For my Birthday this year, my partner took me to Rivers Edge. Having been my first time here, I had no idea what to expect. I have been to many campgrounds in the past but none that was exclusively for the LGBT community. The check in process was fast and easy, Topher really made me feel welcome and assured me that I was going to enjoy myself and being amongst the community. He was correct. We stayed in Cabin 16 which has a loft bedroom. The cabin, which is more like a tiny home was just a nice touch. After settling in, we enjoyed the deck at the cabin and so many people stopped by and introduced themselves and welcomed me. We toured the grounds which really made me feel at home as I love the great outdoors. The property is rather large with nature all around. There are trails along the creek and gravel roads all over the property. The pool area has a sun deck and a screened in hot tub. Both the pool and hot tub are open around the clock for your enjoyment. While we were on the patio outside the conference area, Topher saw us and checked in with me to make sure I was having a good time and that everything was in order in our cabin. What an unexpected nice touch as he was no longer on the clock. I had several interactions with a member of the housekeeping department. She was so pleasant to talk to and again exceeded my expectations as she asked if I was enjoying myself. Apparently when it's your first time, everyone finds out. In terms of housekeeping, this place was super clean. I am really OCD with places I stay. I even looked at the picture frames in our cabin and they were completely free of dust. It made me smile as most places we have stayed really lack this attention to detail. The meet and greet which I was told happens every Friday was well worth attending. We met so many of the other campers both regulars and also first timers. It was a great experience and I highly recommend attending this social activity. Saturday was a wash out. It stormed quite a bit with magnificent lightning which actually was enjoyable. I had not seen lightning like that in years. Despite the rain we managed to visit others at different sites and socialize. If you have never been here before, please do yourself a favor and visit. Being in a safe space amongst others who share a common thread is an experience you will never forget. We look forward to our next visit and so will you!

The wife of the owner claimed she heard me screaming for help, when I was dead asleep, and called the sheriffs on us. My guess is because she saw me drinking outside with my husband and his coworker, after my baby went to sleep for the night and she just couldnt handle minding her own business. As if I did anything wrong, drinking in the comfort of our own property. As if being a mother meant I couldnt have any fun. even though, unbeknownst to the nosy cunt, I had the worst week of my life and decided after almost a year of not drinking very much, to actually get drunk. and my husband agreed he'd get up with the baby if he got up. Not that it was any of anyone else's business. The sheriffs came, waking up Myself and little son, and left cause we did absolutely nothing wrong. And the next morning the weirdo owner, sat in his little golfcart glaring at our trailer for hours, as if we were the ones disturbing him, it was so unsettling. He was also really rude about us having an indoor cat that doesn't ever go outside, saying if he'd known he wouldn't have let us come, like tf. They were very weird the whole time we were there and maybe even prejudice, cause I'm Hispanic. They would glare at us, anytime they saw us, it was so weird. we've been traveling the whole US for years now and have never ever, had anyone be weird to us like this. We go to Elberton often, but will never give these people our money again. To the owner, I highly recommend getting medication for that stick up your ass

We were disappointed that there is no way to get to or see the lake from this spot, unless you want to hack your way thru dense woods. Not what I had pictured, but it worked out fine. We went to nearby Richard Russell State Park, had a great time on the shores of the lake just fishing and relaxing. Very beautiful area.

Cooper Creek Campground is absolutely the most beautiful, off the beaten path, places I've ever…read moretraveled and it's practically in Atlanta's back yard! Located on the beautiful and noisy Cooper/Mulky Creek just an hour north of Dahlonega up Hwy 60 and then up some of the most beautiful and winding mountain roads that make you think you're never going to get there! By the time you turn on to Forest Service Rd 236 (a beautiful and peaceful dirt mountain road that climbs up through the pine and hardwood forests), you realize there is something amazing waiting for you. And there is. Cooper Creek Campground is like reaching a little slice of heaven. Fifteen campsites scatter through out the lush forest, and five of them sit right on the banks of Cooper/Mulky Creek. I advise getting there early during the week so you can get a creek side spot ... there is nothing like it! The creek is rocky and noisy and if you fish, the trout are plentiful! I walked the loop and all of the campsites were beautiful and within easy walking distance to the creek. As a solo hiker and camper, I chose spot #1 for the way the creek opened up and the trees opened up around my tent site to give me a clear view of a beautiful moon. I also liked the quiet solitude of this site ... few cars passed here since it's on the back loop. The campground hosts also live two spots up. As an avid (delirious almost) rock stacker, I fell in love with this creek. The rocks are amazing and perfect for stacking and balancing. It was so relaxing I stacked till after dark and was up just after sunrise stacking again! The pine cones in camp are plentiful, so I got a good pine smoke going and didn't have the first mosquito or black fly. I'm telling you ... this place is heaven! After dark a bunch of deer came through my camp and lapped at the creek for almost a half hour. Two fawns frolicked in the fern thickets next to my tent for a while and were bouncing around like puppies! With the light of the moon, I felt like I had a front row seat for natures big show that night! Also, there are synchronous fireflies here, which surprised me. Just after dark during the Summer Solstice, I thought it was kids playing with flashlights, but it was fireflies, all blinking in unison! It was amazing! I can't WAIT to go back! In fact, now that I'm home, I'm missing it. Cooper Creek is open year round and keep their gates open 24 hours a day. You won't get a phone signal here, so you may as well turn it off ... the solitude is amazing! Each site has a tent pad, grills, lantern pole and a picnic table. There are also bear bins that are an easy walk from each site for discarding trash. For hikers, you won't be disappointed. There are five interconnected trails that start in or near the camping area (Yellow Mountain Trail- 3.2 miles, Connector Trail- 0.4 miles, Mill Shoals Trail- 0.9 miles, Shope Gap Trail- 0.6 miles, and Cooper Creek Trail- 1.7). I found myself hiking in and out and exploring trail after trail. The abundance of trees at Cooper Creek keep the temperatures down, much cooler than up on the main road. I paid $10 a night for my site. There are faucets for drinking water and there are two vaults for bathrooms. There are no electric hook ups or dump stations. Primitive camping at it's finest! There are no reservations ... everything is first come, first serve. Have fun everyone!

