Robert's Shop "Headquarters Hats" is a boot / hat junkies' dream come true. The smell of REAL LEATHER is almost as amazing as the selection. I've always wanted a pair of Lucchese boots, but they've always been beyond my budget. Robert had a few styles of Lucchese ostrich boots at a price I couldn't pass up. But price isn't why I'll drive two hours back to HQ Hats for my next pair of boots, hat or a belt -- it's the service. He and his staff took the time to fit me properly, and give me a concise lesson in the care and feeding of my new investment. I pass hundreds of boot shops every day in central TX, but none of them come close to providing the level of customer service I received from Robert and his staff. I was in Fredericksburg for Labor Day Weekend hoping to find a broad brim hat. I went into Headquarters Hat and they were very busy. I talked to several employees and they were all fantastic. They were courteous, knowledgeable and patient with me and my questions. When I finally asked Ken if he had any hats that met my description, he took straight to a hat, picked one up and handed it to me. It fit perfectly (and I have a larger than normal head). I was fortunate enough to meet the owner Rob in Florida during a car deal. We Ended up working a Straw hat into the purchase. Well let me tell you what! My stamina, and self confidence is through the roof with this new hat! If I didn't have a significant other this hat would surely get me in some serious trouble. January 20th my wife and I walked in, and we were immediately greeted, I asked to see the Lucchese boots to which we were brought back. Everything was fine, our questions were answered, Dylan (or maybe Tyler) was great!! I ended up purchasing a 1300 dollar pair of Pirarucu boots (I found after the fact that Lucchese sold them for 895) but whatever, I knew I was going to pay more but 400 bucks?? However that's not my complaint. I'm all about buying local.. A couple of days later I realize that these boots are not in the original box, nor do I have care instructions for them. I contacted Lucchese, to see if I could by chance get some care instruction and what the possibility was of getting a box. Lucchese instructed me to call Headquarter Hat (as my Lucchese Rep was very familiar with the store) and ask to speak with the owner, if not the owner, a manager and to please call her back. So I did, I called and the Owner wasn't there so I got Violet (the manager) on the phone, I explained to Violet about my heartburn over the boots and was there anything that could possibly be done about this dilemma. Needless to say I was flat out lied too, I was told that "only like half of our Lucchese's come with boxes and none of them come with care instructions." I asked her none of them? She replied, "none". I continued on and asked if none of them come with care instructions why do I have care instructions for alligator? Violet replied, "Huh, I don't know what to say", because I just caught her in a lie. It was great, I just spent a good amount of money to a company for a pair of boots and got no care instruction nor original box AND the MANAGER flat out lies to me. I know it was lie due to my conversation with Lucchese and its completely the opposite of what I was told. Lucchese says that 100% of there boots comes with a box specifically for that boot and 100% of them come with care instructions attached to the pull strap. This upset Lucchese twice, the first because for (in Lucchese's words) for 1300 hundred bucks they damn well should've came with the box and instructions, which brings me to the second time. Not all boots are created equal!, different leathers require different care, cowhide is different from ostrich, alligator, exotic fish ect. There are different methods for cleaning and preserving and to spend that amount and to not get the care instructions in insanity, luckily the Rep I've been in contact with about this issue was able to get some care instructions for me. Needless to say I WILL NOT BE BUYING FROM THE STORE AGAIN. I could have ordered the boots and lowered my cost by 400 bucks and received the original box and care instructions. If You dont care about the box or instruction then go and speak with Dylan he's great! But that manager Violet is lacking in every department a manager needs. To just flat out lie to a customer, past or present and/or potentially future is beyond appalling. Its a direct reflection of the store and owner. read more

Wife and I found HH about 3 1/2 yrs ago during the Easter Holiday's. We picked an egg out of the basket and it led us to purchase 2 pair of Lucchese boots. Over the past several years we have always found our way back here for several reasons: 1. The selection of boots & hats here is something you will not find anywhere else especially in the big box stores. 2. The customer service is second to none, always putting the customer first and spending time with you as your looking to find just the right item. 3. The owner Rob is first and foremost a super nice guy and knows his stuff when it comes to fitting you with the look and style that compliments your body type etc. We live in the Houston area and have opportunities to buy western attire from other locations but due to the customer service, support and hands down best selection of items we will be making all of our western wear purchases from Rob at HQ Hats. This shop has a phenomenal selection of handmade cowboy boots. If you are visiting and want a pair of boots better quality than Cavenders, a chainstore for boots, this is the place. I have been eyeing cowboy boots, living in Austin for 10 years now, I finally found it! the staff, Robert and Berta, were very helpful, explained all the difference between handmade, machine made and a hybrid of the two types. They said, "you know it's a top of the line quality when it's made in this manner..".. and they gave a very detailed explanation... "if a bootstore can't explain this"..another very detailed long explanation.., "then you need to think twice." Well. I read the bad reviews...what can I say, Fredericksburg has a problem with people coming into stores and stealing. This store has high dollar merchandise just sitting out. So I can't blame them for watching people. If you feel like they are treating you like you are about to steal, maybe you should change your approach. Anyway, I've bought quite a few hats from this place. They have hats you can not find everywhere. Most recently, I bought an LBJ style Stetson hat in Grey, never even seen one before!!! The staff helped me right away, shaped my hat for free, and all the while saved me about $30 from what I had seen this hat (in other colors) listed for online. They also have a great selection of superior quality boots. So. All in all, if you are looking for a place to buy unique items that you can't find easily elsewhere, go here. If you are looking to buy a $10 straw hat and a pair of plastic boots, Walmart might be a better location to shop. I would highly recommend this place to any of my friends!!! read more

