before to see if I was in since they were in the area already. They came in, he gave me a few possible issues that it could be and then just went right into diagnosing the problem. After testing it out for about 20-30mins he found nothing to be wrong with the AC unit with the exception that the compressor may make a noise every once in a while if it runs hard on a hot day. If the noise becomes too much of a nuisance he'd be happy to replace it but it isn't necessary since it would be an expensive change. Total cost of this visit: $0.00 That's good service and when the time comes I will have them service our AC unit again. Highly recommend these guys! read more
