During the most vulnerable…read moretime of our lives, when my mother was in her final stages of life, most of the staff showed a shocking level of insensitivity, disrespect, and lack of basic human empathy. The individual assigned to wash and comb my mother's hair was incredibly rude and pulled her hair roughly, treating her as if she wasn't even a human being. I had to report her conduct to the nurse. To make matters worse, while my mother was actively dying, a male staff member who came to switch shifts with another worker started laughing and making fun of her snoring right in front of us. Seeing a worker make fun of a dying patient during her final hours was heartbreaking and infuriating. Throughout our experience, the nurses and staff spoke to us and evaluated my mother without an ounce of compassion, treating her like a task rather than a person. The only person who showed true compassion and kindness was the bereavement counselor / medical social worker (the therapist). Hospice care should provide dignity and comfort to every patient, but overall, Vitas provided coldness and disrespect. I would never recommend this company to anyone.

When my father-in-law went into the hospital in critical condition and then transitioned to comfort care, we weren't sure what we were going to do to about where he could pass. He was not able to return home and we live in San Diego far from the community who would want to be near his bedside during this sacred time. Then, they told us about this hospice house. It was smack dab in the middle of Tustin where his entire community is. He was in his own room. Everyone that came in introduced themselves to him, even though he couldn't respond, and told him what they were going to do to care for him. They provided snacks, beverages, and a separate sitting area for families when taking a break from the bedside. They allow people to sleep overnight to be near their loved one. No restrictions on visiting. A volunteer came and sang to him. A chaplain visited and prayed with him. They've offered to make memory bears out of his shirts. It was really a beautiful place for him to be. We are so grateful and appreciative.

I was grossly disappointed with Care Choices' Hospice service. To start with, their contract and…read moremarketing materials are materially misleading, and internally inconsistent, in terms of the care that they actually provided. Their representative rushed me through the sign-up process without any clear explanation of the services that they were going to provide. Specifically, their communication to the parties involved (Assisted Living, the attending physician, and me) was vague, ambiguous, inconsistent, and confusing at a time when job descriptions should be crystal clear. It is Care Choices' responsibility to coordinate care and especially to make sure that "their" patient is being properly attended to. Hospice services are not just to provide a hospital-style bed and a wheelchair. As a direct result of Care Choices' lack of clarity, the Hospice service was waiting for the attending physician to treat, the attending physician was waiting for Hospice to treat, and the family was waiting for the patient to receive necessary care on a prompt basis. As it was, the patient's care was overly delayed, which caused the patient medical distress and the family members completely unnecessary emotional distress.

The doctor's involvement felt casual and strictly part-time, providing minimal proactive guidance when complex situations arose. To make matters worse, simple administrative accuracy was lacking--we had to deal with errors on the death certificate, which caused unnecessary delays and added stress during an already overwhelming time. End-of-life care requires dependable communication, attention to detail, and active physician leadership. I urge you to carefully consider this before contracting with any hospice provider. Unfortunately, our experience with Faith & Hope made an already painful situation even harder. In April 2025, my mom suffered a massive stroke. She was placed under Continuous Care (CC), which meant she required critical, around-the-clock nursing support. We were told her case would be re-evaluated after three days. However, the care was stopped in less than 24 hours and we were given only 4 hours' notice that services would be discontinued. At that point, it was clear our needs no longer aligned with Faith & Hope's philosophy of care. We scrambled to hire private help on extremely short notice. That night, my mom was in significant pain & experienced agitation. She needed her medication adjusted and an increase of the dosage frequency to help manage her symptoms. The next day, we made final attempts to Faith & Hope to reassess mom's eligibility for CC, even though the on-call night nurse, when we asked, did acknowledge that we were free to seek another hospice provider. We waited all day for a response from Faith & Hope, but heard nothing. Faced with another evening without adequate care, we transferred my mom to a different hospice. They gave us the right care without hesitation. Sadly, our mom passed away only 4 days later. The only positive experience we had with Faith & Hope was with Nurse Theresa. She cared for my mom with compassion, dedication and a true commitment to patient advocacy. Theresa's thoughtfulness and support helped guide my brothers and me through an incredibly challenging time, and for that we are deeply grateful.
