Make sure to carefully inspect the ripeness / color / texture / firmness of every object and open those packages of berries; there can be hidden mold on many products. There is a reason things are marked down so cheap; preparing a dinner for that evening - go for it. Stocking up for the week - think twice. My favorite bargains are when avocados are 4 / $1 or flats of bananas are $3. A great way to overindulge on some tasty guacamole (get the seasoning next door) or a cheap healthy treat for the office staff. If I lived in the neighborhood, I'd visit daily and knock down my grocery bill by 75%.

They still do blueberry picking in June, so keep eyes on their socials and website. Maybe it's the Kansas in my blood, but it's really, really beautiful around this farm (much more so than nearby Missouri farms). Rolling hills, green tree canopies, dirt roads and big sky all while being surprisingly close to Lawrence. This farm was such a fun experience to pick strawberries at, and I'll go step-by-step in just a sec, but I have to shout out that I really appreciated the simplicity of this experience. Some of the u-picks and pumpkin patches go overboard with cheesy rides, hastily-made plywood games, etc. Some may love those, I don't always. I prefer to let the nature and friendly people around provide the fun, and Wohletz shines in that regard. Bring cash! That's important and while the berries are priced fairly, you don't want to be stuck with a basket you can't cover. Again, we gravitate to this area a lot anyways, but the rural land around Lawrence really is a special place. I'm just now realizing we drive up this way for strawberries in the spring, trail runs in the summer, pumpkin picking at Schaake's Pumpkin Patch in the fall, and cut a Christmas tree at Strawberry Hill Tree Farm in the winter. You've got to try them...Heidi has samples so try them all. She has an amazing oatmeal cannoli with a maple cream filling. A lemon custard type canolli that has just the right amount of sweetness and tartness. Just stop by, you will be sooooo glad that you did.

The Mission Farm and Flower Market officially opened at the beginning of June, and is a great…read moreaddition to the shops along Johnson Drive. After an 18 month-long intensive infrastructure project to bring major updates and beautification to Mission's main drag, this local farmer's market, located in a grassy byway along the Rock Creek Trail between Reeds Road and Maple Street, helps add to Mission's "hometown downtown" feel. For those who live in the area, it's easily accessible on foot via the streamway trail and/or Johnson Drive, and for those who drive in, parking is plentiful and easily accessible at city lots at Outlook and on Woodson Rd., which offer access to the trail. Local businesses ScriptPro, Shortstop BP, and Casey Bros. Sinclair along Johnson Drive also have arrangements with the city to allow parking, and there is a ton of angle parking on the street due to the recent upgrades. The market is new, but already has a good number of vendors setting up awnings on every Saturday, 7 a.m. - 1 p.m., through September. In addition to produce vendors, several local shops have kiosks, including Dips and Sips, with their massive cinnamon rolls, and Werner's with their sausages. Vendors also sell popcorn, baked goods, local honey, plants, flowers, cheeses, soaps and lotions, farm fresh eggs, meats, and jams and jellies, to name a few. The market is open air and spread out along a popular dog walking trail, so there is plenty of space for pets, a grassy expanse for kids to play, as well. There was live folk music this morning, and I ran into Mission's mayor and his wife, who noted that bench seating and canopies will be added as the project progresses. As a resident of Mission, one thing I appreciate is a sense of small-town community in an area that's metro-suburban, and projects like this really add to the neighborly, community feel. The first couple of Saturdays of the Market, rain has been an issue, but today's market was sunny and hot, and lots of people, vendor and customer alike, were out early. Lots of visiting with vendors, and just a really great, friendly community experience. I'll look forward to watching this neat new farmer's market grow, from the ground up.

It doesn't have people selling things like 1 dollar sunglasses like the Overland Park farmers market. This farmers market is what every farmers market should be. The type of place where the farmers are actually farmers. The type of place where the farmers will remember who you are and what you like. The type of farmers market where the farmer will bring you green tomatoes for the next week just because you want to fry some. It is also home to some of the most delicious tomatoes you will ever have in your life. I'm being serious here. There's this guy. He sells them out of the back of his truck. They are the ugliest tomatoes ever, but they are so good. I love this man and his tomatoes. I can't wait until it is July. If you want fancy stalls and pastas and breads and pies, then there's another farmers market close by that is probably better for you. I mean, the Shawnee Farmers Market does have some of this stuff, but for the most part it is just produce. I love it, and you should too.

I love the way this stuff tastes. I know it's honey and it should taste the same, but not all honey is created equal. I don't know what kind of hoodoo they put on the bees to produce such great honey, but I can't take my tea without it. I would pick me up a bottle every few weeks from the organic farmers market in south KC and now I'm hoping to get some through the Internets.

This is a bee 'pharm', run by a chemist and his wife who live near the UMKC/Rockhill area, where…read morethey manage about 30 hives around the city, raised strictly for their honey and, they say, they don't use sugar in the winter or move the bees around for agricultural purposes. They also don't use chemicals and stuff in their bee 'pharming', so this all gives their bees a better chance at the bee colony collapse thing, and makes their honey a little better for the bees and everyone. Anyhow, they sell the stuff at the Minor Park farmer's market, and on First friday's at Bad Seed in the east crossroads. Check em out! The competition for local KC honey is not too steep, so 5 stars until this place gets flooded with beeswax (city hall not included--ha!).

We have enjoyed their produce at the the farmers market, so getting to the source is next-level. If you're there for strawberries, then just know that the patch is wayyyyyy in the back. You can hitch a ride on one of the tractor-pulled carts or hoof it yourself, just through the play areas and up the gentle slope. Berries are poppin' in May, so getcha a box and get to hunting! Hot tip: the best berries seem to be in the middle. A flat box runs you $0.75 and the berry price is a bit over $5/lb. If you just can't stop picking, then you'll fill a flat quickly and you're rewarded with maybe $40 worth of strawberry goodness. These berries are so worth it! Clean, sweet, and just ripe for the picking! Gieringers does other berries (blackberries, blueberries, etc.) but those are best picked well into the summer. The service is awesome, whether it's help with parking or a lift to & from the berry patch, the staff is always helpful and easy to find. Great enterprise and great fun!