The sites seemed spacious. We found a site on the opposite side of the camp ground from the camp hosts. It was quiet and very peaceful. There are several lakes in the park as well as a walking trail and an equestrian trail. All were nice. There's also a Civil War museum / historical site. We didn't visit but it looks like a neat tour for history buffs. The park staff were all very courteous, friendly and helpful. The camp ground was very clean and the camp hosts were great. The biggest negative was the bathhouse. It was spotlessly clean but very small. They had women's toilets in the men's room and didn't even have a urinal. There were only three stalls and two small shower stalls. It appears they have cut away some of the bathhouse to use as a handicapped mens / womens room. The camp hosts said that the room is supposed to be locked except when there's someone in the handicapped camping space. So, about half the bathhouse of the only bathhouse is off limits to most campers; your ax dollars at work. I understand it's the law and even if it weren't, having handicap accessible restrooms would be the right thing to do but no one says they have to be off limits and inaccessible to the rest of the campers. That strikes me as just plain stupid regulatory over reach. However, it's not the fault of the camp. The only other negative was the train. There's a train track within a half a mile of the park. There are three trains that run daily; one during the afternoon, a second one in early evening and a third one later in the evening (believe it's around 9 p.m.) They might be a little distracting for anyone trying to hit the sack early but they weren't too distracting. I also think the campsites might be a little crowded for tent camping if the camp ground were full but we didn't run into that problem. I did read Beth M.'s review. However, we didn't smell any foul odors while we were there. Don't know if it's seasonal or if the issue's been corrected but the air was fresh and clear through our stay. Overall, the experience was excellent. We plan to go back to A.H. Stephens. If you're a camping enthusiast, give it shot! You'll probably enjoy it.

Note we had a young child with us, and I likely would have toughed it up and dealt with a lot of the issues if I'd traveled alone or just with my husband, but we had a 4 year old with us. Note also a lot of our disappointment was out of their direct control, but the entire experience was a let down either way. We checked in to our caboose cabin. We were led through the park which looked predominantly occupied by full time residents, which was odd and kind of gave the feel that I paid $500 to "camp" in a trailer park. Again, we didn't meet a sour soul there, but it looked awfully crowded and some "properties / campsites" just looked a bit junky. Although they're clearly making updates to the cabins, the massive climate control systems aren't currently hooked up, so when it's 95° outside there's a little window unit working with all its might to cool the caboose down, but it's just not getting there. The inside of the cabin was clean and really cute. Just boiling hot. So we go to the lake to cool off, but the water is the temperature of warm bath water. Not their fault. The water at the designated beach was kind of murky with old wooden posts sticking up in a few places that made me cautious about walking more than a few feet from the beach. So we didn't stay long and head back to the cabin, head out to dinner. I know this next part is out of their control, but a huge storm came through and knocked out the power for the area and there was damage in the vicinity. A falling branch came within feet of hitting my vehicle, and a larger branch fell on top of their nature center, just from what I saw. But while all the RVs had generators going, we were without power.. or water. The sink and toilet couldn't be used, no power meant the temperature was rising again inside the cabin, and while opening the door provided some relief, there were mosquitoes aplenty. I tried opening a window but somehow brought down the blinds in the process. We waited about 2 hours, but my toddler wasn't going to hang. I packed the car in the dark and rain and headed home. Again, I could have made it work solo, but it was an overall disappointment with my son there. I'm hoping to get a refund for at least part of my stay, as again, the prices paid for the cabin alone vs. overall aesthetic of the park was immediately disappointing.

No one was camping or fishing or wandering the grounds (though I did see one park ranger pickup truck on patrol), which meant I had time with the real centerpiece of the park, the Watson Mill Covered Bridge, and the soft sound of the river underneath it carried farther than usual in the damp air. The bridge was built in 1885 by W. W. King, one of Georgia's most skilled nineteenth century bridge builders, and it remains the longest existing covered bridge in the state at 236 feet. It uses the Town lattice truss system, a design patented in 1820 that relies on a crisscross pattern of planks secured with wooden pegs, and Watson Mill is one of the best surviving examples of that method in the Southeast. The bridge once served the workers of the grist mill and sawmill that stood nearby, and it doubled as a community gathering place where people held picnics and even square dances. The Georgia Department of Transportation restored it in 1973, and the bridge became the anchor for the surrounding state park, which preserves both the structure and the landscape that supported it. The posted clearance was too low for my Sprinter van so I walked the length of the bridge instead, letting the boards creak underfoot and taking in the smell of wet timber that always feels older than the structure itself. There is no dedicated pedestrian lane, but the interior is wide enough that I could step to the side when a car approached, and the drivers moved slowly enough that it never felt unsafe. The combination of the rain, the quiet, and the long wooden tunnel made the whole experience feel like stepping back into the late nineteenth century for a few minutes.
