These women know what they are doing. After having a baby you are so vulnerable so being able to consult with someone about nursing is such a relief. I went in several times for the weekly weigh-ins for my first born. I was able to breastfeed him until he was a little over 2 years old. I also went in for my daughter and they were very helpful. My husband and I did the lamaze classes pre-covid and they were great. If you are a first time mom or need refresher i definitely recommend Healthy Beginnings. read more

5 stars for the new moms group, other classes, and supplies available here! Michelle Manning is very friendly and welcoming and makes you feel validated as a new mom. You just have to hope you get a good group of moms that want to continue hanging out and make the extra effort. It's very nice to have some other moms to talk to and meet with that are going through similar experiences. My sister is still friends with her moms group 8 years later! My group was slowly less and less "available" and I've had to develop other mom friends elsewhere. :( 1 star for the breastfeeding clinic. The lactation clinic staff was also very friendly, but from what I and other moms I know experienced, unless breastfeeding goes perfectly for you and your baby they are going to have you jumping through hoops to breastfeed. After several visits seeking help I was finally told that if I wanted to breastfeed I'd have to take my baby to an occupational therapist to learn how to compress her tongue. After exclusively pumping for 2.5 months I finally just started breastfeeding my daughter on my own and after a few tries she figured it out. We now breastfeed just fine and she's in the 95th percentile for her weight, 75th for height, so she obviously has no issue getting enough milk the way she feeds. I would not recommend seeking help here. Instead it would be worth it to hire a lactation consultant in your home or find another place. They were also not very knowledgeable or helpful with my baby's jaundice. The staff was much more paranoid than my babies pediatrician and made me feel like a bad first time parent because things weren't going as THEY thought it should be. The BEST decision I made was to give up on the clinic and use Dr Google along with my own determination to make breastfeeding work. It was SOOOOO much easier once we started breastfeeding exclusively and I wish I'd followed my instincts from day 1 instead of seeking out the "help" here. read more

Healthy beginnings provided a really neat experience for us to learn as new parents. We attended Newborn classes and my wife went to several moms group meetings at this location. Everything we went to was great and full of learning. One of the teachers was especially great, Michelle. She taught well, brought humor and did so in a friendly environment. We are now with Kaiser and they don't offer anything like what healthy beginnings has. We originally found out about them from the hospital across the street. They really do provide a good experience for new parents and moms. read more

Chelle! She is such an awesome support coach and without her leadership I don't know if I would have found my lifeline. My mom group are now my best girls that I can vent to and be in this journey together. My daughter is now 9 months and it's so wonderful to see the babies grow together. I went to Healthy Beginnings with all 3 kids and had a wonderful experience. I forgot what to do for each one, and they were very patient in reteaching me how to do everything. I loved that they weighed my boys in between feedings to make sure they were getting enough. It put me at ease. And they were able to check the jaundice levels. I went to the breastfeeding class with Ashley H before baby was born, and she was very knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. I had a lot of fears and she put me at ease. I would highly recommend going to these classes to give you the confidence you need when baby finally comes. read more

