First of all-- Martha Ellen & her team are Brooklyn's curly hair saviors. The Headchop studio in Williamsburg deserves the biggest shoutout. I have unique hair-- curly, fine but thick, so it is prone to breakage and getting tangled. Finding a decent curly hair expert who also does dry cuts in NYC was a nightmare when I moved to the city. But this place? Game-changer. They even do amazing hair extensions, blonde specialist work, and hand-painting, and I can confirm that these are top-notch. Keep in mind that I have been seeing Martha for over five years now, so the growth and change I have seen in this business is wild. Their website and online booking system is super easy, and now they have this cute app with membership and loyalty points. Y'all, I love an app. I. love. an app. It makes me feel like a VIP when a membership program is legit and actually treats its members. From the moment I booked my first appointment (super easy btw), everything was smooth. Her assistant Anais (who is a stylist-in-training), manages the phones, and she makes booking seamless if you don't have time to go on their site. Their whole vibe is so chill but professional. The studio itself is boutique and has an elevated feel, without being stuffy. During your appointment, they actually educate you on your hair health and craft a custom treatment plan with products that are uniquely tailored to you and your needs. The team at Headchop and Lil Chop is legit. They're not just about trends or pushing the latest fad; they actually care about your hair health. No pushy sales, just honest advice and personalized hair care recommendations, with products that actually work for my curls. I have extremely curly coils, which I have left natural for decades. And because of an extremely busy schedule I hadn't had a cut or trim in far too long. Not only was Kamie thorough in her approach she gave me the best curly haircut and styling I think I've ever had. When I started to discover that I had wavy hair, I realized that I had to find a stylist who could guide me in how to care for my hair and who had experience shaping curly/wavy hair. I have a hard time justifying the prices at salons in the city, so if I was going to pay a premium, I wanted it to be worth the money. I found all of this and more with Sarah at Headchop. Sarah is the only person who has touched my hair in about a year, and somehow I am still blown away every appointment by what my hair can do in her hands. After my first haircut, I wanted to explore coloring but wasn't sure exactly what I wanted and Sarah's expertise was clear in our consultation. I have black/brown hair, and we discussed how light I could go without damaging my hair too much and what tone I wanted. I had been shaving up for a new cut so I said what the hell and asked for exactly what I wanted. I didn't know I'd walk away with one of the best salon experiences I could ask for. I'm sad to say this, especially since this place has such great reviews, but I had a really bad experience here. I came in with an asymmetrical bob and I wanted the top layers redone so that they frame my face instead of fall flat around it. I also mentioned that I'm low maintenance in terms of styling and like to go natural. My hair is type two curly so it looks different all the time. I also showed a picture from this site (the woman with the mask and the black curly hair and bangs) as a model. My hair can do that, it's been like that lots of times before. My stylist seemed to understand and started chopping. She also told me she'd condition my hair, not mentioning that that cost $35 which I found out at the end to my surprise. That is not cool. Please ask me before you charge me for something I did not ask for. She did ask me while cutting my hair if I'd like some of the back layered and I said sure, because my hair is heavy. I had no idea that she'd turn my hair into one of those cuts that has longer layers on top and tapers down around the back and sides (not a bob). I hate it. I was so upset and there was nothing I could do after a certain point so as she was trying to sell me that I need to come every three months, and offering products, I was kind of shell shocked. I felt upsold and unheard and now I have to grimace at my hair every time I look in the mirror, deal with a cut that needs much more maintenance and product than is my style or energy level, and wait for at least 6 months for it to grow out enough to look different, probably longer. I was looking not only for a haircut but for a salon that I could go to and trust that I'd be heard. I got the opposite. I found Headchop and booked with Dominika. One the DAY OF MY APPT, while I was on the train, I was called by the receptionist who let me know "the stylist was running so late that she had to cancel altogether and reschedule." I tried not to yell but I was already on my way after filling out all the forms and confirming and agreeing to not be late and giving my credit card, etc. the receptionist offered me 30% off of an already expensive haircut but obviously I would never want to go to a salon that cancels 30 mins before your appt. read more