My husband and I went into this shop on Saturday, June 15, 2014, because he was looking for a new hat for work, big mistake! Yes, the staff greeted us as we walked in but as my husband reached for a hat to look at it, out of no where here comes an employee watching us like a hawk. She literally stood a couple of feet from us eyeing us and it made my husband feel so uncomfortable that he put the hat back and wanted to leave. We were checking out game day boots and tried out a few different styles when the owner pointed out a beautiful pair of Lucchese boots he had designed. They were a bunch of teens who sat there talking badly about other customers and while we were looking at some cowboy hats in the back room 2 of the teens came running back there and pushed my 4 year old who already has hard time standing. Being a "cowboy" of short stature and carrying a few extra pounds, it has been hard for me to find a hat that really looks good on me. I found a Stetson that I really liked and at a great price. I asked the owner, Robert Waight, for his opinion. He told me that the color was good, but that a narrower brim would help, given my build ( or lack thereof). No problem, said Robert. He took the hat in the back and took a half inch off the width of the brim; and he did it in about 2-3 minutes! In looking at the brim, no modification was discernible, but a what a difference it made in the mirror! Robert saId he's been dealing in and modifying hats for 20-some years. He told me how to properly store the hat, brush the hat, and provided other advice, e.g. Don't wear it at the dinner table! Keep after it Robert! Seeing somebody wearing a hat at the table is a pet peeve of mine, too. If you want personalized and professional service, this is the place!! read more

The staff is the nicest and most helpful people ever. David was the staff member who was helping me and he was amazing. I was trying to find a good cowboy hat for work and he made sure I found a hat that was perfect for me, even after I had somewhat decided on a hat, instead of just letting me buy it he came back with cheaper options that were more my style and that he knew I was looking for. I have long enjoyed visiting the hill country and my wife and I go there as often as we can to enjoy the scenery, wine, beer and great food! Every time we go, we visit a particular western haberdashery known as Headquarters Hats, on Main Street. I must confess, that I have more pairs of boots than any grown man needs, and over the past couple of years have purchased several pairs of prime Lucchesse boots from the proprietor, Robert Waight for me and my wife. I have also purchased several very reasonably priced Stetson hats (as the name implies, they have quite a selection). On my last visit in October of 2015, I purchased a black wool fedora style Stetson, which quickly became my favorite. Unfortunately, recently I inadvertently left it at a restaurant. When I returned the next day to retrieve it the manager gave me the "hat, what hat?" reply. It was clear it was gone, and I had grown very attached to this particular hat. As a last resort, I wrote Rob. I received an almost immediate e-mail response and later the same evening, he was sending me a replacement, same model, same size. This is way above and beyond the call and much more than I would have ever expected from your "garden variety" western wear store. While I may have been an occasional, but albeit good customer, Rob went way out of his way. I would be totally remiss if I did not tell everyone I know that for the best selection, VALUE (you can't beat his prices), service (before AND after the sale) you cannot beat Headquarters Hats, Fredericksburg, Texas! Everything is overpriced by 25-40%. Take a short drive to San Antonio and save yourself some money. In addition, a store employee will closely follow you and literally watch you from 2 feet behind while you look at hats - without speaking a word to you. I looked inside two different hats to check the size and I noticed hand written notes that read "Thieves will be caught" or something to that effect. I concur with other reviews here, this is very creepy. I suppose the store may have had thefts in the past but they are scaring away paying customers. I suspect that other reviewers here are friends of the store owners being that the towns are so close. read more

I feel in love with it, the awesome service, and their beautiful Lucchese wedding boots! I decided not to buy them in order to shop around a little bit more. I called the store on a Sunday to see if they still had the boots in my size, and to my relief, they did! Wandered into HQ Hat about 5 years ago, found a Gus style straw they call "Cisco" that caught my eye and it has turned into my favorite hat. Unfortunately it's gotten sweated and snagged by mesquite over the years. I liked it so much I tried to have it replicated without success so when we went to Fredericksburg recently I stopped in to get another but they didn't have my size. Robert placed it on order but said the factory was going on vacation and it would be about 8 weeks. He "pulled some strings" and I had it within a week---thanks! The owner really cares about his customers and a visit to his shop revealed a MASSIVE inventory that is far and above the western stores in Kerrville, San Antonio and 3 stores I tried in Houston. I went into the store looking for a pair of Lucchese boots that I have seen online and was going to order from Boot Barn. The owner said he didn't have that pair of boots at the store, but he was going to see what he could do. He was able to order the exact pair of boots I wanted, and even gave me a discount on the price since I went to him instead. I cannot appreciate enough what he was able to do for me!