This place has the most knowledgeable and supportive staff. I was lucky to come across some info for them about two years ago when I had my son. Breastfeeding was not as intuitive as I had imagined and my husband was very concerned that our baby would cry because he was still hungry. We went for a private lactation session and reviewed holding techniques, checked his latch and he was weighed before and after a nursing session. He was doing great, but having some guidance and confirming it was all going ok gave us peace of mind. While there, I also noticed they had a new mom's group beginning the following week. I called Michelle Manning and signed up for the 6 week (I think it was 6 weeks) / once a week group. Having other moms who were going through the same experience to talk to was key to my sanity! Michelle is also one of the most caring leaders and is a wealth of knowledge. I'm thankful she lead our discussions. Healthy beginnings has staff that are highly educated in all types of feeding and baby care and I would highly recommend (and have recommended to many new mom friends). They are also part of the San Antonio hospital, so always remain in the know on current care and health advisories. I first came to this place when I had my first son 4 years ago. I loved that they were ready to help me learn how to breastfeed. I never once felt uncomfortable since I knew all the other women there were in the same boat as me. Being among other new mom's learning like me helped me feel better about me struggling. Thanks to these lovely ladies I was able to breastfeed my oldest for 2 years. After I had my second I went back since to have a refresher course. And I loved my mother group I was in! I was a brand new mom not knowing what to do and I got to meet other new mom's in my same situation I still keep in contact with them 4 years later! I'm really surprised to see bad reviews for this place. I came here a few days after the birth of our first and was given helpful information on breastfeeding. The ladies there told me about a mom support group with Michelle manning for mom's and their newborns. I wasn't sure what to expect and was really nervous. Plus all those emotions after giving birth! Lol. So I took the class and let me tell you it was so helpful. A great place to meet other new mom's and know that you are not alone. Talk about your experiences and ask questions in a non judgemental environment. Michelle is very informative and I wish I would have taken other classes with her to prepare for the baby! Now I'm on my second pregnancy and I am so sad I live out of state and can't take her classes! read more

I'm a father with a child from a previous marriage and have another baby on the way with my new wife. I've gone through "Infant Care" and "Birthing" class at another hospital (Huntington in Pasadena), and now I've gone through the same classes here. Infant Care class I forget the name of the instructor for this class, but she was very nice and the class was small, meaning we had lots of time for questions, discussion, going deeper into topics of interest, etc. The information they presented was great, but it skipped a few tips that the other infant care class I've taken really hammered on, namely the "Happiest Baby on the Block" technique for soothing a crying, fussy baby. I found that to be so helpful, I made sure to tell all the other Dads in class to go look it up on YouTube. My only real complaint, and I don't want this to be more "shaming" than it needs to be, was the way they used gendered language to imply the parent who would be the primary caregiver. Specifically, the language in the class said things like: "Mom, when you call the pediatrician, be sure to tell them THIS" or "Mom, when you're doing a feeding, be sure to yada yada", etc. Sometimes, the language was "parents" or "Mom and Dad", but the majority of the language was instructions to Mom, despite the fact that Dads were present in the room. In a setting where a new mother and a new father are learning to care for their newborn child, using language that defaults to pushing a mother into a primary role and a father in a secondary role already subliminally defines the roles, placing more weight on one parent and reducing the weight on the other parent's role. I would say this is a fluke, but it's pervasive across our culture (in America? Globally? Humanity?) that on the scales with mother on one side and father on the other, the scales are tipped towards the mother. Personally, I resent that bias, and honestly believe both parents should seek to balance the scales at all times. Simply put: