A few months ago, our family dog, whom my parents had for 16 beautiful years, passed. However Kat was welcoming and worked quickly to ensure all the visitors were taken care of. Kat and Pat not only dedicate themselves to caring for neglected and abandoned animals, but they work other jobs on the side to afford the costs of food and facilities the animals need. I am really glad I discovered the spay and neuter clinic (hawaii spca) and witnessed the good hearts of the people who run the foundation. They welcome volunteers, donations of anything for dogs, cats and pigs, and potential interested adopters for all the animals in their care.

On Sunday my husband and I took our dog to the Spay and Neuter clinic at Hawaii SPCA in Waianae. Upon our arrival, we noticed the facility looked very run down but with the SPCA being such a well known organization we thought we were in good hands. The staff there were all very friendly and ensured us that our dog was safe with them. We got a text about 10 hours later that our dog was ready to be picked up. When we arrived they brought us our dog in a kennel. He was in and out of consciousness and was laying down so we were unable to view his incision at that time. When we got home we put a cone on him and he slept the rest of the night. When we got up the next morning our dog was awake and we were able to check his incision and we could not believe our eyes. We ended up having to take him to Wahiawa Pet Hospital where the Vet there had to give our dog staples, pain killers, and antibiotics in order to prevent infection. I strongly urge those of you who need to spay or neuter your pets to take your business elsewhere in order to ensure their safety.

Especially because they deleted their google reviews because they got bad reviews. Firstly, I want to say from the first day I personally met the people behind Oahu GSD I should have run away. Not only did they say that "having puppies is a vacation [to the dogs]" but that many people have tried but no one on island came close to what they were doing. I agree with the second statement, namely due to the fact that no one on island is producing GSD puppies at a scale that a puppy mill would. Many of these dogs have been overbred, and are showing symptoms of it. Despite that, they are continuously bred and forced to rear pups. Not only this, but their breeding stock is not properly shown nor tested. Oahu GSD has several dogs they purchased from Germany, and once they received them they have not been tested, shown, nor have they been in any dog sports as far as I have seen. They are kept on property. Which to me means two things: these breeders do not care for their dogs outside of the money they can make from their puppies, and that the promise of "sound temperament" is empty. If you aren't testing and putting your dogs in situations where their temperament is tested, you cannot say their temperament is sound. Secondly, puppies from this puppy mill constantly are going home with health problems and health defects. My own puppy after only two days had to be rushed to the vet due to a bleeding skin infection- which Oahu German Shepherds had said was a resolved issue during their puppy-hood. The vet had to put my 8 week old puppy on antibiotics, which he said he only did due to the severity of the issue. On top of that, we had to bring her back several times for chronic diarrhea. This diarrhea has not resolved despite it being several months since we have brought our puppy home. Believe it or not, my puppy got off on a relatively mild case. I have talked to several other puppy owners from Oahu GSD and their pups have had parasites, skin infections, chronic diarrhea, and birth defects. Despite this, Oahu GSD constantly says their program is "the best." Finally, and the most heartbreaking part for me, is the reactivity and lack of confidence many of these dogs have. My own puppy has had a large amount of reactivity issues, even during her 8 week to 16 week socialization period they were incredibly reactive and fearful of other dogs. Even a dog barking on television would send her into an anxiety-ridden spiral. I do not recommend you get a puppy from this puppy mill. It is deplorable what they allow their dogs and puppies to go through, and it is a shame that they have marketed themselves to be anything other than a money making machine.

There was a hike (which my professor forgot to tell me about) to the site we worked at, but depending on the severity of the students disability it's doable (though they may complain a lot especially if you don't prepare them ahead of time). Plus there is a road where the guys were able to take me back down in a truck (which if my professor had let them know ahead of time they probably could have brought me up, though I won't tell him, but the minor discomfort I felt was well worth the satisfaction of what we accomplished that day).

I came for the first time last month and was treated to an amazingly therapeutic day of clearing invasives in order to allow koa to naturally come up. Learned about a few plants and how to identify them and was treated to an amazing lunch after, cooked by volunteers, and took some edible hibiscus home for cooking. Although I spent three hours clearing, I definitely feel like I came away with so much more than I put in and regretted putting off coming for wanting to sleep in, or do other errands, in the few months prior. I have been missing out on a lot. I came for the second time this past weekend and we spent some time clearing weeds from several different sites on the farm, which we then fed to the pigs. Other activities include kapa pounding, hale building, garden maintenance, and cooking, so lots of opportunity to do what suits you and your abilities. The staff is great. I worked with Aulani this weekend, who is a total gem and a staffer there for the last six years. She introduced me to maile hohono, which puts a stop to mosquito bites and OMFG it's a miracle plant. Lots of people here fulfilling volunteer requirements, but I'm just doing it cuz I love it. Make sure to dress appropriately with things you can get dirty in. Bring your own water, even better bring your own plates/silverware for lunch, and be prepared for a day of well-being and rejuvenation. Make sure to also check out Roots Cafe to support local farms/food. I haven't been myself, but can't wait to go.

After learning more about this non-profit organization and being in awe of their mission, I was always willing to find ways to assist and help these innocent animals in need. The board members of this organization are very kind and you can tell they are all helpful in educating the public about pet care and their mission to rescue these dogs in need. For the past couple of years, I have been given the opportunity to take photos of their doggos in need to showcase their fun personalities in hopes of finding their furever home. Their process of finding the right doggo for the right family is very thorough and you can tell they care about the animals. When it comes to your interest in fostering one of their dogs, they'll be in constant communication with you while you're fostering and do reference checks to ensure their dogs are being well taken care of. They also offer educational events and do some fun fundraisers all to help with taking care of the dog's medical bills as some rescues may need extra love than others. Tradewinds went above and beyond and provided exemplary care for my boys. Their kennel was spacious and they had an indoor/outdoor run, with my two boys sleeping indoors during the night. They also have a gorgeous, large yard where my dogs were able to have (supervised) playtime each day. I love that the daily playtime is also one-on-one with the caregiver, which is so helpful for dogs who are reactive/wary toward other dogs. The daily update photos on Facebook really put my mind at ease- my pups seemed to be having lots of fun! The facility itself is beautiful, and the staff did wonderfully with my dogs, especially with my anxious dog. They were accommodating of my requests, and worked hard to make both myself and my pups feel at ease.