I find this a bit funny as they require at least 48 hours in advance to cancel with them and will charge you 50% if you don't cancel in time. But what about my time when they cancel on me? Best hair cut experience ever! The shop is adorable! Made me feel very cozy and comfortable from the second I walked into this shop. fyi this is not your typical salon; its in the basement, has pretty lights, funky wallpaper/artwork and an awesome music selection...so it's way better! Now to the important stuff: Curly girls- ELMA IS A HAIR GODDESS! I walked in with a fluffy limp mop of heavy hair and walked out with a super fun, bouncy, curly lob! Elma was not only very kind but was very knowledgeable about hair cuts/styles (duh, she looks awesome) and she gave me plenty of advice and tips on how to hydrate my hair after some damage and what I loved the most- she didn't cut shorter than needed. I put my hair in her hands and she did a wonderful job! Cut just the right length (with the DRY CUT METHOD) And comforted me by stating that I didn't need to go shorter than I'd be comfortable with to get a stylish and healthy look. Then the receptionist/stylist continued to assist me with some more explanation on how to achieve the right curly look with product info and set the final look into place. I don't remember her name unfortunately but she was blonde and also very nice and knowledgable. Walked me step by step on how to recreate the curls at home. So thankful to her! I also loved how they don't push their products on you. They teach you and let you go into the world with all this wonderful advice (and great hair). The consultation, cut, wash, style and dry was $80 which is very competitive for NYC and I liked that I was told upfront over the phone when I was booking my appointment that the total could start at $60 but would not be more than $80. I used to look forward to going to this place for a dry cut. My last experience made me rethink. I have been a loyal customer for the past 3.5 years even if it required me to take 3 different trains to get there all the way from NJ. The last time I made a reservation for Saturday noon and unfortunately had multiple train delays. So decided to take an uber even if it meant I had to pay 1.5x regular fare and I even called the front desk to let them know that I'll be there by 12:15pm while my reservation was for 12pm. I ended up getting there by 12:12pm to find out that they have given out my spot for some walk-in person. Also the stylists in this place keep switching every few months to the extent that I never got a cut from the same person the second time. Overall very disappointing and it's unfortunate that they are willing to let go of long time customers who make reservations ahead of time and got delayed due to genuine reasons. read more

Idk what happened with this place because my first cut I got from them a few years ago was really great. Even when I cut my hair short it was really great. The past few cuts I've gotten? Yikes. I got one in April 2019 which was basically the classic 'layered' hair where they just chop one layer of your hair shorter with no transition. Terrible. I got another cut in June 2019 because I have a ton of weight in my thick hair that I wanted thinned out and I needed to fix my last haircut and get more shape. This lady, I don't remember her name, cut my hair dry but COMBED THROUGH IT with a fine tooth comb while it was dry to cut it. My first appt at HC the stylist told me you should never brush your curls except when soaking wet, so I was appalled by this cutting method. It was also extremely painful and I STILL need a ton of weight taken out of my hair after TWO haircuts here. They are reasonably priced but the quality of cut has become complete garbage. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money at Ouidad or Devachan. I just came back from getting my long hair "trimmed" by Erin and I came back with chin length hair. Now, I don't have a relationship with my hair that one would describe as "precious," and I admittedly shared that information with her because I hadn't gotten my hair cut in about a year, so I knew some length would have to be cut off. I was not expecting 6 inches to be gone, especially because she told me she was going to my collar bone. I've never had a haircut that left me in tears, but after spending 2.5 years growing my hair out so I could put it in a bun and having that erased in 20 minutes, I'm devastated. A major part of this is also the fact that they didn't wash and style my hair after the cut. I've been having my hair cut dry for almost a decade and have NEVER had this experience. Apparently I only asked for a "cut" when I booked (I didn't know I was supposed to ask for more, because the last time I came to Headchop I asked for a cut and received the wash and style as well). If Erin had cut some off and then washed and styled, she would understand that my curls shrink significantly when styled. So what seemed like shoulder length (which is STILL shorter than the collar bone) is now chin length. I've never been so unhappy. Not "oh she went off on her own and started her own firm across town". I could tell they knew exactly where she is and that they get calls like mine often. So after having been a client at this salon for 2.5 years, I'm kinda done. The space is adorable, there's a lovely pup, and the haircuts I've received here have ranged in quality from really good, to like medium. I've recommended the salon to plenty of friends, and was truly excited to have discovered it. I really wanted to like it and to keep coming back... Unfortunately (thanks Gothamist reviews for ruining all my nice things), this may be the least accommodating salon in terms of scheduling I have ever visited. On one occasion I got a color treatment there that didn't work out. I called and asked for a fix. They gave me a time slot, and I left my work in the middle of the day (I'm a freelancer so lucky I can) to try and change the teen grassy green mop I left Headchop with to something more subtle. I spent 20 minutes trapped underground on a G train, and when I arrived late for my fix, the woman at the front desk told me that I would have to come back being more than 15 minutes late. As a freelancer I also appreciate putting my foot down, but the fact that they make no exceptions DMV style is really a pain. I ended up having to say that "hells yes they're gonna see me bc i didn't just waste an hour++ on the train." The opposite is true the couple of times they cancelled my appointments (which you have to book a month in advance sometimes). When I asked for a reschedule, the next available appointment is a week to two weeks later). Be aware that if you commit yourself to a Headchop haircut, you won't be able to come back and maintain it for some time. This is a special problem if your hair is short. It has truly been a disappointment, I really wish they cared more about their clients. read more

I really wanted to love this place because of the dry cut method and the adorable space. Unfortunately, I will not be returning. I have very low maintenance hair usually, and have never had such a bad experience with a stylist. I asked for just a trim and to lighten up my layers--it is now much shorter than I asked for and the layers don't blend. When I told her that past stylists have always used razors to thin out my hair, she disregarded this and just kept cutting them shorter as if that would do anything to the bulk--now instead of light layers, I have a really short layer that gets frizzy and big, and is still heavy because she didn't know how to thin it out. She knew it was bad and at some point said do you want me to keep going? I ended up just saying no because I didn't want to end up with even shorter hair since apparently taking off length was the only thing she knew to do. I'm not someone who is usually very attached to my hair, but I am devastated at how long it will take for my hair to grow back. read more