both parents, in this case mother and father, should actively engage and participate in their child's life to the point where if one of them goes out of town, the other doesn't need a lengthy legal pad with notes of when the baby wakes up, how much formula, which outfit to wear, what's the routine, what's the ritual for laying them to sleep, etc. Don't be the parent that needs notes about how your family functions. Mother or father. Perpetuating the language of specific gender roles is an easy thing to fix, and I'm hoping I'm the only one in those classrooms that takes exception to how that information is presented. Literally all they need to do is remember to include Dad into their directions: "Mom and Dad, when you call the pediatrician, be sure to mention yada yada...." "Birthing Class" The birthing classes had plenty of information, in many ways, more information than the other class I had taken at Huntington. I understand no classes are perfect, and you take information as it comes. However, there were moments where I felt the instructor Monica was pushing a specific agenda, namely a more "natural" approach: breast feeding over formula, minimal or no pain intervention over pain intervention, etc. I can appreciate that, in a medical setting, they want to push the angle that is most medically appropriate, which is generally the most natural approach. However, it seemed like the instructor wanted to be certain that people knew the negatives of possibly non-natural intervention without ever discussing potential complications with refusing medical interventions. Everything seemed to be "Sure you CAAAAAN do this other thing, but here are some of the problems that can lead to." The approval and assurances that non-natural paths were minimal compared to the potential drawbacks and problems created with non-natural paths were imbalanced. (Not a real quote): "Sure, formula is OK, but breast milk is just SO MUCH BETTER for the baby, and it help you [mom] lose weight and bond and so much more." You're creating a wealth of positives that are only derived from breast feeding that mothers who don't want to breast feed are passively knocked for their decision AND mothers who can't breastfeed are left to dwell on the notion their flaws are doing their baby some harm. I think most people are aware that "natural" paths are probably the best, but maintaining instructions and information that tout BOTH the pro's and con's should be the goal of an educational class in a medical/health setting. Just one Dad's review. The classes are worth it, but as you'll discover, EVERYTHING with a grain of salt. Don't go here if you want latch support. They will turn to formula the moment your baby is not following the weight gain schedule. Even though breastfed babies can gain between 5-9 ounces a week. DONT TAKE THE SUPPLEMENTS THEY RECOMMEND, THEY CONTAIN Fenugreek which is know to cause awful gas for your little one. Try something fenugreek free. My long awaited review. Where do I begin. I went in at around 4 weeks PP needing help with latch. I also went in knowing very little. After a weighted feed I was just shy of 2oz. I was told how to latch my son and told all of the things I was doing wrong, like letting him latch as long as he wanted. During the portion where we latched him I was told he has bad habits that he learned in the first 4 weeks, not the greatest choice of words for a new mom. I was already feeling lost and defeated but was determined to make it work. After the feed my baby was immediately handed supplemental formula and I was told he wasn't gaining quite as much as he should be. Although I was never told what his weight was and my doctor who we saw the week prior had no concerns over his weight. I was told to pump right after I fed for 15 minutes. My son was so upset with this new routine and my gut was telling me it wasn't right. After I did a little research and learned how important flange sizing is I brought mine in to the next appointment. The consultant took one glance at my flanges and said they're fine and that bigger is fine. WRONG. so wrong. The attitude of the first consultant was mediocre at best and made me feel like I was a failure. The second one was nice but had no idea what she was talking about. I left believing I was under supplying. I ended up going to Milky Mama in Rancho and paying out of pocket, but it was so worth it. They helped me with latch, told me I was doing great and to let my baby latch as long as he wanted because it helps stimulate milk production as well as bonding. I now have a freezer stash and my son is doing great. read more

