She saw me walking along the road (which I like to do in the evening at a new place) and she came out to ask if I was OK. Warned me about the wildlife, and made a recommendation about a local state park. "And I think to myself, what a wonderful world"

I arrived late, after dark but was warmly welcomed and assisted into a campsite that I stayed in for 4 nights. The hike was nearly 10 miles round trip and quite challenging. The weather was perfect, though a bit humid from recent rains, and we were soaked with sweat. We felt like we finally found a team with determination and patience. One of our new team members, nicknamed AlphaGo, had previously hiked ABC and EBC in Nepal. He was an amazing hiker, full of knowledge, humility, and a righteous manner. We truly enjoyed his company, along with his wife's.

Water is available via a hand water pump across from site #8 and the toilets are vault toilets but were well kept and did not smell horrible. The stream is gorgeous stream and loud enough to drown out most road noise. There are some hazardous trees and one 6inch tree did fall while we were there this weekend during a thunderstorm. At the back of the campground is a ~2 mile trail that connects to the AT. Most sites have a tent pad that will accommodate a 10'x10' tent. Sites 2, 4, and 8 driveways can really only accommodate 1 car and there are no extra parking spots. Driveways for sites 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10 can accommodate 2 cars. Sites 1 and 3 are adjacent to the road and is going to be impacted by road noise. There is no campground host so be prepared to either scavenge wood or buy it in town, same goes for ice.

This was one of our favorite campsites for many different reasons…read more To start out with, Phil, the owner/caretaker, is wonderful. He cares about this site and takes pride in keeping everything clean and fresh. The main bathrooms are absolutely sparkling, and every trashcan we passed was new looking with a nice lid on top, no trash on the grounds whatsoever. The rec room is really cool, nothing fancy at all of course, but Wi-fi is available throughout the campsite, and the rec room has a large TV, a ping-pong table, and ample space to enjoy yourself if the weather is not good. There is also a playground, and towards the back of the campsite a basket ball court, volleyball court, shuffle board court and a large open field. Plenty of room to run around and enjoy the day. Phil is super nice and knows many of the regular campers at this site. He will take the time to tell you about the site if you have not been there before. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the portable bathrooms down by the tent camping sites is really not the greatest. It isn't terribly old, but needs to be emptied. I believe Phil plans to build a bathroom down there, but the walk to the main facilities takes less than 5 minutes, so it wasn't of any concern to us. The tent camping sites are wonderful, flat, and surrounded by trees. They have water and electricity, if you like to use them. The game fields aforementioned are right next to the tent sites. The camp site itself is surrounded by lovely nature, and is about 10 minutes from the town, which is pretty cool. This isn't the reason why we visited but we enjoyed the nightlife in Helen. Overall, this is my favorite site. Not too popular of a campsite, overrun with thousands of campers, and has lovely ownership. What more to expect. The rest of the trip is up to you and how well you plan to spend it in the great outdoors!

We took the South Rim (At least I think it was the South Rim) and went to all 5 viewing points which is a flat walk and a round trip of about 1.5 miles. Then we went down into the Gorge which includes 1,099 steps (actual staircase) to the bottom and of course that many steps back up. You can't go all the way to the Gorge floor without a permit but that just means you can only walk down 1,089 steps to a platform. There are plenty of places to stop including a very cool suspension bridge that overlooks Hurricane Falls. This was pretty tough for a 50-year-old fat boy like me but it's doable if you can simply climb stairs. The views are amazing and worth the quads burning for the next 3 days. The visitor's center is really nice. There is of course a gift shop. a huge display of taxidermy of all the local wildlife and a very nice museum that goes through the history of the region. The most important part is they have air conditioning. Suck it up, take the stairs and buy the t-shirt saying you did it when you are done.
