I've eaten here a couple of times. It's been good both times. Their bread is a "sweet" bread. It's not too sweet though and it's extremely fresh. Sandwiches are all made when you order in front of you. It's kind of tough to see the veggies (unlike Subway), but they do a good job telling you the options. That said, the veggies were also extremely fresh and tasty. I had the Italian sub. The meat was excellent. And, the sandwich was really well made. Everything was distributed perfectly. High marks for the staff. They also have one of those soda machines with a ton of flavors. I love those. Overall, if you have the time, I'd recommend it over the Subway that's in the same parking lot. Total cost was $10 for a full size (about 10 inch) sub and drink. read more

Came in here and beat a huge rush of people - but the short moment we had alone with the staff was great. They were engaged in us and conversation and gave great recommendations for our subs. We got it to go but everything was made neatly and wrapped tight and was still hot when we got back. The subs are much longer/bigger than I anticipated, way too full after I ate the whole thing. My favorite sub shop in Springfield...better than Subway, Jersey Mike's and Monty's. The staff is hilarious, the ambience is laid back and the sandwiches are all outstanding. I have been here more times than I can count and have never had a bad sandwich. Even when I have friends/family from out of state/town come visit I make sure to take them by to try it out; they rave about the bread and the uniqueness of Head West. I always pick up a Springfield Times magazine when I am in and one of the few places I don't mind chilling at and reading the magazine even after I am through eating. The hubs and I stopped in on our way to a show at ISU and were pretty disappointed. I ordered the veggie meatball sub but when I opened it there was a long, brown hair in the wrapper next to my sandwich. I took it up and showed the clerk, who apologized and made me another sandwich. He apologized again when he brought my sandwich out and gave me a free cookie, which I appreciated. I then bit into my sandwich and it was cold all except the first bites on the edge. After a 5 minute wait, another person came up to take my order. While waiting for my sandwich to be made, I attempted to make small talk with the cashier. I had the worst experience at the Jefferson store, it's been some years back. Granted it was very warm out that day, standing in line at or around lunch time. The people were standing out the door, the employee who was making the sandwich's YELLED at the people to close the door. I understand the a/c was on. But he could of asked nicely!!!!! While traveling southwest on Interstate 55, I was yelping for a place to grab a quick bite to eat. I quickly noticed several Head West Sub shops pop up on the Yelp app. Head West is a local Springfield chain that promotes their sweet bread subs. This location just off I-55 on Toronto Road (south of downtown Springfield) has an interior "decor" of brightly painted walls, punk art and rock 'n roll music. This eatery seemed to attract a younger aged clientele of high school teenagers and 20-something's. The menu offers soup (changing daily), salads and, you got it, submarine sandwiches. All sandwiches are served cold, unless requested otherwise. I like their "Pick 2" deal (choice of salad, sandwich and/or soup) for $6--similar to Panera but without the side. I ate the Chicken Salad Provolone sandwich. I wasn't super impressed, but the sweet bread was pretty tasty. The garden salad was basic with lettuce, tomato, green peppers and onion, but the chef salad with cheddar cheese and ham looked better. I'm not sure if I would stop here again, however, it is probably better than the Subway which shares the same parking lot. read more

HORRIBLE service. Came here based on Yelp reviews on a road trip. I ordered two simple subs and ended up walking out the door after nearly an hour with a sub that wasn't even what I ordered. Staff member Meg resorted to sassing me, rolling eyes, and telling me I was wrong over just kindly fixing multiple things they messed up on two simple sandwiches. I was refunded by a kinder staff member, but Meg was absolutely awful. I must admit the sweet bread was good, but today's ridiculous service wasn't worth the extreme wait or awful staff.