I LOVED the birth prep class here! Michelle Manning was the coach and she was awesome! This was not a class my husband or I were looking forward to, but we ended up really enjoying it and learning a lot. Michelle has a great sense of humor which really made the class fun, and I left the course feeling very well prepared mentally. I have also taken advantage of the lactation consultants here, and really appreciate the option to come with baby and nurse. It's important to be able to get that support with breastfeeding. read more

This place was a life saver before and after I had my baby. Chelle was an amazing teacher/instructor for my labor and delivery class as well as my Mommy's Group instructor (after birth). I'm so happy I utilized all the classes (labor/delivery, first aid/CPR, breastfeeding) that I did. I learned a lot and they were very inexpensive for the knowledge you get and so worth it. After I gave birth I utilized the clinic area to have my baby weigh in and see also how I was doing with breastfeeding. I hate that I cant remember the ladies name (Anne?) Stay away from the lactation course. This review is for the lactation course only. All other courses have been informative and balanced (although very repetitive). Unfortunately, the lactation course lives up the "boob nazi" stereotype and it is exceedingly disappointing. I had assumed the course included practical advice on how to breastfeed, such as positioning, latch techniques, etc., but this is a very small portion of the two-hour course. Nearly the entire first hour is aimed indoctrinating women about the alleged "pros" of breastfeeding by distorting findings of scientific studies to make outlandish claims such as "babies who are breastfed have higher IQs" and "babies who are breastfed get sick less often." All of these inaccurate and misleading claims are made without any reference to the actual studies themselves, the fact that these studies are observational, and thus can only reveal an association or correlation, NOT causation (meaning these studies do not and cannot stand for the proposition that breastfeeding increases an infants IQ), and absolutely no mention of the inherent flaws in these studies, including the inability to control for confounding factors like socioeconomic status of the mother and high drop out rate (in the Brazil IQ study) that can, and do, skew the study's reliability. All of these claims are made under the guise of medical authority by having a practicing nurse teach the course and spout this nonsense. It is outrageous and medically irresponsible to deliver misleading information. They are essentially bullying women who are in a very vulnerable state and who are trying to do one of the most important things they will ever do: raise a child. What is left unsaid with all of this nonsense, (or perhaps is even said directly when they tell you the cannot discuss bottle feeding or pumping because they are "baby friendly") is the judgment that you are somehow harming your baby or a subpar mother if you choose not to, or cannot, exclusively breastfeed (which is simply not true ladies). It is an odd hard-sell for breastfeeding to people who have paid to take a course on breastfeeding (meaning they are already interested in it); they treat it like we showed up for the free TV and they are selling us a timeshare. The sad truth is more women would actually be helped and supported with breastfeeding if they limited it to tips and practical advice. They do not even have to discuss pacifiers or formula or pumps or the dreaded combination feeding. In sum, I know I will not be seeking assistance here if I end up having trouble breastfeeding and since these women also have privileges at the nearby hospital, I will not be using their services when I give birth either. Needless to say I left the course incensed without having heard a word they said because they had lost all credibility from the very start. Apparently my disdain was palpable and they called my husband the next day to inquire. I will assume they are not THAT paternalistic and instead conclude his number was the most readily accessible, although I have my doubts as I am the one who signed up for the course and subsequently paid for the course with my credit card information and phone number. read more

I have breastfed three children and I've been to this lactation clinic with my youngest two babies over the course of five years. I think the consultants have positive intentions, but my experience was not the best. With my oldest child at a different clinic the LC examined her mouth and looked for tongue tie, checked her pallet and suck reflex. Not one time over the 6 visits I've had with my two youngest children did they ever look in their mouth at this place. Baby needs to have a fully functioning mouth anatomy to make breastfeeding successful. When a baby does not meet their standards of weight gain they are quick to suggest supplementing with formula using the SNS rather than checking for lip or tongue tie and encouraging moms to pump and feed baby the pumped milk. They suggested supplementing with formula to myself with both babies and every single mother I saw there. It made me feel like I wasn't producing enough, when in actuality all I needed to do was give it a few more days for my milk to fully come in and also get my youngest's lip tie revised so they could be more efficient at the breast. They also base weight gain off of birth weight rather than what babies 24 hour post delivery weight is which is more accurate due to fluid intake by mother during labor. They don't take into consideration gestational age as well. Babies born early (like mine) sometimes have a harder time latching. I will say that even though they are patient, helpful with latching and allow you to stay as long as needed to feed and weigh baby some of the comments and suggestions can be detrimental to a new mom. The most hurtful comment I got was from the LC Gerry. She told me I needed to come back three days later to weigh baby to make sure she was gaining enough because and her exact words were "we all know babies with busy families are known to be underfed" I have never been so insulted in my life! Luckily, we also have kaiser insurance and even though I had to drive to Fontana to see their LC I was able to get an appointment two days after Gerry made that comment. There was no way I would go back for a weight check after the way I was belittled. It was night and day difference. The first thing kaiser did was check her mouth and sure enough they diagnosed her posterior tongue tie. Rather than suggest formula Kaiser covered the cost of a hospital grade pump and suggested I pump more often and supplement with my milk! My baby is now three months old, we had her lip tie revised and she is exclusively fed from the breast all thanks to the Kaiser LC for offering the correct advice! Please do your research and seek out a second opinion if you are told to supplement at this place! read more

I can't say enough how amazing Healthy Beginnings is and how wonderful and caring the staff are here. I didn't give birth at San Antonio, but my pediatrician recommended I take my son there to monitor him since he was jaundiced. On my first visit, they found out that not only was he severely jaundiced, but he had also lost way too much weight (their scales are more accurate than the ped scales, and they weigh babies properly there). They worked with us on nursing/feeding and said to bring him back in 2 days (they were closed the next day). They continued to work with us but after a few more days and visits, he was still not gaining weight. I broke down and cried in front of them, fearing I would lose my baby. They saw my concern and were SO compassionate, they called a NICU doctor and immediately got my son the help he needed - they even walked us over to the hospital. Seriously, they may be in angels in disguise because without them I'm not sure he would have gotten the help he needed to thrive and become the healthy baby he is today. I could truly never thank them enough for their expertise and compassion. After my son was discharged from the NICU (he had a host of things going on that he needed help with), we went to the New Mom Group there. Chellie Manning is AMAZING (by the way, I had been put in touch with her when I was pregnant, and she was the one who convinced me to go to the hospital after 24 hours of what turned out to be back labor and a maternal fever). She gives such good education and advice, but the class is also a place to come together just to vent and share and feel less alone in the tough early days of motherhood. God is using these women and this place for good and I am forever grateful. read more

I loved my experience at Healthy Beginnings. I visited their lactation center one week postpartum and learned so much! I was in tons of pain and producing bloody milk but the nurse helped by showing me how to use a nipple shield, worked on my nursing hold, and gave me a pacifier that is breastfeeding friendly! I learned so much and we never had any issues breastfeeding beyond that visit. I also participated in birthing classes and parenting classes at this facility before giving birth. They were informative and to the point. My favorite experience was the postpartum mommy group. I learned a lot of just-in-time info about newborn development and even about some good books and helpful apps. The groups meet for 10 weeks but my group contributed to meet for about 6 months. Healthy Beginnings was a lifesaver for me! My journey with Healthy Beginnings started with my birthing classes. Michelle was an exceptional teacher and made the classes so entertaining. After I had my baby, I joined a moms group through the center. I met the most amazing women and are still friends 4 years later. Michelle also taught this class and made it so much fun and gave me something to look forward to every week. I could not have gotten through my first few weeks of motherhood without the amazing help of all of the ladies! All of my numerous visits to the center were beyond a positive experience. I had many frustrating nights with both of my newborns and counted down the hours until the center opened. Every single visit was so reassuring that I wasn't failing as a new mom. I loved the fact that I could go in and get my baby weighed to be sure they were gaining weight and eating well. It was so nice relating to other new moms that were in my same situation. Gail was so friendly when I first came in. I felt that she took the time to listen and really get to know me. I still continue to attend the different classes that are offered at the center. I have also kept in contact with Michelle and find myself reaching out to her often for parenting advice. My fiancé and I took the birthing class, breastfeeding class and I joined the moms group after I had my baby. I'm a FTM and am really glad I took these classes. We used the breathing techniques that were taught during labor. My dr seemed really glad that I did those too! I myself am really appreciative of the breastfeeding class. I had no expectations but with the things I learned bfing wasn't as hard as I expected. I really liked the moms group after the most. I was paired with moms who have babies around the same birth month. And now, months later we all still talk and have meet ups with the babies. Healthy beginnings prepared me for motherhood more so than any advice or experience I previously faced!!! I had the opportunity to attend classes during my first pregnancy that prepared me for labor and delivery, early motherhood days, cpr and so on. After giving birth I found support from their breastfeeding experts as well as that of other new moms in a moms group! As my child has grown I was able to take parenting classes that I found equally helpful!!! I now have my third child and still use and recommend others use the information and skills I have obtained from healthy beginnings!!! Taking courses with Healthy beginnings was by far one of the best decisions I made as a new mom, my husband and I took the breastfeeding, labor and baby CPR class. They were so helpful and prepared us by giving us the knowledge we needed to advocate for ourselves when in labor. I found out about the classes at Healthy Beginnings through SARH. It has been such a good resource to have, especially as a first time mom. I have taken the childbirth, breastfeeding, and infant cpr classes here. Additionally, I went after childbirth to the clinic and joined a new moms group which has been a great experience. Healthy Beginnings offers so many wonderful classes to benefit FTM and partners. My partner and I took the childbirth classes which were so helpful. The instructor really prepared us both for signs of labor and how to deal with the "pain with a purpose" I especially appreciated the breastfeeding class. We learned signs of milk transfer, position and the most importantly how to latch the baby on. Jennifer was our instructor and she really helped guide us on what to expect. After Leaving the class I felt empowered and knew I had a support system in place for me. After my LO was born I visited the feeding clinic and everyone there is so wonderful. The girls are all Registered Nurses and IBCLC. I recommend this place to everyone I care about . read more

I found out about Healthy Beginnings during my hospital tour. My husband and I took just about every class available before the birth of our daughter. They really helped prepare us! I also LOVED attending moms group with Chelle! As a new mom, I was so anxious about leaving the house with a newborn and making mom friends in addition to having PPD and feeling lost and afraid. Being in a group with other new moms, hearing their struggles and victories, seeing everyone's babies and making friendships helped me so much! I loved it so much, I joined again when my son was born! I also took full advantage of the lactation consultants being there to help with breast feeding. My daughter had a bad latch, which I didn't realize until I took her in after weeks of painful nursing. I loved the birth coaching from the instructor. She gave me info I was afraid of and how to be ready for just incase. The mommy group after was an amazing way to get out of the house and feel like breast feeding was 100% acceptable helped me ease my anxiety about 1. Nursing in public and 2. Going out with a new baby by myself. Lots of support and education. It also helped knowing that if I wanted to see how much breast milk my son was getting, they would allow me to go in and do a feed weigh in to ease my mind! Highly recommended! read more

Something they don't mention at the hospital is their breastfeeding "help" takes place in a room full of other ladies breastfeeding. Boobs everywhere. Don't bother taking your husbands bc they will be left out in the waiting room the entire time. I took my baby in for a jaundice check and was given dirty looks bc I didn't feel comfortable breastfeeding in the setting they provided. My daughter also had a pacifier in at the time and it fell on the ground. I was told by one of the ladies that they do not have a sink to wash the pacifier off. Apparently they are anti pacifiers..They are so pro breastfeeding it's very uncomfortable even for the breastfeeding mom. They stuff their opinions of how often, how long and how to position your baby according to their standards. If you're comfortable with the way YOU breastfeed and YOUR baby is growing I suggest skip this step bc all they will do is make you feel like a bad parent. On the other hand I like that they have the ability to check jaundice. read more

This place was amazing I attended birth classes, lactation class and mom's group...all were amazing classes for a first time mom. When I got negative advice from my son's pediatrician on breastfeeding they reassured me that I was doing everything necessary for my son. But by far mom's group was the best part of this organization Michelle M. Was the best instructor and she created a upon and sharing atmosphere...not only did we discuss baby but we discussed relationships. I have made some life long friendships around this group! I have taken the child birth preparation course which was amazing and informative, I have taken the breastfeeding class with Michelle Manning and learned all about different ways to hold and latch, as well as how to store and how long milk was good for, and I have also utilized the lactation coaches after both of my children were born. Everyone was supportive and helped me through some of the most emotional moments in my life. I also did took the moms group with my newborn son and it was the best decision I ever made. Those moms are some of my best friends now. I tell everyone I know who is expecting to attend classes and groups at Healthy Beginnings! read more
